I'm voting no in this one. Do not give guns to the people, or at least maek sure that they can handle the gun, instead of being able to go into a store and buy a gun and then blow away the school.

According to finnish law, if some one for.e assaults you with a weapon ,you cannot return or defence yourself with a counter-assault of same level. This I have never exepted, and I think, in a situation this serious human, whether his dutch or american or finnish, works with his instincts, not according to law paragraphs. Therefore the counter-assault towards the assaulter may well be harmful and even lethal.
But to prevent these kind of terrible things, the complete banning of guns is no solution. We have to remember that before our hairy ancestors beat each other they beat some game first, so we need guns for hunting. And because human also has this desolate side of killing it's one species, guns are also needed to maintain armies. However, guns for personal use must be strictly limited and there has to be done a serious and thorough cheking of mental state and past for the person, who is aquiring one.
As you may know, The school-shooting incident of Jokela, has already led to serious restrictions in parallel-liscences for guns in Finland.

We need guns to protect ourselves from the governments who rule us. If we give them up, we surrender completely to the will of those in control. If some fools kill people for simply swimming in a lake, then those individuals need to go to prison for a very long time, but you simply cannot take away a person's right to defend themselves. Now, I know it sounds cliche coming from an American (we seem to be known as gun toting rednecks worldwide), but I sincerely believe that when you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have guns, and we law abiding citizens will be defenseless.

Just as you agree with Zarathustra, I agree with you. As Ted Nugent once said, "the bad guys already have the guns, let's even the field."

I'd say no, just because other countries seem to do fine without them. But more needs to be done to crackdown on the illegal weapons black market. Bowling For Columbine explained how America's need for guns all stems from fear. People who are scared buy guns, "Oh no the bad guys have guns we better get guns too." People living in Bumblef*k, USA where you'll be lucky to see someone get a speeding ticket. Most people who support guns and the NRA live in rural areas where there is limited gun crime, come to Philadelphia and you'll get a front-row seat to see what guns do. 1200 people in PA are killed by guns each year, and 87 CHILDREN were killed by guns in 2004. Due to circumstance, I would say people should be able to carry guns to defend themselves, but that is only because guns exist in the hands of outlaws. I think the government should try harder to figure out how criminals are buying guns illegally. Anyone know the stats of legal guns being used in crimes?

No, allowing people to carry weapons with themselves would be terrible mistake, as you see, not many countries allow such thing, I dont know one, to be honest. When you have a gun in your pocket, you will feel even more threatened than without it, you will see reasons to use it where they might not be.
