Spent a few hours now on Darkest Dungeon. etc

Hahaha and I just opened this thread to post something about Darkest Dungeon... seems like it's quite unbalanced from what you say. As I am not interested at all in trying "early access" games, I'll patiently wait until they balance it up. I really have high hopes for it too.

In other news, Ultima Underworld 2's official sequel is getting a kickstarter as I write this... *cries*

I like it. I actually think the game is pretty breathtaking looking for the most part so I'm surprised at the backlash on that for one thing.

It baffles me how people complain about graphics sometimes. I haven't much interest in Fallout for the moment, but if I did buy it I wouldn't even care if it looked only slightly better than Fallout 3. Just my personal point of view I suppose. It's not so much that I don't care about graphics; I do. It has more to do with the fact that nearly every game released in the past 5 or so years looks amazing to my eyes (technically amazing, not always artistically obviously)

It feels like graphics gave reached a bit of a plateau to be honest. Looking at Fallout 4 I don't think it looks worse than Crysis 3 or Witcher 3, in fact I think it looks better because of a stronger art style. I guess some people feel the need to justify their multi-thousand dollar PCs, and if they feel like their PCs aren't being taxed to the fulllest with numerous little settings that are almost impossible to see during normal play then hissies ensue.

For me games are about the amount of fun I have, only. If I wanted graphics I'd go watch a movie. In most of them the graphics look almost real. Like... The actors, for instance.

another issue I have is the AI. Groups of enemies can be exploited by keeping a distance as a lot of the time they won't stray too far out of their areas, so you can pick them off from a ranged position. On the other hand enemies use of grenades is a bit bullshit. The ones that use them have infinite, and are deadly accurate with them, nailing you over structures and hills when they shouldn't be able to see you.

I also found 2 Fatmen fairly near the starter area too, which is a bit rubbish. You'd think they would be harder to get. Although I did get one off a guy wearing Power Armour who was using the Fatman himself. I blasted him with my one Mini-Nuke.

I've also encountered a few bugs, though nothing game breaking yet.

The perk system is kind of messy. For example, after you enlist for the BoS, the paladin will ask you to help the other two soldiers. The girl will ask you to retrieve tech from various locations. The first quest is easy, the second is harder as expected but at the end of the quest, to retrieve the tech you have to open a Master safe. How the heck do i get Master at computers when the perk for hacking only gets you to Advanced?

The grenades and the landmines are annoying from the moment the red signal appears on the screen till they explode is around 3 secs. But one gets used to it.

The fatmen and the armour i agree with you. Not mentioning the Alien Blaster (i found this one after 45 mins) You get them very easily which spoils the fun of finding. However since you can mod them, it gives the chance to upgrade at will, so it's kind of cool too to have of it at your disposal early in the game.

I enjoyed most of the missions so far. Not too long, with good stories and characters.

I loved that you can enrol at various factions at the same time and not gaining bad karma for it (for me the karma system made sense in NV, but not in F3). You can be in the BoS, Railroad and Minutemen at the same time and gather allies to fight the Institute.

The difficulty level were also changed. Even at very easy or easy levels you'll get challenged. I play at hard level, but at the beginning i tried all levels to check differences. And i must admit, this is no game for beginners, it's hard even at easy difficulty.

The house building is a waste of time. You can stash your stuff at several cleaned locations or buy a house at Diamond City. Or even make the Robots Fair (can't recall the exact name) your HQ (protection guaranteed)! Check this vid:

The perks for safe and computers go up to Master =P I just got Master at Hacking not half an hour ago, which was convenient as I only just found my first Master computer terminal. The perk set up seems pretty good to me. Maybe energy weapons could do with their own perks but it seems fairly balance so far.

Yeah, at this point grenades are really the only thing killing me too quickly (i.e. instantly). Now I've gotten some nice armour and upgraded it I'm finding it a lot easier (on Normal atm) and am at level 21 I think. I can actually survive more than 2 hits. I still get destroyed quite easily by Glowing Ones though, such bullet sponges.

