2008 U.S. Presidential Election

With much pontificating on whether to even start this one, (due to the anticipation of a major headache), I present to you the official thread of the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. I am just too damn interested in seeing what everyone (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens alike) thinks. I would like for all of us to approach this in an atypical matter. DO NOT discuss petty issues that are discussed every day by various media outlets. (Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Etc.) Such issues have been presented to us with intent to take our minds off of things that are actually important.
Feel free to grace us with your opinions of the Political Candidates, Political Debates, Important Issues such as solutions for Iraq, The role that the U.S. will play in the world, Etc. Try also not to look only 4 years into the future...that is what has gotten the U.S. into so much trouble in the past...
Go 'lite' on posting or quoting tons of links to other sights. Everything should come from yourself...and please keep the personal insults to a minimum...we all (hopefully) have the same goal to make the world a better place. Unfortunately that peace is currently being halted by greedy politicians. Remember to keep the big question in mind: What political figure would be the best for the entire Global community and why? Go at it fools!

Gun control was mentioned earlier, could you explain that and relate it to the candidates but with just basic terms for me?

Hmm that is kind of handy, but Winter, what exactly did you mean with "Both support gun control"?

Both Hillary and Rudy want to make it harder for certain people to get guns/ make gun ownership in certain areas nonexistent. The traditional Republican stance is to have very loose gun control laws. Gun sellers and gun manufactures are also affected by this. No politician in America is ever going to make it impossible for most people to get a gun, but they can make it a lot harder.

lol so I just heard on CNN that Stephen Colbert (you know...from the TV show) is running for president. He's running as a democrat and a republican. I can't tell if it's a joke or not, but it does seem real.

It's a joke. It has to be. He said he was running as a democrat and a republican so he can lose twice. He also said he wants his vice-president to be Vladimir Putin or Stephen Colbert. Personally I think he would do a better job than any of the other yokels who are running, but then again the last shit I took would do a better job as well.

I guess no one picked Colbert up LOL. Is anyone watching the Democratic debate? Hillary Clinton is so fucking annoying. Dennis Kucinich is kicking ass so far; I've always liked that happy midget.

I'm definitely excited to see Bush get the fuck out of the office. Sometimes I wonder exactly how so many people voted for him, although I live in Illinois, which had one of the highest percentages of democratic votes. Bush's selling point in the 2004 election was that he has "core fundamentals", while Kerry was apparently always wavering. Now, it seems like those fundamentals are more that he is an idiot and bullheaded. It took him about 6 years (in other words, until about two months ago) to admit that there is actually a such thing as global warming. The Iraq war was simply a vendetta that he wanted to finish for his dad, and to be honest, I am not sure what exactly we are trying to accomplish there if it isn't saving his face. Another thing that pisses me off about him is his fiscal policy...he cuts taxes for the richest 1 - 2%, while spending and the national deficit are at record levels. If he wasn't spending so much fucking money on the war, then maybe there would be a bit extra to cover all of that budget shortfall. His health care "solution" is setting up a tax-deferred health savings account, which a large percentage of people voluntarily forgo, due to its use it or lose it policy. And, he has done more for the dilution of the separation of church and state than anyone else in presidential history. Apologies for getting off topic...Barack Obama is probably my favorite amongst the primary presidential contenders. The ideas which he presents are often innovative and appear to be quite rational. But, his experience is an issue that I think sets him behind Hillary Clinton in the polls, which I used to shrug off, although his suggestion of invading Pakistan did demonstrate either inexperience or stupidity. As some idiot republican said, he wants to go to war with his allies and meet with his enemies, which is unfortunately an accurate statement. As for the other primary contenders, I can't stand them. Hillary Clinton is worse than a republican, John Edwards is a hypocrite, and the republicans are...republicans.

IMO, the US is just like e.g. the U.S.S.R. when it comes to political parties. The only difference is that there are two parties in the US, one is conservative (the Democrats), the other is a little more conservative (the Republicans) As far as I can tell, no alternative whatsoever, because there's absolutely no chance that anyone else would break through. But anyway, I kind of think that, from my point of view, Barack Obama would be a candidate I'd regard as a good one, at least in contrast to Mrs. Clinton anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bush would say that he personally believes that he has a moral right for the place of the president of the United States after all....

The Republican Debate is very annoying so far. They're talking about Jesus and guns so often that I feel like I'm in church. Oh, and I hate those people in the audience that clap every time one of the candidates, regardless of party, says some cliche shit like "bring the troops home" or "the American people won't stand for this, and I won't either". It's frustrating, and it's predictable.

Did anyone sit on their lazy ass for two hours to watch Super Duper Fat Fucking Tuesday like I did? Most of the bible belt states chose Mike Fuckabee, so now I have even more reason to hate that portion of the country. It looks like McCain is going to easily win, but Clinton and Obama are still neck and neck. I'm disappointed that Clinton got the Californian delegates, even though I saw it coming because Mexicans hate black people for some reason. It was cool to hear how big of a turn up it turned out to be. Some places even ran out of ballots because of how many people showed up.

