Better than I remember. As the Lemon says it's much better after the first 3 tracks.

After Napalm Death's collaboration with Anneke Van Giersbergen on "Smear Campaign" I thought that they would never be able to surprise me anymore, but... They did just that by having John Zorn play on this album (even if he contributed only to one song). Besides there are plenty of clean vocal parts, which also sounds a bit unusual, but interesting.
All in all, I think that Utilitarian serves to prove that Napalm Death is still on the top of the grindcore scene.

Almost as good as TWFNS, it's definitely on par with the more recent releases, and some good experimentation as well.

This is awesome. Sure doesn't sound like pure grindcore to me...

There's been a lot of death mixed in their sound since for while, won't be able to tell you exactly at which album it started. But yeah, the latest is a good example of what I would call deathgrind.

I tried to start with their first album, but it's far too caustic for my tastes. I just can't do it. I think I'll just work my way backwards through their discography and stop when I throw up

Yeah I'm not into early ND either. I think it's just the first two that are really hard on the ear, I think you'll be fine until your reach the third full-length.

Their third album is basically a pure death metal album. Considering your posts here I actually think it's a good idea to go backwards. Who knows, maybe you will find the first two albums to be easier on the ears than expected after checking out everything else first. I personally LOVE the first 2 albums but I understand those who just can't take it.

If I can make a suggestion, The Code Is Red is IMO the best of ND post-2000, then Smear Campaign and Time Waits For No Slave. Also definitely try their newest one Apex Predator.
