So i wanted to know whos your favourite out of these four massive 80s thrash metal bands based ONLY on their material from that decade. Helps if you would explain on your choice.

The albums (not inclueding EP's) that are inclued from this decade are:

Anthrax:
Fistful of Metal
Spreading The Disease
Among The Living
State of Euphoria

Megadeth:
Killing Is My Business
Peace Sells... But Who's Buying
So Far, So Good... So What

Metallica:
Kill 'Em All
Ride The Lightning
Master Of Puppets
...And Justice For All

Slayer:
Show No Mercy
Hell Awaits
Reign In Blood
South Of Heaven

My favourite out of the list would be Slayer. They are my favourite thrash metal band and all their albums that came out in the 80s are my favourite albums and get played on a regular basis. Jeff's and Kerry's guitar work is amazing with the riffs that the two come up with... plus "Reign In Blood" is one of my favourite metal albums created.

Poll

Your favourite American thrash metal on their material from the 80s

Metallica
272
Slayer
166
Megadeth
118
Anthrax
35

Total votes: 591

The fact that Metallica is in the lead is a joke. If there were any justice in the world, it would be Megadeth in the lead, there the only band who havnt released a series of terrible albums. Megadeth released 1 bad album. Anthrax havnt released a good album since they ousted Belladonna, Metallica havnt released anything worthwhile since Master Of Puppets, and Slayer havnt released anything but mediocrity since South Of Heaven.

Please point to bad albums by any of these bands during the 80's.

Even radiofriendlyhardrockica's "Black Album" didn't come out until 1991... so NONE of the abortions that any of the bands released after the turn of the decade count against them in this poll.

The poll CLEARLY lays out the artist's output for discussion and comparison.

And Megadeth only releasing "1 bad album" is highly debatable. As a HUGE fan of the band and "Peace Sells" and "Rust in Peace" back when "Countdown" was released, well, it was every bit the steaming disappointment that "the Black Album" was. Radio Friendly, weak ass crap compared to their earlier works.

Not that it matters, of course, for the purposes of this poll. Just needed to point that out.

From the 80s... Wow, that's like impossible. I think probably Metallica though. The first 4 albums are all just as good as the best on the list for any other band. Slayer and Megadeth are very close runners up though. Damn, I need to listen to some anthrax D:

I say Slayer was the best back in those days, better riffs, better lyrics, better gigs, what does it have to do a "trash band" like metallica trying to tour with Guns and Roses? nothing except that be a big fail, ha ha ha ha ha ha, I'm glad that motherfucker James got burned, I think in that accident his brain got burned as well.
Anthrax?????? who the fuck are they?
Megadeth had it going too, too much head bang, and long hair too, great moshes, a real good way to play and to express his anger with that guitar, dave is great!!!!!!

I would place them in an order like this:
1. Metallica
2. Slayer
3. Megadeth
4. Exodus

But it's kinda hard to compare Metallica and Slayer 'cause if you compare their music which is two different kinds of thrash metal (Metallica is a Bay Area band). Metallica is much more melodic than Slayer, but Slayer's album are also really good, even those before Reign in Blood (I would even say they are better). It's also a pity Testament isn't here. After all they had 3 albums in the 80's, actually really good albums... I would place Testament higher than Megadeth and Exodus.

Exodus isn't in the poll either, so why did you put them on spot nr. 4?

This poll is about the HISTORICALLY Big Four of Thrash, and Exodus wasn't a part of that, neither was Testament

It's difficult to compare this bands they looks different like comparing "hell awaits" and ride the lightning" or "reign in blood" and and "justice for all" differnt lyrics and singing technics Slayer are more agressive and metallica are more melodic I Copared Tose two band cause i know they was leaders of the 80's extreme metal but It's possible to compare Venom,Slayer,Sodom and Kreator
Megadeath And Anthrax are powerfull bands and others like exodus and testament

Ah Before I forget SLayer SLayer Slaaaaaaayeeeeeeeeer and Slaaaaaaayyyeeeeeeer!!!!!!

Looks to Slayer's fans or slayer army they are ready to kill and die by the sword and ready for the final command

The fact that Metallica is in the lead I don't know how but is a strange news

Yes, Anthrax certainly belong in the "Big Four" - they were huge in the 80's, and lost their way when thrash sort of waned out in the 90's.

They have sold more than 10,000,000 records.

And whereas SLayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, blah blah all spawn in California, Anthrax was from NY - and incorporated some other east coast music genres into their thrash.

They were big enough back in the day to appear in an episode of "Married with Children." Outside of Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer, do you think any other thrash band was remotely capable of pulling that off?

"Spreading the Disease" and "Among the Living" are freaking awesome albums. "State of Euphoria" is damned good, as is "Persistence of Time."

Everything that has happened since "P.O.T." is immaterial in regards to this poll.

The problem, once again (as it is all too often) when discussing musical impact of bands from the 80's is that the young folks on this site who didn't live it, and therefore did not directly observe impact, influence, and events as they happened, have zero clue in regards to context. You simply view musical history retroactively and adjust your view of that history to reflect your personal tastes as opposed to reality.

The way that I can take in consideration things back then is by giving awards for certain aspects of the music. Slayer earns for the riffs and agressiveness, Metallica earns for the melodies, Megadeth earns for the solos and Anthrax, well, they were a good offering of catchy Thrash Metal.
