It's too difficult a decision, but I eventually settled for Immortal. It all depends on mood for me; yesterday I may have voted Burzum or Darkthrone, tomorrow I may look back and think "Gee, I really shoulda clicked Emperor...". Immortal was definately one of the greatest black metal bands, good thing I never took their whole image too seriously

Burzum for me. I love the chilling atmosphere and the dark ambient tracks. Also, Varg's vocals are so pain ridden. Good lyrics too.

Burzum's recordings aren't TOO bad production-wise, at least not compaired to other BM bands but I see what you're saying. However if anyone can make any painful sounding vocals even in a well produced cd I think it would be Varg, he's unlike any other BM vocalist out there.

Gorgoroth don't deserve votes. They didn't add anything to the genre and aren't worth listening. IMO.

well, no matter if they added anything....they are one of the few bands that still do true black metal...
even with all those imprisonments and suicides they are still standing on their feet and do black metal

Which underground BM band doesn't do 'true' Black Metal anymore? A lot of them do. Some beter than Gorgoroth. But hey, each to his own, I don't want to start a fight.

I"m pretty sure black metal with keyboards isn't "true," regardless how good or bad it is.

But those shrieks are awesome, even if they were recorded in a proper studio and all they'd sound tortured soul-esque. And not all shoddy recordings sound painful.

Hard choice between Emperor and Immortal for me - Went with Emperor because imo Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is an absolutely perfect album.

I voted Satyricon , it's the only band I saw live , and they totally kicked ass!
Also their CD-performances are subliminal : very cool band, and the best from the list for me..

Anyway, it's good to see that the mighty Emperor are winning! All hail!

It simply doesn't get any better than these guys. As I said on the previous version of the thread, this is the way black metal should be done. It's beautiful, yet bone-chilling.

I'd have to go with Burzum. its athmosphere is unique.

I'm pretty torn on this one between Darkthrone, Mayhem and Satyricon. Mayhem are by far the most evil band on that list (sure, Varg was a criminal, but the shit Mayhem did, along with their aesthetic, was pure evil), and have made some awesome black metal.

Darkthrone's music is just as good (if not better), but I think they lack the infamy necessary to make them winners of the Norwegian Black Metal War.

Judging by the few listens I've had of Dark Medieval Times, Satyricon are going to be one of my favourite BM bands. I'll hopefully be picking the album up this weekend, though .

my point of view is that pure black metal shouldnt be what instruments they used to produce the music... its the music it self guys!!!
offcourse you have to sound heavy and within the parameter of the genre of the music... i'm not saying bringing a bango and starting yodiling about satan makes you a BM artist... I'm saying if you make music as pure as emperor then your pure BM

There are a lot of good bands to choose. Koldbrann and Ljå are two of the best bands in the Norwgian scene today IMO. Cold and übernekro black metal.

I vote for Burzum, is a band that has influenced to many...
but Emperor and Immortal are favorite.....:dcool:

Enslaved because they do what the hell they wanna do. I was blown away when Below The Lights was released, maybe they already started their prog trip earlier, but that record did it for me, a fantastic album from a fantastic band.