I'm just ready to get primaries over with so I can narrow down who I have to choose from. I was unable to vote in the primaries in Missouri due to me being away from home. Out of gut instinct, I'm pulling for Ron Paul in the Republican nomination, even thought he's considered Libertarian. I'm looking for: Less Free Trade (Need jobs here in America) Finish up in Iraq Grant illegal Immigrants citizenship (Walls and deportation is too Soviet Union for my taste) Flat Tax Less drug regulation (Especially mary jane.) Alternative Power Environmental Regulations (Pro Environmental that is.) Private Social Security (People need some say so over the money they make.) No Death Penalty Gay Rights and Marriage Abortion Legal (If they're going to do it, let them do it. No partial birth abortion.) Welfare Programs that don't just support, but push people to support themselves. (Get them off on the right foot.) More federal funding for college. (Everyone needs to get a chance to go.) Objective Religious Studies (Sorry Ron, but no creationism, please. Not as a fundamental study at least.) I'm just formulating my beliefs, this is my first election, so don't be too harsh on me. All of these are subject to change seeing as how I am still quite ignorant on a lot of topics. However, it probably won't be Ron Paul, so I guess I'll have to deal with the cards that are given me.

07.02.2008 - 07:50 Written by Clintagräm on 07.02.2008 at 06:05 those are some strong convictions, my friend. i don't necessarily agree with your view on our borders, but the rest of them are parallel to what i believe. however, i don't think any presidential candidate would accomplish one of those things in an aspect of bettering this countries political status and it's citizens. okay, maybe ron paul, but come on...no independent will ever see the oval office. if anything, they'll fix something for the government's own benefit, or for the bigger businesses. anymore, no possible candidate has the "little people" in mind, IMO. our jobs were shipped overseas for a reason, our social security was fucked with for a reason, our rights are limited for a reason; which are all affecting the middle/lower classes in a negative manner. since i was only 16 the first time bush made office, i considered never voting. and after the last election, where he technically lost AGAIN, i officially decided not to vote anymore. in my opinion, my vote doesn't count. that's what the electoral college is for. and no matter how their sector votes, they ultimately don't have to take those numbers into consideration when they cast their official ballot. as for who i'd vote for (if i do), i'm not sure yet. i don't usually pay attention until after the primaries. but consider this: don't listen to what the candidates have to say. i'm sure i'd be able to stand at a podium and hand out a bunch of empty promises just as well as them. instead, look at each candidate's history. look at what bills they voted for/against, what groups they belong to or support, their political position on all the more important issues, etc.

i do realise that it's a little off topic and immature, but i can't help but wonder at what a strange name Barack Obama is... i think that the US must renounce the hardcore Christian beliefs they put forth in their laws, like abortion being legalised or grant homosexual rights, also the creationism teaching must be stopped NOW... generally i agree with C.J.W. also i have to express that the selling of guns is just TOO free in the U.S., i heard you don't even need a permit? surely the criminal problem would be partially solved if you had to have a license or something, here you need psychological examination, a shooting course, licenses and permits and God knows what else to get a measly pistol... not to mention they're expensive as fuck..

07.02.2008 - 09:56 Written by Valentin B on 07.02.2008 at 09:39 they're a little too lenient with gun possession, yeah. but they're putting steps in place to make it harder for someone to buy a gun. as far as carrying one in public, you need a license for that. people that have any felonies or violence-related charges (assault, battery, etc.) on their record aren't given that license. to carry a weapon in public you need either a concealed weapon permit, ACT 235, etc. all of those require a physical and psychological examination.

I have a feeling that Obama is gona win. I've been following it to some extent. I'm curious about it thats all, after all my ass is on the line too since Portugal is supporting the US in Iraq and has supposedly helped transporting prisoners to Guantanamo which is being investigated. If it is confirmed I think its unacceptable.

I'm not so sure on my stance on Flat Tax anymore. It seems like someone who loses $1000 dollars of their $10,000 of yearly salary will hurt a lot more than someone losing $10,000 of their $100,000. However, if you want equality... I guess you have to give up some shit, can't make everyone happy, that's for damn sure.

Can't believe Ralph Nader is coming in to spoil another election... why does this guy even run? How surprised would he be if he won and actually had to run the country? All Nader does is take votes away from the Democrats.

@K7: lol, K7. The first sentence I post is true. But the second one is a joke. I dont know much about content of things related to each candidate, what they promise to do, their attitudes about war/Iraq, so I just base on my tuition. But if Obama win, why dont we can say its a biggest glorious page in world history as a negroid person become president, that would make all racism demise. But as I mentioned above, their are more factors like his policy, politic attitude.. But K7, I thought all democracy candidates dont want to make war, or like you said, as not attacking other countries. I heard only hawk republican want to do that.
