Nah, lyrics have nothing to do with the music genre, what so ever. There are lots of BM bands who sing about vampires and stuff (Darvulia). Shure, every genre has a general lyric theme, but this does not mean, that every BM band has to sing about hatred and death ...

I was under the impression that black metal should be about deviance, nature, etc. It just seems like CoF has too many gothic themes, even in their old stuff, to be considered black metal.

Yes, the music incorporates certain lyrical themes, but these do not define the genre. Nature themes aren't originally BM ones, they came in with Immortal, and with the heathen/pagan influences

trasylvanian hunger isnt BM? oook...:lol: my vote is for cradle... they have less cheese and they dont claim to be BM... so they get my vote

Hah I was just thinking of making a poll like this. Such a decision would be near impossible if not for the original "Stormblast". Come on, that album is awesome; Shaggy and co. had the symphonic black metal thing right back then, why did they have to go and make happy pop-black?

Well cof might be a total sell out band but some of the songs produced by them are pretty good IMO but i would prefer dimmu borgir solely because of the reason that dimmu was the band that got me into extreme metal\m/

Dimmu Borgir 4 sure! Though I love both bands Dimmu is more serious and traditional; is still making Black Metal.

Sellouts?
Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth are commercial, indeed, but not because they made or changed their music style to be commercial. They're popular because their music was good and people liked it, but they never had the intention to be commercial. If the case, they would have made pop since the very beginning.

Remember, even Emperor was on MTV, and they're not sellouts, are they?
For sellout bands, look for: HIM

Wow, this is a hard one. I like both of these bands but I don't know which one to choose. I really like Adrian Erlandsson alot he's one of my favorite drummers. Then again Nicholas Barker is also another one of my favorite drummers so I don't know which one to choose. I think I'll choose Dimmu Borgir because I seem to like their music more.

I chose Dimmu Borgir but it's a shame for both bands. I too see them both as sellouts. Sombody has gotta remake TRVE BLACK METAL. All this female vocal / atmospheric / pagan / symphonic / death / doom / folk / viking infuenced stuff is a bunch of shit!

thats not true...their first releases were black metal, try listening Total Fucking Darkness(a great demo by the way)

Cradle of Filth, amazing band with one of my favourite singers and they have done some of my favourite albums and songs!

I voted for Dimmu, because i like Dimmu and i hate Filth....

But i dont consider Dimmu to have sold out that bad... All they've really done is improve production (which is the only point i hate about early bm) and they made the songs more catchy and accessable... And although i dont consider them to be even close to the likes of Immortal, Emperor, and Mayhem... Dimmu are amongst my fav's of BM.
If any band should be included in this list it should be Satyricon (But still i dont consider their new stuff to be all that bad... Its alot catchyer)

I'd vote for Dimmu, despite making some of the most depressing black metal (their real works, not sellout ones), other can be enjoyable at times...

Cradle Of Filth is too comercial to ba VS Dimmu Borgir... I think that both bands are commercial, but COF are much more. Even my little brother knows them..-I don't listen to them so that he knows them from me- Anyway, I prefer Dimmu Borgir. They seem to me like being more....band. They're more tight. COF is Dani's band. He does whatever he wants. I think they should be a little bit more democratic..

Voted COF...somehow I like Dani Filth's voice...it's wierd in a kinda cool way I think

This took me a long time to decide because i like both bands equaly however i had to vote dimmu the reason being that i like all dimmus stuff ecpecially Death Cult but Im not fond of Spiritual Black, so thats evens it out... wheras COF i only like their stuff up to midian... the rest is well........ crap.

Dimmu.At least it was sometimes black in the true meaning of the word

well, for me it's not a hard choice.. despite the fact that dani is gay, i like much more his music.