I've to do any that have wowed me yet tbh, but then I haven't done all that many. Most of the missions felt very abrupt and didn't seem to have much payoff aside from caps and exp. Hopefully I've just missed the good ones.

I haven't done much faction work outside of the Minutemen (did up tot he bit where you fight the Queen Mirelurk: hard battle). Would like to join the BoC. I did a mission which involved finding BoC dog tags and it led me to a bunker with an old guy in. Nothing else seemed to happen though.

And yeah, I did that Robot Town one and have control of it ^^ one of the first missions I did actually, and I had to turn down the difficulty when I accidentally asked for a demonstration of a Mr. Gutsy who was waaaay above me in levels at the time.

Despite quite a few flaws: bugs, watered down dialogue tree, no weapon degradation or real weapon specialistion, dodgy AI, performance drops (especially when up on top of high buildings, FUCKING INFINITE ENEMY GRENADES, I'm still very much enjoying it, after 29 hours anyway.

My GotY is still Bloodborne though I think

That might be on purpose to get you to try other companions. Once you have Nick Valentine, your hacking problems go byebye

I have to say I enjoy the new weapon system a bit more than the old one. I'm practically still running around with my initial 10mm gun and it's still more than viable even against super mutants and legendaries. I did find a number of fatmans, regular rocket launchers, and three miniguns so far, not to mention four and a half power armors. But I'm still sporting my vault suit with mods and armor upgrades I find. It's a lot of fun to play this way and definitely something you couldn't do before.

If you do, however, you can start producing resources on your own. Have a number of scavenging stations spread across settlements with supply lines and you get some of the more rare ones even. Plus, you can basically grow infinite adhesive by cooking vegetable starch from resources you can grow yourself. That's a big helper if you mod a lot.

What's most annoying about mines is that they disappear when you reload. I quicksave a lot because of all the crashes and every now and then I try to reload to grab the mine and it's gone. It apears they can only explode once in time.

Would like clarification. What's with the game supplying you with power armour and a Fatman so early on? Is their better gear later on?

Power armour doesn't work the same way in this game. It's not armour you equip in your inventory; you literally step into it wherever you left it / it was found. You get enormous defence boosts, no fall damage however far you fall, maybe some radiation defence etc. The caveat with it now is that it requires Fusion Cores to power it. These are relative scarce. I've found maybe 35 or so in my current 40 hour playthrough. If you are wearing power armor and just walking about normally I reckon one would last you maybe 45 minutes or so, if you sprint though one will be depleted in a matter of minutes, and generally fighting in them no doubt runs them down quicker. They also require repairing / replacing too, which consumes resources found from junk. They're pretty cool, but probably not something that can be relied upon. They can be upgraded too.

As for Fatmen, I've probably found a good 6 or 7 through my playthrough, but I've probably seen fewer than 10 mini-nukes so again they can't be relied upon, and they weigh an absolute ton to carry so I doubt anyone would carry one around with them unless using it for something specific.

So would you say the power armour adjustment is better, worse or just different? Hard to gauge as a spectator.

I like it. It adds a new dimension to the game. I doubt I will use it too much, but it was fun exploring the Glowing Sea (basically a massive hazy green wasteland) wearing it. I think it might come in useful for certain one off battles, or if you're underpowered at a certain point, though I haven't really used it for combat much.

And yeah, I did that Robot Town one and have control of it ^^ one of the first missions I did actually, and I had to turn down the difficulty when I accidentally asked for a demonstration of a Mr. Gutsy who was waaaay above me in levels at the time.

It's easy to join the BoS. Just go to the zeppelin location, and they'll tell you where to go ^^ and prepare for a massive horde of feral ghouls
The robot town doesn't require any high level. Just a speech check with the robot director. Trick him into that you're the supervisor.

Yeah the perk system started to make more sense after a few plays. The stars are the levels (novice, master and so forth).

