As much as I love Perdition City, it is really not as good as you people make it out to be. Sure, for a band that started out as black metal, this sort of style-shifting is absolutely unprecedented and unattainable by most bands; however, compared to the sort of stuff that is happening in the actual dark-ambient/ambient/avent-electronica etc genres, Perdition City is merely a very good album. Bands like Mouse On Mars, Christian Fennesz etc have been making far superior electronic music for years.

I have a couple friends that are big into electronic music and have been feeding me some - mostly Peter Namlook stuff, but a slew of other artists as well. I've enjoyed a lot of it, disliked some of it. I think the reason I hold "Perdition City" in the esteem I do is a combination of the bands evolution, my appreciation of that evolution, and some of the various senitmental attachments of some of the various happenings in my life over hte past couple years that "PC" has served as the soundtrack for.

I will see if my amigos have any Mouse on Mars or Christian Fennesz... I have no doubts they will fantastic given your endorsement.

I really, really do love Ulver, they're one band that has managed to evolve without ever feeling like they've changed their sound to be more accessible.

That is RIGHT! That's how I see evolution of Ulver sounds. In all Ulver albums I can feel that. No matter if I am listening Nattens Madrigal or Blood Inside... Ulver' magic? For me - Yes.

I recently got into them, can anybody give me guidelines? I really like their black metal period but I'm open to their more recent evolutions...

Well, their first three are their most "classic" albums and their all acoustic folk album 'Kveldssanger' remains one of my most beloved albums of all time. If you would like to experiment anything works really. Try out 'Perdition City' and their latest 'Blood Inside.'

Why this band are here not extreme metal forum?

We all shood remebe rthay first 2 was BM, then acustic folk metal and leither thay just play avangarde and then tahy play non metal music
I realy love almoust ewery Ulver albums but of course closer to my heart are first 4

I can recommend You their last masterpiece "Blood Inside" with full responsibility...
Ulver has something amazing in their all LPs... I do not know exactly how to describe that... It is indescribable... You must get into... You will not regret it I promise... I did that and must say it was gorgeous feeling...

Well, I just got "Blood Inside", and I liked it a lot. I saw teh video for "It is not sound", and I can say some stuff about Ulver:
- The music is weird
- The video is weird
- They're weird.
But I loved it.

Ulver is a very different and acquired taste. Whether it be from their acoustic tinged Black Metal days or to their pure electronica, or to now with the mixture of both live and artificial instruments and sounds. I love everything that I have come into contact with. Just yesterday I listened to my copy of 'Bergtatt' and it really took me on an almost magical journey. The music is so ethereal that it's easy to lose your grip on reality while you listen to them. Amazing works.

Listened to Bergtatt the night before christmas, before I went to sleep. I was totally spaced out at the end of the album. Such a great atmopshere

I think 'Lyckanthropen Themes' is an excellent piece of minimalistic work. The music conveys a very haunting, bleak atmosphere with the use of very few isntruments and sounds, yet enough variation not to become boring. However, I wouldn't apply the title of Black Metal to the album at all. A great soundtrack indeed.

not sure there is much of a 'wolfen' theme in Bergtatt. It's based on an old folk tale about a girl taking a stroll through the woods, followed by night falling, a storm, and encounter with the 'denizens of hte forest.'

Sadly, I can no longer find the link with the synopsis of the tale that Garm and Co. put to music.


I'm also not sure about wolfen themes in Kveldssanger, either. I haven't seen any translations to the lyrics for that album.

Yeah... maby "wolfish" motives are not as clear as on Nattens Madrigal but when I say "wolfish" I also mean: dark, gloom, forest, magic atmosphere... (so to speak)

I've just recently been getting into Ulver and they are just amazing. I've only heard Nattens Madrigal, Svidd Neger and Kveldssanger so far, but all three albums have stunned me. "Nattens Madrigal" is a nice raw yet simultaneously melodic album which had me hooked from first listen. What I particularly loved about the album was the acoustic interludes and passages. After hearing Svidd Neger I really fell in love with Ulver. The subtle yet dark sound scapes had me in awe. And Kveldssanger, well, it's such a beautiful acoustic folk album and creates such hypnotising serene atmosphere.

Ulver's diversity is just incredible. I love how they manage to compose tranquil acoustic stuff to more aggressive black metal. They are certainly a band that I will be looking to hear more of in the near future.

If you like the movement from tranquil/acoustic to aggressive, "Bergtatt" comes with my highest possible recommendation. It has all the qualities you listed meshed into one 5 track, 34 minute album. I had extremely high expectations of this album based upon what I had read on it, and it absolutely crushed those lofty expectations. It is my favorite metal album, period, bar none.

Garm and Co seem to have a solid grasp on song and album composition, timing, and structure, so the entire "Bergtatt" album builds between styles but does so in such a manner that it doesn't seem to drag at any point.

Somehow it just flows fairly seamlessly, the lone exception is the all acoustic fourth track, which is a slightly odd departure from the general flow of the album - and never seems to drag or get tedious - a lesson Opeth (I cite them as they are probably at the forefront of bands who shift from peaceful to pounding in a song, let alone album) could take to heart.

Only their latest release 'Blood Inside' is the only album that could ever come close to being labeled Post Rock, and even that is far off. It depends on what you're looking for. They have beautiful folk tinged Black Metal in 'Bergtatt.' They have a pure acoustic folk album in 'Kveldssanger.' They have the truly epic, yet excruciating Black Metal album in 'Nattens Madrigal.' From there on they have plenty of fantastic works of Electronica from the very bleak 'Perdition City' to the minimalistic 'Svidd Neger' and 'Lycanthropen Themes' (both of which are movie scores) to the haunting atmospheres of 'Blood Inside.' Depends on what you're in the mood for.

I have heard "Nattens Madrigal" for BM and the later albums by Ulver.
I somehow have preferred the later Ulver than the BM one.
