Yeah Gorguts are strange but I wouldn't say that they're so alien that the songs don't sound like songs. I can understand people not liking the dissonance however.

somehow I am starting to get a 2001: A Space Odessey is not a film deja vu

Haha, I think he came perilously close. I think we should ask him whether or not Gorguts is music. If he says yes he should explain to us then why it's music but doesn't consist of songs

We are evidently not listening to the same album, I enjoyed this much more than From Wisdom To Hate.

I think it's safe for me to say this has actually become my favorite Gorguts release. I know it's probably not a popular opinion but I don't think their back catalog stands up to this album.

No no, it can't be, Troy. I'd thought the same way when I was going through the first track but eventually have to settled it down with "okay, good album, nothing else". If you're fan of Gorguts and think about this(your) decision, it might be. Personally, I don't think so.

It may not be better per se, but I've definitely listened to this more than I've listened to all of their previous albums combined in the past few months. Basically I look at those albums and think nah, I'd rather listen to Colored Sands.

May be. I'm not big fan of Gorguts, matter of fact, don't know much about this band as I haven't listen to their previous records much. I think you could be right.

I think you could be right.

Not about right and wrong here, although from a general standpoint I think most people would say Gorguts hit their peak with Obscura.

I wouldn't call Colored Sands better than Obscura. Just better than Wisdom.
I'm not gonna compare it to their first two, though, because those are kinda in different leagues and I enjoy those on a different level.

I actually know a lot of people who share this point of view, which I find very fascinating.

While I don't think it is better than From Wisdom to Hate or Obscura, it's a really nice comeback that has some excellent moments (particularly past the Battle of Chamdo). I just tend to think the first half of the album is lacking relative to what Gorguts were capable of doing.

To be honest, I feel the same way. Even though this as turned out to be my favorite Gorguts release, I was personally expecting more. Their sound has been modernized but I don't think it's been sterilized. It lacks the unpredictability of their back catalog but also sounds more consistent, which is what I like so much about it.

I'm with Lit on this. Better than FWtH and a welcomed comeback. Not as crazy and astonishing as Obscura but this ain't a problem as that album is really hard to match.

Finally got round to listening to it. Aside from being a tad too long at some points this is a hella good album. Great production; not as gritty as Obscura and songs have a surprising amount of flow to them. May 9 this in the future if subsequent visits please me as much.

It definitely is a great album. The production certainly stands out on it, and really makes it sound massive. I still think the opening track is the best

If I had to pick a favourite track I'd probably opt for Forgotten Arrows. I love the latter half of it; sounds heavy as sin. The classical instrumental track is a nice touch too.

I also have been listening to this a lot lately and I cannot see anything wrong with it, there were a couple of times where I even played this twice back to back. The first half is indeed better than the second one but this takes nothing from the greatness of this record.

Definitely Gorguts' second best album, though only slightly better than From Wisdom to Hate. In all honesty, I think Colored Sands does succeed in spearheading a more-or-less new direction for Gorguts, though it features some techniques used in the last two albums (especially Obscura). I think the first half eclipses the second half in terms of quality (though the second half is still very good stuff), especially with the beautiful violin-led instrumental "The Battle of Chamdo", showcasing the band's delicate approach to giving the listener a break from all the twisted proggy death metal. The best songs here in my opinion are the first two in fact, "Le Toit du Monde" and "An Ocean of Wisdom", as well as "The Battle of Chamdo". Everything else falls slightly short of the expectations caused by these three tunes, but the album is very consistent and keeps the listener intrigued until the end.

I had actually never listened to any of their music before seeing them live. Bought this and Pleiades Dust after the show, and I think I'm really liking this album. Not sure how to rate it yet, but this one started out pretty decent and is already growing on me the more I listen to it.
