Ok...I dont even know where to start...First of all...why isnt Michael Angelo Batio listed here? He is one of the fastest guitar shredders of all time and he is one of the best guitar players in the whole world!!! He received a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition...
also he is not ambidextrous, but he has taught himself to play two guitars at the same time (and he isnt listed here) either in synchronized or separate harmonies...He also invented and successfully played the very first 'quad' and double custom guitar...also, he invented the inverted hand guitar playing technique...

Dude, the over-the-top 'technique' was around for a long time before Michael Angelo. And all those stupid gimmicks of his do nothing to suggest he's the best metal guitarist, if such a thing exists. His playing is fast, but I've yet to hear him playing anything (that I consider) worthwhile.

It's Steve Vai for me - one of the most original and distinct of those players, has very evocative playing and never ceases to amaze me with his technique. He's got everything.

I choosed Yngwie because i think he put guitarplaying to a new level! All that neoclassical stuff is amazing, though, if Jason Becker had been listed there, i would choose him!

For me Petrucci is a way in front of every other guitar players...

Pepople like Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen are good guitar players but are total jerks especially Malmsteen...

Plus Imo Petrucci is the one that mixes the better way the technicality and the beauty in his play... He just giving you so much emotions when playing for example on the solo of 'Hollow Years' in the Live At Budokan Dvd I just shiver... No other guitar player gives me such impression (exept maybe Mickael Akerfeldt) ...

I voted John Petrucci, after choosing between him and Steve Vai for a while.

Both Vai and Petrucci are great in a lot of aspects, they're very fast, they master a lot of different techniques, they are great composers and they're definitely original. I guess what made me choose Petrucci in the end is his solo in the Dream Theater song 'Another day', where he combines speed and melody in an absolutely amazing ballad solo, I consider it to be one of the best that has ever been recorded, actually.

Though I don't think Petrucci is THE best guitarist ever, actually I wouldn't choose one, since I like a lot of different guitarists in different styles.
I consider this another 'Best out of these'-polls. Hope You'll forgive me for that.

the hell? petrucci is on the list, and not romeo. both are from gods of the prog metal genre. i mean Symphony X vs. Dream Theatre.

besides, petrucci is almost always hidden behind FX. remove the pedals, and what is he? nothing really. he may be fast, but if he uses FX to make all his notes sound better, what good is he really?

romeo, though he is a lil too random, can come up with some amazing stuff. he is awsome at shreding, and can come up with some awsome rhthms.

and someone was asking about Slash from Guns N roses up there...umm..Buckethead raped slash once he joined the band. i think buckethead is the reason why the band actually broke up. buckethead is far better than slash. slash just has the attitude that doesnt really back up his skills. sure, as a kid he may have spend over 12 hours a day just practicing the guitar...but those 12 hour a day practices dont really show anything in his music. and not to be cocky or anything, but i have been playing the guitar for almost a year now, and i have tabbed tons of his stuff on my own. that tells a lot about slash. i mean, i'm a freaken noob, and for me to tab that shit, its almost like...well slash isnt a noob, but yeah

so after going at it between steve vai, and yngwie malmsteen, i decided to go with yngwie. not that this is a good thing, coz he is one of the main reasons why metal died out from the mainstream stuff in the late 80's, and why stupid bands like pearljam and nirvana came in, but yeah...if he is powerful enough to do that, he is powerful enough to do anything. sure he may be one of the cockiest guitarists around, but hey, it works. oh, and he is the 3rd fastest guitarist when it comes to shreding...so yeah. second being angelo batio, and the 1st..forgot his name. but whatever...

occultus...I see you havent corrected the poll yet...nevermind...I think it's a rather considerable list of shredders but you cant go on saying that someone is better than the other because there's no real way to judge which dude is better...Your no.1 is gonna be your favorite...There are millions of shredders out there who probiblay may be better than whos on the list, but style also makes up a part of it...there are jazz shredders, metal shredders, fuck, even country shredders...You have to understand that shredding and virtuosity didn't begin with Petrucci or Tolkki...they're fine, but they're not special or unique...wtf? do you really think Petrucci can be considerated the best metal guitarist ever? Hell no!!! I cant even believe he is listed here...What about Michael Angelo Batio, Michael Romeo, Chris Impellitteri, Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore!!!?...Hey man...fix the poll please...

Oh man I totally agree with you

@ Soliloquy...wow, one of the most intelligent posts I've ever seen here...I think the same way as you...Petrucci? what is he doing in this list? I thought the poll was about the best metal guitarist ever...I really dont understand...there are millions of guitarists out there who are way too much better than him...he is just average, nothing unique that stands out from the rest...Petrucci sucks ass...some people cant accept he is just another guitarist pretending to be a rock star...his fans are obviously too scared to criticize him...
Same as Slash...wtf? he is just an image...he does like one bending and he is considered a virtuoso...fuck that...I totally agree with you, 12 hour a day practices dont really show anything in his music...I mean, not to be cocky but his solos are extremely easy...some may say he is an expert but his lack of technique speaks for itself...I mean, Slash? the best metal guitarist ever? wtf? I would like to see him play something by Rusty Cooley or I dont know...Hmm...I would like to make a poll with a considerable list of guitarists, cause this one is just wrong...

