...and here it is

With much pontificating on whether to even start this one, (due to the anticipation of a major headache), I present to you the official thread of the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. I am just too damn interested in seeing what everyone (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens alike) thinks. I would like for all of us to approach this in an atypical matter. DO NOT discuss petty issues that are discussed every day by various media outlets. (Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Etc.) Such issues have been presented to us with intent to take our minds off of things that are actually important.

Feel free to grace us with your opinions of the Political Candidates, Political Debates, Important Issues such as solutions for Iraq, The role that the U.S. will play in the world, Etc. Try also not to look only 4 years into the future...that is what has gotten the U.S. into so much trouble in the past...

Go 'lite' on posting or quoting tons of links to other sights. Everything should come from yourself...and please keep the personal insults to a minimum...we all (hopefully) have the same goal to make the world a better place. Unfortunately that peace is currently being halted by greedy politicians. Remember to keep the big question in mind: What political figure would be the best for the entire Global community and why? Go at it fools!

@Dane Train: Well personally, I think politics and religion should really be kept separate, otherwise the doctrines end up perversed!

I wholeheartedly agree with you there. For me, it is very hard to put my confidence and trust in most political officals. I do know so who are extremly clean and do amazing works, but they are ussually on the small community level. With the two major canidates for this terms USA presidential elections, I find very little about either one that would make me want to vote for them.

This is impossible; as long as you have religious people participating in politics the two will influence each other.

But what about the non-religious type? see that's where it's fvcked up! That's impossible for BAHAMAS, but for Canada, man scratch the religiousness............

Our election was last year and the opposite party to whom I voted for, during their rallies, they would ALWAYS try to use religion as a guilt trip! Gettin on the mic saying prayers and shit asking God to lead them to victory (it's no wonder we'll never make it to first world : ) ......But HAH!! As it turns out, the party I supported and voted for won!! Guess their prayers didn't work lol (not to be mean and conceited).

It is possible. In communist society like China, Belarus, Cuba and some african countries.

The republican candidat is better for my country cause of suport given by his party given in the name issue and in global politics. I hope he wil win.

In a short time the state will gain dollars, absolutely, but legal or not, drugs are the cause of many illegal actions. It is like in Holland, where prostitution was legalized to:
1. give prostitutes rights on the labor market.
2. bring it out of the criminal circuit
What happened here was that prostitution remained in the criminal circuit, as the pimps did not want to pay taxes, the prostitutes are sucked out right as much as before, but that the prostitution has become much harder to control.
With drugs it will happen the same way. Only will it be easier for dealers to make people start using "recreational" drugs like marijuahana, and the step from marijuhana to heroin isn't so big. Marijuhana is less addictive and less damaging, but still it is both. All those drug adictive people cost a lot to the state, first because they are more often sick, they cause more trouble to others, they are more often homeless, criminal and have psychologic diseases more often, and finaly they need more addiction care. To stop it completely is more needed than a ban, but legalization is not an option also. People must know what the risks of drugs are, it is not fun, and not camparable to videogames. Drugs harms the body and the mind, even marijuhana harms the mind.

Very good point about the criminal circuit still existing through legalization to avoid taxes, I never thought of that scenario.
The main point I was trying to make was the fact that if people don't have to go to a drug dealer and pay expensive prices, they will not be exposed to the harder drugs (like heroin.) They will also be able to avoid the criminal underground, it will just be similar to going to the six-pack store to pick up booze.
From a Conservative viewpoint I say: NOTHING that makes real money should ever be illegal. Why turn over the big bucks to organized crime?

I can personally tell you from experience that marijuana is about as addictive as alcohol, your body will not be physically addicted at all, there are no withdrawal symptoms, especially when compared to cigarettes (which I just quit after four grueling months of trying.) The jury is still out of the health risks of marijuana, it always seems to depend on who is funding the study: I even have read of two large-scale studies that show the THC in cannabis actually stops cancer from spreading. LINK1
LINK2
This idea that people must know what the risks of drugs are is a complete joke, the government will slap your wrist and tell you marijuana is a dangerous drug, and then turn around and try to sell you alcohol and tobacco, which are ALSO drugs. Just because they are legal doesn't change the fact that they are DRUGS, that chemically alter the natural harmony in the brain. The reasons that mariHuana is illegal stem back to the early days of racism, plastics vs. hemp corporate competition, and the hippies ruining everything for everyone else. If you say drugs aren't fun, I wonder if you have done them. I mean, why would SO many people break the law and go out of their way to do drugs if it was boring???
I completely understand your argument, and I apologize if I have come across as being rude or harsh, and I thank you for the good points that have been made in this debate.

