The 70s brought us so many legends of hard rock, such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. Amongst those big names came Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, which, like those early hard rock bands, had a totally unique style, one that would would over time contribute to the formation of heavy metal. This debut certainly led to great things, both for the musicians that were involved and hard rock as a whole.

Best of Rainbow, best what Blackmore ever wrote, best of Dio to ... simply a 70's masterpiece, harmony, magic, weird inspiration, weird lyrics, muisc and feeling

Solid hard rock album riddled with some inconsistencies. Some tracks sound ahead of it's time while others sound like the track was cut in '69, six years before the record was made. Still, there's some can't miss songs on this album. "Self Portrait', "Catch the Rainbow" and "Temple of the King" really shows what this band was capable of.

I can like Galneryus, X Japan etc. without particularly liking this because it is possible to acknowledge the historical significance of a classic album without actually enjoying it.

I feel much the same way about Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys".

I don't like Keeper to , and whole Helloween concept band I so weak, but how many bands they inspired? Jap bands can inspire maybe Asians, but rainbow did whole....

I understand the historical and influential value of this album but I consider early Deep Purple albums far more important and better than this one (being that Richie Blackmore was on them). I like 3 songs on this album and to me they're not even that great, apart from "Catch The Rainbow". Let's look at the songs, the two covers are average at most. "If You Don't Like Rock 'N' Roll" or "Self Portrait" are really just 70's rock songs that are good but that's it. So I don't see why this immense glorification of this debut album.

This album is so diverse, from the slow beautiful ballad of "Catch The Rainbow", to the magnificent "Temple Of The King" to the brilliant Man On The Silver Mountain, to the great instrumental Yardbirds cover, "Still I'm Sad", and I still stand by what I say, Ritchie Blackmore is the greatest guitarist in heavy metal history

"Man on the Silve Mountain", "Catch the Rainbow", and "Temple of the King" are absolute musical masterpieces!
However, I find the rest of the album only average
In total, I guess my rating rounds up to an 8. I like that Rainbow got even more epic on Rising

If You Don't Like R'n'R is the weak song here, although it's still listenable. Everything else is top notch.
Catch the Rainbow is average? It's one of the most beautiful ballads ever created.

"If You Don't Like Rock And Roll" is the only song I find myself skipping, I thought the rest for me is highly enjoyable, and I agree that "Catch The Rainbow" is one of the best ballads ever, it's my second favourite song Dio has ever sung behind "Stargazer".

Did you read my comment correctly? I said that "Temple of the King", "Catch the Rainbow" and "Man on the Silver Mountain" are masterpieces. Saying that Catch the Rainbow is average is blasphemy, and I would never dare say that

Still think your assessment of the album is harsh.

I wouldn't call an 8 harsh at all But yeah, maybe it'll grow on me more.

I like when Dio does epic songs like Stargazer, Holy Diver, Gates of Babylon, or Heaven and Hell.
I like his emotional ballads like Catch The Rainbow, All the Fools Sailed Away, Lonely is The Word, or Children of the Sea.
I like his heavier songs like Sign of the Southern Cross, Shadow of the Wind, or Lock Up The Wolves.

I really find Dio was exceptionally special at doing the aforementioned epic ballads with his majestic voice - but I dont really like his sing-along "Rock 'n' Roll"-style songs like Stand Up and Shout or Do You Close Your Eyes. I find they sound pretty cheesy.

I guess I'm biased, but I prefer Judas Priest's "fun-oriented" songs. I find Rob's voice and the fast guitar playing of Glenn and KK create a more catchy style. Dio's voice was suited for more epic things in my opinion.

Great record, maybe even better than RIsing IMO. It's quite rare I listen to this one though, songs like Sixteenth Century Greensleeves, Catch the Rainbow and Still I'm Sad is so much better on Live in Munich 1977.
