I'm suprised this hasn't been made yet...

Founded in 1988, Cryptopsy grew to become one of today's biggest leaders in today's technical death metal scene. Their singer, Lord Worm, is certainly one of the most notable aspects of the band, whose voice sounds almost strained, yet still powerful. Cryptopsy's music is very fast and aggressive, made stronger by their liberal use of time-changes and the intense drumming of Flo Mounier, who gives all of their songs a very prevalent percussive feel. This lineup released two albums, Blasphemy Made Flesh and their groundbreaking album None so Vile.

After 1996, Lord Worm left the band for his own ambitions as a teacher, and was replaced by Mike DiSalvo. His vocal style was very different from that of his predecessor, taking on a more -core style. His first album as singer was Whisper Supremacy. While many people were turned off by this dramatic change, DiSalvo was indeed a very aggressive vocalist. After the release of the band's fourth album, And then You'll Beg... DiSalvo quit in 2001 to pursue a family life.

After a brief stint with Martain Lacroix as vocals (who can be heard on the album None so Live), Lord Worm finally returned as lead singer on Cryptopsy's latest album, Once was Not. The band is now touring Europe to promote the album.

The first Cryptopsy album I heard was And then You'll Beg, and I loved it, so I suppose I like DiSalvo a bit more than some other Cryptopsy fans... of course, I now prefer Lord Worm.

Any other fans?

I encourage anyone to tell me about a death metal album released in the last years about which we can say: "fuck, there's a future for death metal after all".

Memento Mori by Withered from 2005, or The Chalice of Ages by Deathevokation released last year. And of course the pure out nihilist worship "Epitome of Darkness" by swedish Repugnant. Sounds ironic that an nihilist worship album should be the future for death metal, because it's the past, but i'd rather listen to (and I do actually) 20 year old death metal for the rest of my life, rather to listen to this fucking utter-shit which is cryptopsy.

Thanx, I will check that shit out... btw, it's not that I hadn't listened to good death metal from these last years, but I think that all the good stuff is just worship of stuff that had been made many years ago... death metal is still one of my favourite genres btw, along with black and extreme doom, and as you just said, the old years up to the early 90s is an endless source of outstanding shit.

Well, finally I heard the myspace song (Worship You Demons) and I don't think it's that utterly bad... although it seems to be the wrong song to judge the album, as I didn't heard any of those bad clean voices or jazzy keyboards that people whin about...

That's because Worship Your Demons is the first song on the album, so it pretty much has to be brutal. They put that song up there after realizing that those two other songs had leaked, and Flo desperately wanted to prove that they were still brutal. The singing doesn't start, if I remember correctly, until the fourth song, and it just seems like the singing just become more persistent throughout the album.

I like some metalcore and deathcore, and I think a combination of singing and growling can be a really good thing, but it didn't work out too well for Cryptopsy. xD

I like the band, they have an original sound. Their original sounds is really incomplete without Lord Worm however IMO. He is an absolutle freak of a throat, and I can't imagine any other vocals fitting that type of metal onslaught. Even though I didn't hate Disalvo, he didn't really come close to filling Worm's shoes. Sounds like this new guy is no different.

Spoken like the words of the Pope! I was luckily enough to see Cryptopsy in Hanau when they still had Lord Worm. He was the most insane vocalist! His eyes even roll in his head when he's doing the harder parts. It was just eerie greatness! I would have had Flo's drumstick too, but I was there with talking the whole time with this Indian dude and he got it! I wonder if I will ever see him again or maybe at the next show?! That would be crazy!

Aways, None So Vile was the greatest album ever released. There is no album that is comparable to that in its time. Though I'm a big black metal fan, I will never forget None So Vile and what it meant to me.

Flo is a God on the kit...

I read that and I don't believe Flo agrees with what he's talking about, haha. If they wanted to really do something dynamic, new and fresh, why not play the songs live? Oh, cause they're ashamed of it or giving it time to sink in? They played Worship Your Demons and then did old songs after that. I listened to Dinner Time and left the a comment. The funniest part is that you see all this hardcore kids on their page with "Every Time I Die" shirts, there wanna be cool lip piercings and a Star tattoo on their neck. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They all wrote shit like "oh, screw the old fans, what you did hear is genius!".

I told them it was a mistake and this new track is a bad idea. Whatever.

Problem?
Yea I heard about. I recentley went on their myspace page and heard the new song "It's Dinner Time" . It's basically as song mocking their fans just because they changed there style and fans not accepting it. I thought it was quite funny but at the same time it I thought it was very unprofessional and I would expect more then that from Flo and the rest of the members of the band.

I think that it says something that as the only original member of the current lineup, Flo thinks he can still use the name Cryptopsy, regardless of how much the sound changes. But to expect the same fans from the previous albums to enjoy whatever batch of warm piss he puts out, and then to make fun of them when they don't...I think that effectively reduces him from a legendary drummer who was part of death metal classics but put out one bad album, to an absolute piece of shit who has eliminated any chance of making a "comeback" album.

It's really not as terrible as everybody makes it out to be. There are some genuinely interesting parts to the album.

The jazzy keyboards and samples everybody talks about are very much hidden in the back of the mix, where, just like every other Cryptopsy album, has Flo's bass drum drowning out most of the sound.

As far as the breakdowns are concerned; they are indeed plentiful... yet they way they do it makes it sound more like a mid-tempo Cryptopsy album rather than a metalcore one. Also, Cryptopsy has long used breakdowns to break apart strings of blast beats; now they're doing more the other way 'round.

My biggest problem with the album is that they didn't go far enough on the experimentation. If you're gonna change things up, go fucking nuts on it while retaining the original sound. Instead, this album sounds like Cryptopsy is spinning its wheels and playing it too safe so that the band ends up sounding muddy and stale. I find that the album gets a bit better toward the end, where things get a bit more technical and sporadic.

And this Matt fellow is not a very good singer.

That's my two cents on it anyway. The Unspoken King isn't really anything special.

I know i am pretty late to post this but here are my views on a band that pretty much was one of my favorite bands
The new album : The Unspoken King was one of the most disappointing releases of the year cemented the fact that Cryptopsy has completely lost their heads and now in my opinion are nothing more than a joke. A band that belted out a album full of sheer Technicality ( None So Vile) had to sell out to the latest trends of "Death Core" and adding to that Flo 's stupid justifications of how the album is brutal and one of the best Cryptopsy releases makes me laugh everytime i read it and now this new dinner time track which a pathetic and naive attempt to take potshots against the people who had given them genuine, constructive criticism just confirms the fact in my mind that they nothing more than a joke now
