Marilyn Manson

My favorite albums from him are probably the first two: "Portrait of an American Family" and "Antichrist Superstar". His debut album is quite different than what came later since Daisy Berkowitz, the original guitarist and co-founder of the band (they were originally called Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids) contributed a lot to the songwriting and thus there are some solos here and there and the album has a more "fun" feel to it compared to the later releases which are obviously more dark and serious.
I can think of a lot of reasons why I also like "Antichrist Superstar". The concept of the worm to angel metamorphosis is pretty interesting and it's a pretty heavy album with songs such as "Angel with the Scabbed Wings", "1996", and "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" but finishes out with the melancholic number "Man That You Fear". I also just liked the band era in general since Zim Zum was in the band, who is also a talented guitarist; I still miss Daisy but he was a worthy successor (don't get me wrong, I like John 5 too).
So I hope there are some of you out there who are fans. To me, there's a lot more behind the band and the man than just the shock value and makeup.

I think Marilyn Manson is a good artist . Yes , i wont argue he is weird but its what makes him special and intresting, there is no way that Marilyn Manson is a woman or wants to be a woman , its just some crap what they tell about him. Anyway there are 4 songs of Marilyn Manson that i would love to listen anytime anywhere : Sweet Dreams , This is the new shit , Irresposible Hate Antheme and ofcourse Personal Jesus.

I saw a guy at the faculty the other day who looked like Manson's younger brother, only without the teeth and the eye, but very similar. Manson's just a show-off IMO, some good songs, but all that atmosphere around him is a bit... stupid, artificial... Dunno, weird anyway.

For me.. is a very VERY overrated band. The only song that I have to admit that it's brilliant is "Beautiful people" The other ones.... what is so good of this music that makes the people crazy?!

i just like less than 10songs from this band. and all of them is for the time which Twiggy Ramirez was the member of the band. this is the fact, if you like them or not old band (including John5, Twiggy and Antichrist Superstar's line up) was a very great band... but Brian Warner individually sucks....

actually, Manson is more black metal in his ideology than many more black metalheads. I don't have a problem with him and his music, although I don't have many albums, the last one was a very good rock-something and I like it...

I love Marilyn Manson! I have all of his albums and I got to see him & Slayer live. Some of his stuff insnt metal but most of it is, so dont you dare claim otherwise. Put Manson on the site for Portrait of an American Family ,Antichrist Superstar, Holy Wood, and the Golden Age Of Grotesque. Mechanical Animals, Smells Like Children, and Eat Me Drink Me, each contain one or two metal songs but not enough to constitute them as metal.

Personaly I'm not much of a fan... but you got to give it to the guy, despite all his inadequacies he makes the most of what he's got. He's actualy a pretty decent songwriter, even if musicaly he is lacking. He has actualy made a tiny impact on society in his own way, which is more than can be said for most metal bands. I respect him for what he is, yeah sure he's over the top, but thats who he is. He gets to live in his own little twisted world and make millions off it without having to do anything he doesn't want to, and does everything that he does want to, irrespective of the consequences. for me that is something to be admired. would I waste my hard earned cash on CD of his. No Way.

I lurve lurve lurve Manson. Im not sure what really started my obcession with him. I think it was Antichrist Superstar. Typical i know, but something just changed within me when i watched the film clip. Mind you, that clip is definately nothing to spech. Hoever, there is something about him. I dont know what it is. He's damn sexy. And, i really enjoy his showmanship. Anyone who is that into their music, that they engulf their life in it, is for me:) I love anything exaggerated or over done. Plus, his vocals? The man can sing the house downa nd i know, ive seen him live. Fucking amazing.

Does anyone know why Marilyn Manson doesnt have a page on this site? I have asked one of the admins, and all they said was that they dont consider him metal, this doesnt make sense to me because I dont consider Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Danzig, or Serj Tankian metal but they are on the site.

Hmmm, you know I'd be lying if I said I've never found his songs catchy. I don't own a single one of his albums, but I can admit that he writes one mean pop tune. Nothing I would be willing to spend my money on, but like I said, mean pop tunes. And as a person I think he is hilarious. I like the way he plays with the media and messes with people. I don't think i would classify his music as "metal," but his attitude is in the right direction...sorta...lol

They fail to realise that he is a performer who is dedicated to his art, he doesnt just love to make music and work his career, he enjoys being that person all the time. As in, He is constantly in character, i guess, except for behind doors. And i think this is one of the things i admire most about him. he's so dedicated to his art, that he lives and breathes it. That to me, may be the perfect explination of a true performer.

