...and here it is

With much pontificating on whether to even start this one, (due to the anticipation of a major headache), I present to you the official thread of the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. I am just too damn interested in seeing what everyone (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens alike) thinks. I would like for all of us to approach this in an atypical matter. DO NOT discuss petty issues that are discussed every day by various media outlets. (Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Etc.) Such issues have been presented to us with intent to take our minds off of things that are actually important.

Feel free to grace us with your opinions of the Political Candidates, Political Debates, Important Issues such as solutions for Iraq, The role that the U.S. will play in the world, Etc. Try also not to look only 4 years into the future...that is what has gotten the U.S. into so much trouble in the past...

Go 'lite' on posting or quoting tons of links to other sights. Everything should come from yourself...and please keep the personal insults to a minimum...we all (hopefully) have the same goal to make the world a better place. Unfortunately that peace is currently being halted by greedy politicians. Remember to keep the big question in mind: What political figure would be the best for the entire Global community and why? Go at it fools!

Dude, after the last eight years, there is no way, period, that the american public will nominate another republican, I would think we learned better. I'm not saying all republicans are evil, but from my experience, they are in general middle aged, upper class, racist, religiously biased, white people. Everyone else who doesn't fit that criterea is probably either an independent (like myself, I hold no definite stance, I just want someone who will run my country right in office) or a liberal.

If we vote ANOTHER republican into office, I have lost all faith in my country.

Democrats:

Hilary is fighting her way up.....but honestly I don't think she will win.

first of all, half the people here fear her for many reasons that I'm not going to list. Second, she is a woman.
It might look like people are giving her support, but comes Election Day...just like the last election, people are going to jump ship. America is not ready for a female president; plus the republicans are screwing with the overall voting process which is going to diminish her votes even more.

Obama...well he has almost no political history. He spent 14 outside of the country and over all he's just a small farm boy trying to play in a political field. His main campaign features go around the whole "end the war" and "nationalized health care". Then he goes out and makes a war threat on Afghanistan? No thank You. Plus America is too broke for a nationalized health care system. He sounds like a 3rd grader running for class president with his campaign " and every Friday i will make the cafeteria lunch be PJ sandwiches and ice cream, and there will be Kool-Aid running from the water fountains instead of water" <--- Not going to happen. He's just there splitting the votes for the democrats. Plus, again, America is NOT ready for a minority to become a president.

Al Gore is not going to win, once you loose one election, your not going to win it ever again.....everyone else of the democratic party is pointless to talk about cause their support is just too weak

Republicans

Guliani is so far on top, he has the most money and support....I think he will win, not because the American public wants him, but because the democratic party is a mess and while hillary and obama are fighting it out, he will sneak in the back door. Most Americans that vote are surprisingly not that political. They don't know who they are voting for, they just know the name. And majority of America all they know is what a "good" job he did post 9/11. Plus so far, he's the most corrupt candidate on the list, so you KNOW he will find a way to climb on top.

Fred Thompson, well he's almost like the obama version of the Republican Party, people don't know much about him.

Personally I don't think it's a fight between the two parties anymore, I thinks it's just all a political ploy and the next president is already selected, the rest is just a show put on to make the American public think that they are still in control of their government.

That was a pretty good post, but what happened with Obama & Afghanistan? I haven't heard about that

Thanks

The obama thing is that he is going around saying how he wants to send in more troops into the whole mess to "get the job done" and also he wants to send troops into pakistan to fight the "war on terror", even without the permission of the local authoraties.... Now his campaign is trying to shove what he said under the carpet cause it really pissed the public off

@Arian Totalis: Thats more than likely to happen. The democrats are weak. All they need to do is find ONE good white male candidate who fits into the typical political mold and no one is afraid off, instead they pick a woman and a black guy, splitting the votes for their party, republicans just have one strong candidate, and they are better at covering their tracks

@Arian Totalis: dude let me tell you some thing, democrat or republican, they had always been middle aged, upper class, racist, religiously biased, white people. And other thing, lots dont like republicans, but let me remind you that the southern states, are almost 100 % republicans, and theres a lot of people who can vote there.

I take issue with the "southern states, are almost 100% republicans." It is true that almost every election, the Southern states are labeled as "red," because that is where all their electoral votes go. But it is important to keep in mind that the most red states voted only around 60% republican. That leaves huge segments of so called "red states" voting blue. America is far more diverse in its political distribution than most realize.

Clinton and like the last 4 or 5 Democratic Presidents have all been from the South. On one hand it makes one wonder if a Northern Democrat can be elected in this day and age, but on the other hand it is another example of how people of all walks of life and political beliefs are spread throughout the country.

Yeah guys Gore only ran in 2000, I don't anticipate he'll even jump in the race. Besides, we don't want him in office, he made vicious attacks against the metal community in the 1980's, good thing Dee Snider pwned him or our freedom of expression here in the US may be limited.
.....No, for any metalhead, Al Gore is a bad, bad, bad thing.

Actually that was his wife, Tipper, who went after metal with her PMRC.

So...Democratic party is the supposed oldest party? All right then....btw...the logos of both partys seem reasonably silly to me.....

