Better than what they've produced in the last decade but still a far cry from their 80's work. The first 5 minutes were bland and kind of boring, the final 3 minutes however were more up to par.

Am I the only one who thinks the drums are way to loud in comparison to the rest of the band?

Yeh, for a multimillion dollar band, the mixing on this album sounds awful... I know im listening to a 128kb sample, but really, that means nothing for levels.

Haha yeah
I still can't get over how boring the song is to stay on topic
I used to enjoy listening to Metallica, but it seems they were only fresh when Kill 'em All came out.
and, now that I think of it, Dave Mustaine's vocals have worked far better for him while James' have gotten worse.
Agree with me on that one 'cause its true no?

I have to say its way better than expected.
Anyway they can do whatever they want, they are already famous and rich and that's good, that's every musician's dream. I sincerely appreciate they efforts for trying to reach older fans.

However this is way far for any die.hard 80's fan, but I don't care, I'm not 80's fan xD

I'd love to give my full opinion and I know exactly what I wanna write. But I know how MS works, if I do I'll just end up in a meaningless conversation with people who won't respect my opinion. I'll keep it short then: Metallica has never let me down.

Not even with St. Anger??

Hahahaha, I knew it!!!

I looked a bit down wxpecting that too LOL.
And Metallica has never let me down either.
We fanboys must stick together!

i dunno about this one, i thought it was ok...for another fucking band. this song doesnt sound like the old stuff and it doesn't sound like the new stuff. it doesn't even sound like a metallica song. Im not too impressed with it overall, yeah kirk is soloing again but that can't save the song. I don't think im gonna buy this album guys. (already got all the rest)

Better than Cyanide, but still a very mediocre song at best.
Totally disjointed, the song doesn't flow at all, made up of copy paste parts.
I thought they paid Rick Rubin to be producer What the hell did he do? He should have told them it is disjointed etc. That's the job of a producer.

Thrasher!
It' way better than anything they've released in 17 years. There's a bit of an epic feeling, which I like. I think they were trying to capture the "One" feeling. I had to listen to it a couple of times to really like it though.
Same way about Cyanide. It does have the greatest intro riff ever! da da da da, da da da da da, DA DA! Nice.

Meh. Its still not 'And Justice for All', but at least its not 'St.Anger'. : / I also don't really like James Hetfield's vocals anymore, I don't know why really.

Yeah, same here. The vocals were some of the things that really bugged me. He needs to get back to his former singing/half screaming style.

Btw, is it finally to change Metallica's style to either thrash or heavy? I'm getting kind of bugged by the nu-metal mark, because everything I have with Metallica that was released since St. Anger is labeled as Nu too

The first half sounds like some new age punk-rock-metal crap. The mid section riff( somewhere around 4.15) is quite good, not as any of the old albums but the highlight of the song( and i hate the way it develops) , the vocals don't sound like james at all - the worst part in my opinion, the drums are slow paced and truly sound like Punk-Rock, the outro solo has good section but some of them suck big time although the drums here are quite cool, not crap but still not good. It has nothing to do with thrash but still a development from St. Anger

Punk-rock? There is nothing punk-rock about it at all. It sounds like a bit of fade To Black mixed with One. And the vocals sound like typically James. At least the way James sounds on Metallica - Metallica, Load, Reload and Garage Inc.
But it doesn't have anything to do with thrash at all. Just sowpaced metal.

I know it doesn't sound like punk-rock but i didn't know the words to describe the drums from the first section, in my opinion it doesn't sound like anything form metallica I'm familiar with and they aren't very metalish , so in lack of words....p.s. the vocals are to clean for the old james

Sub-par at best. Should have been what they did in 1991. We've all grown beyond this parlay.......this is like declaring that ACDC is better than ever. It is ok. That's it. But surely you fickle metalstorm forum junkies already know this.

Hm, dunno, a part of me likes it because it's an improvement compared to St. Anger, but that's worth nearly nothing, and the other part is bored. Sounds like 3 sings chained into one...

Now I'm released...The mighty Metallica is back again. I think Death Magnetic will be the best album in 2008...Sure one good song doesn't mean that the whole album is good but I'm pretty much sure, that the remaining tracks are as good as this one or maybe better. Long live Metallica!

Sure one good song doesn't mean that the whole album is good

There are two songs one could have heard... and neither one of those is good. Mediocre, yes, good, no.
If any other band would have released those two songs you wouldn't have said they were good.

Here's the thing, many fans and critics alike call Metallica's Master Of Puppets the band's best work and they're probably right. Although, Metallica's follow-up albums were still good, you know, except St Anger, but some metalheads including you, would still compare each new album to the classic and bash it for not being similar to "master of puppets". That's absurd, variety is good, look at Megadeth's United Abominations which i'm planning to review, mediocre, yes, good, no (this what you should've said from first) yet they didn't trash it as they did to St Anger. But I can understand, why people become so agressive when it comes to Metallica, they just want perfection from this band. I've a question for you my friend Can Dave Mustaine or Tom Araya sing like James Hetfield? James is a chameleon, he always brings something new to the table (vocally speaking), something that neither Tom or Dave could do.

well i have to say they didnt dissapoint me with st. anger, it was a surprise, but not really a dissapointment, i do like that album, different, but still....
im not really a fan anymore, or at least not as much as i used to be, but still i dare to say that Metallica has never made a bad song, imo... before everyone start to call me names and start telling how wrong i am, thats just my own oppinion. so you dont have to agree with me and dont talk me out of it ok?
i would just wish that everyone stops making comparissons to the other albums theyve done and just listen to the music, instead of to the past

This song is a joke. I was laughing throughout the song. It just felt like Metal 101 which is quite a shock from this veteran band. I was actually looking forward to hearing the new album, but after listening to this first single - I don't think I will even waste my time. I need to cleanse my ears and listen to some good metal now - like Communic.