As for the missions, the BoS missions (Quartermastery and Cleansing the Commonwealth, 18 missions each!!) are a bit dull and if you have already cleared the locations by exploring they'll have you clear them again... :/

The crafting required in some missions like in the Minutemen and also a bit annoying.

Yeah I realised after about half a dozen of the BoS missions that they would repeat for a while, so I stopped. The real BoS stuff doesn't start until you get a little way through the main story and the BoS airship shows up.

Following the main story now and it's surprisingly engaging. Also now have an interesting companion (Nick Valentine) who's rapidly becoming my fave Fallout character of all time.

Worms may be indeed to old. Perhaps your current windows/OS doesn't support it.
If that's the case it's usual that it displays some kind of error, does it?
If it does, it would help better if you sowed us what it says
If it just doesn't run and doesn't display anything, then most likely the file is cirrupt, you may want to get other CD or download from somewhere else.

Bloodborne DLC. Bloody hard. 2 levels below the recommended level but I don't think that makes much of a difference. Feel like i'm playing Souls for the first time. Also there's some genius design near the beginning of the level that can either be a nearly impossible situation or a fairly easy one depending on how you approach it. Haven't reached a boss yet *gulp*

I watched a play through of it. Certainly does look hard. Also looked a little boring too; rehashed environments taken from the original game, generally kind of bland looking until the latter third etc.

Bosses will probably give you hassle going from what I saw. The first and last one looked cool (and hard).

BLOODBORNE DLC SPOILERS BELOW WOOP

FINITO. They knocked it outta the park for the most part. I think the most fascinating aspect of this DLC is how distributed the difficulty is. There is no unanimous decision on the hardest boss unlike Dark Souls where basically everyone goes with Ornsmough. I spent so long on Laurence I know how many hairs he has. Around 7-10 hours over the course of 3 days was spent on him to be somewhat precise.(His final legless form where he slam crawls towards you is the biggest load of steaming lump of bullshit i got so salty i wanted to cry.) I'm sure you'll find a comment saying someone beat him in 5 attempts. I didn't spend that long on Orphan of Kos but I know someone who's spent hours on him. DSP legit quit the game because he couldn't get passed Ludwig. That's the beauty of this expansion I think. It's more akin to AotA which is how it should be. Mobs are tough too. The giant shark guys with the harpoons are such a pain and fighting 2 of them at once is just pure evil. I'm sure some areas that I struggled with would be easier with a weapon that easily staggers like Ludwig's Blade but I digress. All 5 weapons that I tried were really cool. Maria's weapon has a cool spin to win attack. All 3 areas were fully realised I'd say. Will find a lot of sneaky item placements and ways to make enemy engagements easier. Their scrupulous efforts in enemy placement and synergy have not gone unnoticed. It's also really heavy on the lore (and quite fascinating I might add). Oh and the OST is magnifique! I love how the songs hype the fuck up when you reach the later forms of the bosses..it's like two songs in one. I hope they keep doing that. It gives a sense of tension, stress and in some cases urgency in these difficult fights. Shame on you for selling your PS4 (I think?). I don't know how to paragraph.

It's good they ramped up the difficulty. Bloodborne, in retrospect, was far too easy, especially regarding bosses. The only one time it was hard was when it was unfair.

I still think the general artstyle and feel was pretty drab though so I won't be rushing out to get another PS4 any time soon =P Maybe when the remastered Demon's Souls comes out I'll grab it and have a Soulsfest.

I might Youtube the boss OSTs now though.

It is by far the hardest content they've released and I don't think anyone will argue that.

Watching it I'm not sure it would knock Fume Knight of his perk, but I'm sure I'll find out one day.

Despite the songs being your typical orchestral, meaty, choir filled Souls music I found them quite memorable. I do wish they change it up from time to time. After all, Maiden Astraea's and Gwyn's theme are some of their best!

I don't think I could ever get sick of them tbh =P Laurence, The First Vicar's OST is particular good.