Anyway....I've always been for the party which has indulged in a less number of wars and conflicts....Democrats then.....About Bush....well....for me he represents greed and violence and that I do dislike....since I think wars a re a crime all in all, I prefer Democrats....

PS...I've generally thought of myself as of am a-political person.....pigs are all of them....you just need to choose the one that's least bad among the other bad ones.....

Damn I hate politics....it turns people against each other just because of the success and power of few small groups.....

Yeah, I know that, But I am just so tired of being surounded by right wing extremists. Seriously, I am sick of it, so many people I used to look up to I have found out are racist and extremists with their religious view, and all of this correlates back to their political affiliation. I know not all of them are that way, when you break down the party for what it is, it shouldn't have anything to do with either of those things, but it's so commonly found now-a-days, it's like an unspoken code amongst them, you know?

Don't remember much from history classes but one party(democrats I guess) supported the idea that all states are more or less independent and the other(most obviously republicans) one supports the idea that all states are in the servitude of the president...Republicans are usually more aggressive as well.....Democrats are more peaceful and willing to maintain peace and welfare of people....equality and all that shite.....

I hate to say it, but you are slightly mistaken. Republican core beliefs center around empowering state rights while attempting to limit the central governments role in society. Generally these individuals are also socially conservative and think taxing is the work of the devil. Republican ideology also tends to favor large corporations because they believe that these corporations fuel America's success.

Democrats tend to be more socially liberal and believe firmly in a strong central government to guide the country. Democrats use to be even more left-wing then they are now, but President Clinton dragged the party more to the center during his 8 years in office (and yet we still love him...I guess).

"The States are in Servitude to the President?" I think you have some pretty bad misconceptions about America. The President serves the people, not the other way around. Yes I know the current one sucks ass, but the President is suppose to be our representative.

In the past twenty years, Republicans have been pretty aggressive (Regan, Bush, and Bush dickfuck the 2nd).
But Let us not forget that the democrats got us into Vietnam and dropped a couple nukes on Japan. Clinton also implemented the use of force in numerous situations as well. There is nothing you can say about one party that you can't say about the other.

...and yet Clinton still leads in the national and primary state polls. Even with all the buzz and money flowing into the Obama campaign, he just can't top Clinton. This makes me want to vomit in rage. Clinton will not help this country and business in Washington will remain stagnant like it has for god knows how long. Obama's message is so much more original and inspiring than Clinton's, and yet the American public is still leaning towards the shit eater. Maybe Opera will help kick Obama up a notch...

You see in The Bahamas, choosing a party to vote for is very easy [and we have the BEST rallies also ] . But sincerely, if I was American, I WOULD NOT VOTE! The choices you Americans have are SOOOOO SHITTY!!! I feel sorry for you.

I wouldn't vote Republican, bcuz ov the same reasons Arian Totalis expressed, well except like being upper class cuz my family are incredibly rich too.......

I wouldn't vote Democrat bcuz all they do is KISS ASS! I have noticed from observation that any party that tries to suck up to minority groups and promise them piles ov shit, is usually never worth voting for!! They remind me ov the P.L.P. here [they are the opposing party ov The Bahamas who i DIDN'T vote for!], P.L.P. just use lies to swing the 'grassroot' people.

So I was thinking about something today: most people are convinced that Clinton will win the party nomination and that Rudy will win his parties nomination. If this is the case, we will pretty much have the same candidate running under two different tickets. Hillary wants to draw down troops in Iraq but wants to stay there for like 8 more years. Rudy wants to stay the course in Iraq (and he would probably end up with a policy like Hillary's in the future). Either way its the same fucking thing. Both support gay marriage. Both support stem cell research. Both support gun control. Both support abortion. These are all the major wedge issues in American politics. Both even have questionable personal lives. And most certainly both are phony as all hell. Democracy is great when you only have one choice, and that choice happens to be a steaming pile of shit.

<--- Republican and will vote for whichever Republican ends up with the party's nomination.

What do I think will happen in this upcoming election?

I have no idea. There is no real clear cut favorite.

Dems:

Three entries -

Hillary - biggest lead in the polls, but is a very polarizing figure. she is horribly unpopular with about, oh, half the population. she has some experience, basically serving as President for eight years in the 90's and as a NY Senator. Waffles between the moveon crowd and seeming to understand defense. Recently proposed a couple colossally stupid ideas - Hillarycare -healthcare which will near bankrupt our country (see what the HC systems are doing to the economies in European countries like France and England, then realize our tax rate is far les) as well as some plan of giving a $5,000 bond to each newborn. More wasted money... the idea is nice, but there is already an income tax credit of $1,000 per year if you have a kid. Under the current, fiscally responsible, plan a child could have $18,000 (plus 17 years of interest compounded) at their 18th b-day for education.

She will steamroll through Dem primaries, IMO, but can she win it all?

Frankenkerry proved in 2004 that a person with less charisma than a bowl of unflavored oatmeal could not overcome a widely unpopular candidate. Hillary probably has as many detractors as President Bush did in '04, but none of the Republican candidates are nearly as charisma-deprived as John "I served in Vietnam" Kerry..