man made beer God made cannabis in God we trust

"I think we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws," Mr. Obama told an audience during a debate at Northwestern University in 2004. "But I'm not somebody who believes in legalization of marijuana." http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jan/31/obama-decriminalize-pot/
Regardless of our little debate, I don't think the United States is mature enough yet for marijuana decriminalization. We are too busy straightening out other countries to worry about fixing our own...

I think it would be best if all people would use things like drugs and alcohol on a better way. Alcohol is much worse than marijuana and must be compared with harddrugs. I drink alcohol also, but I need to be very carefull how much I drink. Much alcohol is very unhealthy. Even a smaal amount of heroïn doesn't have to be bad. But a bigger amount is. But drugs can sometimes be medicine also, but it is for many people no fun because they are addicted. You will need to be carefull with it.

This is like the dirtiest campaigns ever, even though whoever wins won't really change much. So funny Derek Black (HAHA) joined republican party after everything Blacks had did, at the same time they bring Sarah Palin who don't remember what is she supposed to say or do so she said she loves gay even though she hates them. Lame.

hmm..reconsidering it it's not the impossibility of the statement that I don't appreciate, but rather its pointlessness, see saying that she is against gay marriage and full stop is acceptable to me,it's a clear opinion, but adding that she have gay friends, yes that is not necessarily uncoherent, but makes me think that she is seeking to gain 'even some' gay voters on her side, which diminishes her credibility, not just about her,but about every politician that is running a campaign and who is adjusting his principles to fit what some categories of voters would appreciate,it goes on Obama as well as on McCain.

LMAO I just found out that a few Republicans, including McCain and Fox News, said that Palin is good with foreign policy because Alaska is close to Russia.

I shit you not.

You have to be a moron to vote for McCain. If McCain is elected and dies, and that could be fucking today since he's 72 fucking years old, Palin being the President would be a complete disaster.

I also hate it how McCain, for the last two years at least, has been attacking Obama for being inexperienced, and hired a little bitch who has even less experience than Obama AFTER MEETING WITH HER ONE TIME. He just wants the Clinton votes, and it's so obvious it hurts.

Sometimes I don't understand 50% of the american people. I mean being a republican is one thing but voting for bush and now supporting mccain and sarah palin is another thing. Republican values meant less government and personal freedom. Since when did it become hijacked by the christian right?

How can 50% of americans vote for mccain who will give them more war, a weaker economy, no health care and less education for kids. And how can they like sarah palin who advocates teaching creationism, is against abortion in all cases including rape and incest, does not believe global warming is man made, banned books, lied about her achievements, thinks kids should have abstinence education instead of proper sex education (and look how good that worked on her daughter), and now said that war with russia is an option etc.

What nerve to appoint a woman as vp just to get clinton voters as if women were so dumb to vote for the exact opposite of clinton just because she's a woman, what audacity. It's amazing, the republicans have fought their campaigns for the last 20 years on the presumption that americans are stupid, and to my amazement it worked every time.
I mean, if the election was in europe mccain would have no chance alone but with this nutcase palin he would have 0 voters.

Since when are issues like healthcare for children, education, lower taxes less important than homosexuals and abortion? Yeah, the world economy is going down because of the american economy, the unemployment rate is the highest since ages in america, the war is a disaster, foreign relations are at a low, 48 million americans have no health care, american kids are being dumbed down by the education system but the important thing is that gays cannot marry, yay!
And the worst thing is, it affects the entire world when some christian fundamentalist war-rednecks take over america.

I am deeply disappointed in those americans that support mccain and palin.

If only the American people had a fraction of the sense I see in these posts! There are actually people (a surprising number of them in fact) that are afraid that Obama is muslim because of his middle name and won't vote for him because of that!

All I ever see on the news is more about Palin. I can't understand why people are so in love with her! No one seems to care that Palin is an idiot who says somethings and contradicts it in the same speech and had to be told what the Bush doctrine was by an interviewer. After eight years of almost complete incompetence from the white house, I can't begin to fathom that people would want another 4 years of this crap.

