I think because they aren't pure black metal most of the Staff members who don't necessarily follow black metal find them easier to digest.

I'd think between Rod, Joe, and Rozz we would have awarded one of the avant-garde/black metal albums with the win, or one of the BaN releases. Typically you'd usually get something more along the lines of Taake, Leviathan, Absu, or Nightbringer.

or some of us just preferred that album...

i like plenty of out there shit, but during the last couple months found myself listening to GB more and more over the other nominees.

While Glorior's latest effort has been burrowing its way to my heart I genuinely expected Celestial Lineage, Passion or 777 - The Desanctification to snatch the staff pick. I'm assuming it would have to be one of the albums already nominated, since nominees had already been short-listed through staff voting in the first place.

I voted most of them haha

Primordial's album is where it should be.

+1 for human remains, but surprised that a fairly generic (albeit kickass) thrash album managed to beat out Outer Isolation, which everybody except Troy seems to think is unique.

Woah, I guess you don't know anyone of the staff/elite then. Most of us don't think that album is really unique at all. For me it was a tie between Toxic Holocaust and Skeleton Witch... and a honorable mention to Sacred Ally... Everything else was on the "meh to good but not good enough" scale.

But there is nothing unique about Outer Isolation (even though I voted for it in the staff picks ) But it certainly was just very very very slightly better than the rest of the thrash nominees. Just showing what a weak year of thrash this actually was.

then you probably haven't listened Thrash seriously.

i may have promoted Havok vociferously 'cause that is one of the greatest thrash stuff released in 2011. as far as Vektor's Outer Isolation is concerned, another splendid stuff. And you saying one of the weak year for Thrash?. IMO it was one of the top 3 category which was highest discussed.

I find it funny that the only reason HAS TO BE he not knowing anything about 2011 instead of him simply not liking it. Remember it's just your opinion and his... Saying that the other didn't hear as much as the other is simply stupid. Although I do question everyone that says that Vektor is unique, ffs people don't even know about Voivod these days?

Let me see... I heard about 150+ thrash releases from 2011 and not a single one was great. There were some decent ones, like Vektor. And not a single one was unique either.
Maybe I am spoilt growing up when thrash started and when thrash boomed. But 2011 was not a good year for thrash in my books.

I like these results better than the public one too. Especially that Thy Catafalque earned the place.

Thrash in 2011 sucked. Plain and simple. The only reason it was possibly one of the more talked about genres is because it was one of the earliest recognizable metal genres, arguable the first real "extreme" form of music, and nowadays most of the conversations are about how mild and tame it is.

Thrash is a shadow of its former self. I'm honestly upset I wasn't alive during its golden years, because what we're getting is third-tier stuff.

Yep. Bands are good technically speaking, but we're so far of the raw talent and aggression of Thrash's halcyon days...

I can agree with that.

It actually pains me to see what thrash, even the revivalist stuff has turned into. Totally none of the excitement of the first original wave. No demo´s to get you fired up. All too slick, all immediately signed to bigger labels who immediately milk it.. No trading amongst collectors. Unlike in the revivalist DM boom and doom "boom". There is no sense of community amongst the thrash bands and fans like there was and like there is in the other two subgenres I mentioned. The distance between bands and fans is a lot further as well. Almost no mingling between the two (unlike the other two subgenres) I could go on for hours bemoaning the current state of thrash and its so-called revival. SO, if anyone has a couple of spare hours and wants to join me in the pub, we can discuss it whilst enjoying some good beers.

TH, Havok, Skeletonwitch all very very very mediocre releases Vektor was okayish but nothing great. Really I listened to about 150 thrash albums this year and the best one was just okayish, go figure.

now this is embarrassing. its not 15 years, i'm talking about 26 years back. sorry for that shit.

Really wanted to see Oranssi Pazuzu up for black metal, of all the black metal albums I heard last year, Kosmonument struck me as the all-around most interesting. I'm good with anything but Unto the Locust for thrash, because that album after The Blackening was pretty mediocre. Obscura should've won for death metal (though the debate betweeen whether Omnivium is prog or death could get a bit tricky I guess).
My two cents, anyways
But other than that, I more or less agree with the picks staffers

Couldn't disagree more about Havok. Definitely my favorite release above ALL records release last year.

Well, that post of mine was dumb really.

I just meant to say that i can't decide for myself which will be the best album in a specific genre without checking it out myself. Cause in the end personal tastes differ and it is all that matters.
