Are you SURE this is a 9?
Also, your marking scheme is crazy. "Enjoyability" probably shouldn't be a metric to begin with. What does it measure? How you enjoyed it, along with how well the music suited the production? As for "Musicianship", you'd be ranking bands simultaneously for performance and songwriting and assigning a single grade for it (although please correct me if I'm wrong). And "Innovation" is an OK metric, but when it's a 1/3 of your overall weighted rating, it might be too much. Your system already seems to bias bands with noticeable levels of innovation while bands with low innovation grades have to be far greater "Enjoyability" and "Musicianship" ratings to even get close to a 9. That's where I think you might differ from lots of people- bands with low innovation can still produce absolutely stunning (9+) records. Please feel free to justify your ranking approach- I just thought I'd tell you why I think users might have a problem with it. If I had to adopt your crazy marking scheme, the first two songs indicate that this is likely a 7-7-6 album for me.

What a totally well thought out answer...

Also, soo not seeing what makes this stand out to all the other DSBM bands out there.

Not sure why this does it for me. I normally can't stand Depressive BM. Such is life. This whole "qualify your opinion" stuff is counter to what music is about imo. And it goes back to what I said about being subjective: it's innovative to me in part because I don't listen to much DSBM. To someone who listens to it every day it might be a 1.

This whole "qualify your opinion" stuff is counter to what music is about imo.

You're free to think of albums in whatever way you wish. But if you're going to have meaningful discourse with other people (with a plurality of tastes and opinions) and if you're recommending music for people to check out, you have to qualify and substantiate your opinions. It doesn't go counter to what music is about at all. It's something practiced by everyone when they are recommending something, whether it's a book or a film or music. It's also practiced whenever you're defending a point of view.

And it goes back to what I said about being subjective: it's innovative to me in part because I don't listen to much DSBM.

That doesn't make it innovative. Innovation is precisely the judgment of whether something new is introduced within a specific domain (typically a genre). If you don't know the genre very well, it doesn't make any kind of sense to rank an album on innovation. Alternatively, if you know the genre well and don't like it very much in general, you would have to defend why Deadspace's approach is new and qualify what it brings to the table that is different and attractive. Innovation, like all other measures, is influenced by subjectivity, but it should only be employed by people who can actually evaluate it. If you don't know enough about something, don't put it in your review.

If this is innovative, then Shining have musical quality on par with Rush. And that's exactly what this album is: Cut-rate Shining.

If this is innovative, then Shining have musical quality on par with Rush. And that's exactly what this album is: Cut-rate Shining.

I really can't stand Shining though. Just a matter of preference. I'm totally open to hearing any other bands you consider to be in this style but doing it better.

I can't stand DSBM as a whole, though, so Shining is really the only one I'll offer, since it's one of the very few good bands in the genre (which this band is certainly not one of), 'cept maybe Austere's To Lay Like Old Ashes.