If we were to go to a casino and check the betting line on the US next President, she would probably be the favorite.

Barrack Obama - Looks good. Has charisma. Is a new face without some of the baggage of his competitors. Conversely, he is, well, a noob. Has made some glaring miscues in some arenas, particularly in talking about foreign policy (see the aforementioned Pakistan comments).

He will garner a lot of attention for both his charisma and his skin color. Oprah's support will help. Ultimately, however, his voting record is LEFT of Kucinich... which will not play well with most Americans, who are centrist.

John Edwards - Silky Pony. An also ran. Filthy rich man who talks about the inequities of "Two Americas" - the rich and poor, and has deluded himself into thinking he somehow represents the poor. Somehow I doubt the poor in America will honestly believe that someone who gets $1,500 haircuts truly understands their plight and represents them. He made his fortune in malpractice suits - and is in part a good reason why America's medical costs are as high as they are. Lawsuits cause an increase in malpractice insurance, whose cost the public ultimately bears.

Republicans...

Mitt Romney - Slick, talks well, good politician. somehow managed to win the Governorship of Massachusetts, a ridiculously liberal state as a conservative. That must count for something. Fiscally sound - MA was facing a deficit when he took over, and a surplus as he ran the state. He is a Mormon, which could hurt him in the polls.

Fred Thompson - actor, former Tennessee Senator. Very charismatic. His Reagan-esq values will sit well with Conservatives, and are centrist enough that, combined with his charisma, he should have no problem courting centrist voters. Should do well in the South if he kicks his campaign into gear. His prolonged "hold-out" from entering the race has hurt him, even though he did enter the race on the traditional day... and everyone else just threw their hats in the ring earlier.

Rudy Guiliani - America's Mayor. Did a hell of a lot to clean up NYC before 9-11, showing his leadership then... and his leadership after 9-11 was there for all the world to see. His biggest hurdle is he is more democrat/left leaning on a couple key conservative values, such as gun control. Should he make it out of the primary, he will be in great shape.

Biggest Republican issue is uniting the party. Everyone has different issues that take center stage for them. Less government spending is one, controlling the borders/illegal immigration another. There is no real clear cut 1-2-3 order for the actual GOP.

Ultimately, in the end, America is primarily centrist. The extremes on both sides make the most noise and get the most press, but most Americans are in the middle and vote accordingly.

When the Democrats took over the Legislative Branch in the 2006 elections, it is nowhere near the mandate that they claim it is. The seats that swung to their side were not won by the Codepink/Far left moonbats, but were won by Democrats that were far closer to the middle than the fringe left. Even in Connecticut, Lieberman who was good enough to be Gore's VP during the 2000 election was too centrist for the far-left, so he lost the democratic primary against far left Ned Lamont in Connecticut. He ran for Senate as an independent, maintaining his more centrist democratic views (liberal in many social areas, but strong on defense) and kicked the tar out of Lamont.

Even Pelosi didn't get her way when trying to name Murtha #2... the democrats opted to piss in her wheaties and vote another, more centrist Dem to the position.

The candidate that most resonates with the silent majority of Americans will win.

Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton are probably the two strongest candidates, and I think Rudy would win. Both are New Yorkers - so geography will not benefit either side... but there is not the seething Anti-Rudy movement that there is with Hillary.

I don't think Barrack Obama would have much of a chance against any of the other candidates in an actual open election. In the democratic primaries he benefits from the control the far-left has over the party right now, but that is more a liabilty than an asset to the rest of the populace. If American voters paid as much attention to actions as to speeches, he would not stand a chance against any of the three Republicans listed above. That is if they vote on the issues, experience, and ideas... and not image.

Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton are probably the two strongest candidates, and I think Rudy would win.

You fail to realize that most liberal voters think Hillary best represents their values, while most conservative voters don't think Rudy represents their values. This leaves liberals/democrats to rally around Hillary, while conservatives/republicans remain divided on Rudy. I think both are shit bags, but considering the facts: Hillary has a stronger hand to play. There is also strong anti-republican sentiment in America at the moment, which also plays into Hillary's favor.

Oh, and I like your comment about Pelosi. It is really indicative of her weak leadership, which you are correct to point out. She is utterly useless.

I do realize that, and stated as much in regards to Rudy... IF he makes it out of the primary, Conservatives will vote for him as the lesser of two evils.

There is a lot of animosity towards the current Republican administration, but Rudy benefits from not being a part of it. Both he and Mitt have a bit of "outsider" cred because they ran cities/states, rather than serving at the national level. And even Thompson is distanced from the Bush administration.

Bush's approval ratings suck, but are nowhere near as shockingly bad as Congress' approval rates - and both Obama and Hillary are a part of said Congress.

I just think that most people are not happy with either party...

There is a lot of talk that conservatives will be out in force to counter Hillary come election time, but many conservative/Christian groups have threatened to support a third party candidate instead of supporting Rudy. Like I stated before: liberals/democrats are much more united behind Hillary as opposed to the disunity of the support amongst conservatives for Rudy or any other republican candidate.