His music's good and all, but what I love about Marylin Manson is that he's a straight up intelligent guy. The first time when I started gaining respect for him was probably 6 or 7 years ago when I saw Michael Moore's interview with him in Bowling for Columbine (i think that's what the movie's called). I looked up more information about him because I thought he was a nut-job, but here he was having a great, intellectual interview with a man I greatly respected. I felt pretty bad for him afterwords haha; this guy's probably the biggest scape goat in American music. They blamed him for the Columbine shootings, they blame him when stupid ass kids commit suicide, his band's been labeled as the sickest mainstream music group ever, religious conservatives probably hate him as much as Obama, parents everywhere hate him, he's the media's bitch, ect lol. The saddest part is that he's much smarter then anyone who attacks him. Definetly an awsome, respectable artist though.

From the interviews I have seen with him, he is very nondescript in person (with the exception of his attire obviously) and thoughtful. Unfortunately, he gets lumped together with video games as "corrupting" influence on the youth. Really he isn't doing anything different than Alice Cooper (who actually is a hardcore republican O_o) did back in his heyday; he just had to turn it up a notch to be able to still "shock" people.

Sorry guys and girls, but I don't like him or his "music" at all. Normally I don't post in threads that don't interest me but I'm totally fucked up 'cause MM will be closing Graspop Metal Meeting 2009! Can you believe that a non-metal showchicken (IMO) may headline one of the biggest metal festivals in Europe?!

MM: I wouldn't say a single word to them, I would listen to what they have to say and that's what no one did. MM: I definitely can see why they would pick me. Because I think it's easy to throw my face on the TV, because in the end, I'm a poster boy for fear. Because I represent what everyone is afraid of, because I say and do whatever I want. That was brilliant though i don't like his music. The fact that MM represents Metal here (in Iran) for many, whilst is not metal at all , is really annoying, you know......

30.03.2009 - 21:19 Written by Lucifer123 on 30.03.2009 at 17:00 How anyone can actually think Marilyn Manson is metal is fucking beyond me. The dude plays a little harscher pop music with distorted guitars. Not metal whatsofuckingever and will never be. His music has just about nothing in common with the metal style. A little distorted riffs thrown in the mix does not a metal band make. He still plays pop music to me (or perhaps some kind of semi-industrial shock rock). In fact he's even less metal than bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Bullet For My Vallentine, Linkin Park and Atreyu.

30.03.2009 - 22:42 Written by Ragana on 30.03.2009 at 22:34 Atreyu is way over on the -core side of metalcore and very far away from metal, like Bullet For My Vallentine. The rest of them are really commercial mallcore (nu metal is a misnomer IMO as the genre isn't metal so I use the term "mallcore") and also very far from metal. as for Rob Zombie, I believe he did some metallish stuff in White Zombie but his solo stuff is far removed from metal IMO. Generally I'd say that most metalcore, pretty much all nu metal and a lot of the commercial industrial metal stuff (rammstein etc) is quite far from actually being metal and is rather a form of modern rock music.

When it comes to style, mansons did start out as an industrial band. They were signed to NIN's lable, and the did put out music with programming. The style in itself had put the band into th eindustrial scene. Rivettheads and goths were the 1st ones to pick up on this band as well. THey opened with an industrial following audience because that is where their sound took them. The guitar work would be indicative to an industrial band, the drum work would also be industrial too. A few industrial bands take metal stylilngs (Frontline Assembly, Ministry) and are still industrial. Generally it's called hardcore industrial. As they wrote more albums the sound took on a more "rock" based sound. It did bring the band to a wider audience while incorperating the theatrics of Alice Cooper and the "show renoun"/"I heard manson's going to commit suicide onstage tonight" of punk rocker G.G. Allin. A lot of their popularity was based around shock value, which has it's place in music. Iron maiden, came in on the 2nd wave of brittish metal. Guitar stylings and most of the subject matter follows the metal format. Initially Iron Maiden formed & wrote what they did in order to balance out the english punk scene with more metal. Iron Maiden's pick up came from metal audiences, they have influenced metal bands, their imagery is metal themed and they have prettymuch become who they are by time and respect in the metal scene.

Alice Cooper, WASP, GWAR, Rob Zombie - what do all these bands have in common? They play rock/metal music with a lot of additional 'distractions' thrown in. Its called shock rock and it is common for bands of this style to have elements of industrial, electronica, dance, jazz, swing, whatever. It simply adds bombast to the show and is part of the game in shock rock imo. And for this exact reason I wouldn't call Manson industrial. Sure, there are industrial elements here and there but MM is predominantly a shock rock band. Nothing wrong with shock rock, mind you, I just think its a distinction that a lot of people are not aware of. It is true; however, that Manson's initial audience was similar to that of the popular industrial metal bands at the time, which does at least mean that he can be seen as belonging to the scene, if not to the genre itself.