Petrucci sucks ass...So as Slash

Upload a tab so we can see how accurately you transcribed Slash's playing. Upload an mp3 so we can hear your play what Slash does - and if you can play it, let's see you do it with the same finesse as Slash. Upload an original composition - not only can Slash play such awesome material as his own, but he wrote it, which is the most important thing, and makes him such a legendary guitarist. Put your money where your arrogant, egotistical mouth is. Slash may not have the technique of many other metal/shred guitarists, but his playing is EASILY just as 'good'.

Out of the 6 I voted Vai, I just prefer his style. Oh yeah, he plays Ibanez JEMs too...

But in all acutality, and with much deliberation I think the title should go to Zakk Wylde. He didn't just stay under Ozzy's shadow, he went out and formed Black Label Society which is still going strong, even with these recent line-up changes. But not only is he one of the fastest guitarists [listen to Speedball, and solo in SDMF], but he's so fluent in seemingly every style of guitar and music. He also seems to just keep getting better, and doing so in his 40s. And then, like Malmsteen, made a name for himself as a GUITARIST, but with 1/8th of the ego! Awesome!

I don't know about METAL guitarist in general ( too many), but when it comes to the best guitar player of all time that would have to go to Stevie Ray Vaughan.....no dought (Even though Jimi Hendrix Is AMAZING, I think Stevie is better.)

And the best bassist would of course go to Jaco Pastorius ( utterly amazing in every aspect)

sorry...kinda got off the subject.....

While I agree that Marty Friedman and Kiko Loureiro kick ass, I'd have to contest your statement that "technique is everything". Sure, technqiue plays a really important role in choosing who you think is the best guitarist, but it is by no means everything. What's more important is how the guitarist applies the technique to their music.

Look, I know it ultimately comes down to personal preference, but don't rate a guitarist just because you like their band. I enjoy listening to Megadeth waaaaay more than listening to Steve Vai, but never for a second do I kid myself that Marty Friedman is better than Vai.

Let me do the breakdown of the group.

Yngwie Malmsteen:
He is a good guitarist, very famous, rightly so, and is allowed to have an ego because he's good enough to, but face it, just because he plays classical pieces at speed and can sweep like the devil doesn't mean he's untouchable. He doesn't have the variation of a Vai, and Vai can play at that speed and do everything he can plus more.

Marty Friedman:
He's got the most raw appeal IMO of all of those guitarists, and he is my personal favourite from that list. But again, if Vai wanted to, he could compose Marty's stuff and play it, and probably do it better too. My favourite, but not the best.

John Petrucci:
Everyone raves about Petrucci (I used to too), but mechanical precision and technical stuff can only get you so far. I find a lot of his material to be quite soulless and devoid of any real emotion, and again, I respect his ability, but he can't be a Vai, or even a Slash for that matter, because of that lack of feeling (ATTENTION: SOLILOQUY).

Timo Tolkki:
No comment. This guy's name shouldn't be taken in the same breath as the others in this list. He is good at what he does, but it's not the toughest stuff in the world, nor does it sound the best.

Paul Gilbert:
I haven't heard much of his stuff, but what I have heard has been amazing. He is a master of trickery (more so than Michael Angelo Batio), and if Vai wasn't here then I'd definitely rate him the highest, but Vai is here, and Paul Gilbert just comes up short.

Reasons for why Vai is the best:
He can do everything the others can (both as a composer and as a player). I'm sure all of those guys could play what Vai does too, but playing isn't everything, let's see them WRITE that. If you were to ask any of the other guys who they rate highest, they would say the same thing. I rest my case.

Well The three most confusing are :
-Yngwie Malmsteen
-Steve Vai
-John Petrucci

I find Yngwie as brutal and John Pertrucci as magic but theres something about Steve Vai... I don't know... whenever i see a vidoe for i just freeze in my place and sit to listen to his music. Moreover, i find him very imotional with the music, well all are but he's just different in my eyes... Hes the best, and thats why i voted for him. By the way i thught i'd see Michael Angelo Batio in between the names... i think hes a roadrunner with guitars.... Fastest guitar player i've ever seen...

I agree... but still I think Steve Vai is the best... most variation, most melody, most feeling... Yngwie just plays fast... Petrucci is so technical and so dry I cannot belive it... technicly he kills, but I personally find nothing interesting in his playing... I don't care how fast you can play if you do it like a machine with no heart and soul in it...
My only problem with Vai is that he IS NOT metal at all...

Well... you may have a point when you say hes not metal but well hes the best out of all! if you tell me whos the best pop singer and mention steve vai's name ill still say steve vai i think you get how much im extreme with him! I dont care if hes metal or not i dont classify when i watch him play i only see a proffesional who explodes his emotions as soon as his hand touches the guitar! I mean i cant see a person more emotionally-linked to music than him! (Taking for example For the love of god!) Damit! thats a show! You dont see Steve vai there you only see a bulk of emotions!

Still, I enjoy listining to Alexi Laiho's solos much more than those of Vai, Petrucci and Malmsteen (who is not better than Alexi btw in any way) first because they have great melodies and ideas in them and for me are generally more interesting (it's not all about he speed and the technic, dudes, its about the music in my book) and second, cuase I love the songs they are in!
