Over the past 12 months I have been listening to quite a few German Black bands, many of whom I hadn't heard of before and I must say that I have been quite impressed both with the quality and diversity of sound in the German Black scene. Bands such as Coldworld, Agrypnie, The Ruins Of Beverast, Lantlôs, Todtgelichter, Imperium Dekadenz all have quality releases to their name.
I personally think that if you like Black metal, then you should be able to find a band that appeals to you. Whether you prefer the melodic leanings of Dark Fortress or the avantgarde(and brilliant) Todtgelichter or if you prefer your Black to be a bit proggy then Nocte Obducta may be worth a listen.

In this topic you can discuss the known, big bands or bring new, interesting acts to light

No problem mate! Although I learned that Fyrnask is considered to be half German half Norwegian band. Anyone have a clue why?

I'll have to thank you for this mate. A very good album. Love at first spin!

Where did it say that?
Everywhere I look it says Fyrnask is German.
Maybe the guy behind it is half German half Norwegian?

I was pretty damn sure Fyrnask is German band myself but half half songs on Bluostar album and his myspace http://www.myspace.com/fyrnask stating Tromsø, Norway as a location made me quite unsure.

Maybe he just moved there...

German musicians are great people in a lot of genres. Endstille blew my mind away some years ago but this thread really gave me some new names to check out so thanks! One band that I don't see though is Waffenträger Lucifers that I found quite brilliant (I'm not sure they're german though might be austrian or swiss).

Last week was the last concert of the remaining Lifelover members at the German Autumn Depression festival. And on all the forums in the internet everyone was like: "That Lifelover tribute thing was disappointing, but Fäulnis were amazing!" So I checked them out and thought I'd share it with you. Not dissimilar to Lifelover, Todtgelichter or Agrypnie. So far I like

Off the top of my head, I can mention 2 German BM bands that I would by the way place on two opposite ends of the quality spectrum.

On the left of the spectrum, among total shit that's not worth a dime is Nargaroth with their poseur pseudo music. Easily among the worst BM bands in existence. The band leader is a total joke as well.

On the right of the spectrum, surrounded by other brilliant bands is Nagelfar. One of the best BM bands that never became famous.

R - best: Lunar Aurora

WHY U NO LIKE NARGAROTH

Seriously, they aren't the greatest, I'll give you that. But there's a few albums (pretty much between '99 and '04 or so) that are worth at least a little merit.

I agree, Daniel's assessment of Nargaroth is way, way off. Not exactly masterminds but they're relatively listenable, even quite pleasant sometimes. Then again it's pretty hip to hate Nargaroth.

What the hell is pseudo-music anyway? This?

Don't think so. This is an example of pseudo-music:

^ I agree with them. Nargaroth has some good albums. Not really that bad.

I'm not really familiar with Nargaroth, to be honest. I found their last album to be crap, but I've had some amazing moments with an amazing person while "Herbst" was playing, so I'll definitely be looking into Jahreszeiten some time in the future.

My vote in this matter would be:

L - worst: Mystic Circle

R - best: Lunar Aurora

Mystc Circle isn't the best bm band from Germany, but Open The Gates Of Hell is listenable for sure. The problem with this band imo is that they don't go anywhere: black, death, gothic, dark? I don't know but it's a mix of styles that doesn't appeal to me that much. The Great Beast and Damien were also ok but I didn't listen to the last album, so I don't know how they sound these days.

L - worst: I think Immortal Remains is Germany's worst bm band (in my collection) I don't even know how that album ended in my house.

R - best: I can't choose but I second Lunar Aurora. Endstille is one of my favs right now, but I don't know their first offerings. Dark Fortress has never made a bad album. Nyktalgia maybe, but they aren't around for so long. Pffft, difficult.

The ones I named in a previous post do count too, but...I agree Moonblood is overrated.

Everyone is telling me that Nargaroth isn't so bad. Well, to each his own. I'm probably biased by what a big poser that Nargaroth guy is and it affects my taste.

But why on earth no one agrees with me about how great Nagelfar is???

Because everyone knows how great Nagelfar is. Kinda goes without saying ;] Their first album is truly underrated, even amongst Nagelfar fans who tend to prefer 'Srontgorrth'

Question that pops in my mind is - yes, today we all know how awesome and great Nagelfar are/were - why on earth they were so underrated??

a) is it because of their name, so the shadow of world famous Naglfar was too strong (although musically no similarity at all)

b) they were way way ahead of their time

c) you tell me

Perhaps it was because their tenure ended 10 years ago or so, which was probably just before or around the time the internet starting getting big. In the UK broadband didn't become mainstream until 2000 so they didn't have the benefit of internet related discussion and promotion. They resigned to a "cult classic" kind of status. I imagine a lot of people discover them through The Ruins of Beverast who are more current, they both have equal amounts of listeners on Last.fm

I believe that German black metal scene in mid and late 90ies was underrated as such, bands from Scandinavia region were on the full rise .... only two bands I remember that were heavily pushed by the labels and promotors were Agathodaimon and Mystic Circle, both had more goth tendencies. Specially MC left such a bad taste in my ears that I neglected the German scene for a long long time ... much later I realized it was a tremendous mistake to do!

Another interesting point regarding Nagelfar:

"The band themselves did not appear to consider Srontgorrth as an album; the band's official website labels Virus West as their second album." (from Wikipedia)

Nagelfar fans prefer Srontgorrth over Hünengrab? I always thought I'm the only one o.O

And speaking of underrated bands: I'm surprised Nocte Obducta have only so few fans. Even Agrypnie have more fans on this site and they are more or less just an off-shoot of Nocte.

So do I. Srontgorrth for me is top 10 of black metal albums of all time. Maybe closer to the 10th spot than to the 1st, but still.

Some less known bands that I thoroughly enjoyed aare Klabautamann, Odium Immortalis and especially Essenz, who mix black with death and some doom. Check out the opener from their debut. Fantastic, trance inducing stuff. Make sure you listen to the end, there's some weirdly magnificent female vocal performance there.

I think I wrote a review for this album, but I must've misplaced it. I'll try to dig it up.