Maybe Americans have just become so focused on a person's image that that is all we care about anymore. The Republicans don't want this to be a serious election about the issues; they want it to be a shameless popularity contest and GUESS WHAT we are buying into it whole-heartedly. Looks like we are gonna get 4 years with Prom King McCain and Prom Queen Palin.

Frankly, I'm at the point now that if we elect McCain and Palin, I think we must deserve them.

I can't vote because I am only a legal resident of the US but I can tell that if McCain wins, this country is going to hell in a hand basket quicker than anything. It's not the fact that I generally disagree with Republicans and their policies, its the fact that McCain chose Palin. For those who think John McCain = Bush, you are wrong. Sarah Palin = Bush. If McCain (a man with a previous history of cancer and the oldest man to serve as president, if he is elected) croaks, we are going to go from a religious, warmongering nut job president to another. McCain doesn't even have to croak. Remember the key word is "incapacitated", if he gets cancer or suffers some major health decline in office, we are fucked.

Not necessarily. Assassination is always a final option. Suppose McCain goes senile and Palin tries to start World War III...

Fuck, I really Liked this article (don't mean to be on your nuts ) The reality of it though is yeah, McCain supporters just settle it at him being a patriot, and seeing as how most Republicans are wealthy people, well shit they aren't too worried because they won't be affected as hard as the lower class, In Fact, many companies will continue making profit if the war in Iraq continues, and also keep in mind my nation has deep roots in racism, and that's still going strong specially in the South, so Racism is still a huge factor In my opinion. " it's amazing, the republicans have fought their campaigns for the last 20 years on the presumption that americans are stupid, and to my amazement it worked every time" I completely agree, and what angers me the most is that my own people still cant see this, and are STILL being made a mockery of in front of the whole worlds eyes, A fucking Embarrassing Shame

I know dude, its frustrating to see that, thats how the government works though it thrives on the Stupidity or Ignorance of its people and unfortunately our fucking people are just too easily distracted with other shit (like watching E News or some shit like that instead of educating themselves, cause this shit is obviously not gonna be taught at any fucking school) and for their ignorance we're gonna have to suffer as well sucks, I actually left The US because of this very same issue. I just couldn't stand the ignorance, and just for the record I support neither but if I had to choose it would be Obama,

I couldn't have said it better, all we can do is wait and see what happens, cause you as well as I that nobody is going to listen to us. Fuck lets hope for the best cause we'll be fucked too if Americans choose The wrong candidate, this could lead into even bigger problems than we already have, just can't see why people still have that Headband over their eyes when its so obvious I feel so fucking helpless

The guy is probably is probably senile already saying that the fundamentals of the economy are sound and flip flopping everyday because he probably can't remember what he says.

But let me ask you this, when you speak to people who endorse mccain, do they have any idea what mccains policies would do to them? or are they just saying he's a real patriot and that settles it?

Several people I know who are supporting McCain have their reasons for doing so. While I may not personally agree with the policies, they nonetheless have pretty solid reasons for their decisions. Many people are for McCain on the basis that he has more experience than Obama does, which has been the biggest criticism of Obama from both major parties. Interestingly, most people I have talked to (even those supporting Obama) have no clue what Obama stands for, just what he stands against.

After making Obama's inexperience his main attacking point, McCain goes out and recruits someone just as inexperienced to be his running mate... it's crazy. I overheard my Mum's friends talking about how they are going to vote for McCain simply because of Palin, so maybe it was a smart move on the Republican's part, they definitely know how to win elections, something I cannot say about the Democrats. I agree that this race has created many "pundits" who support either candidate for shallow reasons, and have no idea what they stand for. I myself cannot wait until the election is over, the media has just driven me crazy with the stupidity of their reporting. It is no longer about the issues, I'm not sure if it ever was, and is simply a race-sex-age distraction party.

Just as experienced? No no no, much less experienced. Palin has only been the governor of Alaska for two years, and I don't necessarily consider her being part of the Wasilla City Council related to having presidential experience. Hell, she didn't even get her passport until last year!

But yeah you're right...totally crazy. I don't understand how someone could vote for McCain/Palin. :/

I suspect the young adult vote in the U.S. is the only thing that can stop the Republicans. If the 18 to 35 demographic goes to polls en masse, then Barack Obama will go to the White House.

So get out and vote! Tell all your friends to do the same. And make sure they don't vote for the wrinkly, old white guy.
