Swedish Darkwater return three years after releasing their impressive debut album Calling The Earth To Witness and going through an important line-up change. With the departure of former bassist and songwriter Karl Wassholm who wrote some of the best songs in their previous album, guitarist Sigfridsson assumed more songwriting duties. While Båth and Holmberg had been previously very involved in the songwriting process, that had not been the case with Sigfridsson who penned some of the lyrics for this album. This is a new element.

Has anyone heard it yet?

EDIT: heard it once today and I'm a bit disappointed...
It's good, but they really need to differentiate themselves from the likes of DT, Riverside & co

Pretty boring stuff. Never heard the band before and was amped to hear some new prog metal (after the shockingly lame Seventh Wonder album coming up), but man this is even more boring.

Actually so far I think this album sounds a bit like early Evergrey, which is interesting for me in way.

I only know In search Of Truth, so I cannot compare, I guess, but I quite like the album now (upon third listen). It is quite keyboard driven, whether it's the progression or the riffs, but I always like keyboards, so it's all good, plus they pull it out in class. Though I still stick by my statement earlier that then need to do a bit more to differentiate themselves from DT.

I'm liking it so far as well, after 5 listens ahah I really like the keyboard work too, it doesn't surprise me, their first album also had a lot of keyboards involvement in the songs. Where do u see the DT connections? I think it's the Darkwater sound I heard in the first album, in develpoment.

I'm not the biggest Dream Theatre fan, so maybe I shouldn't really make the comparison in the first place. What I'm trying to say though is that Darkwater does not bring anything particularly new to the table. While I love the keyboards, the vocals, the heavy guitar riffs, the modern sound in general, it feels less fresh than, say, Haken.

I see where u are going. And it's fine by me

I, for one, think that the voice is very distinctive for instance, than anything else I've heard. I'm sure there are other bands that sound more fresh than they do, think Riverside as an example. I think they are really pushing the boundaries on what progressive metal can be and mean. But I also think that Darkwater bring something to the table. I do have a feeling that their sound is distinct although they take me to other places that I'm familiar with, mostly Evergrey actually.

It's a healthy discussion. I was just trying to understand why you connected them to Dream Theater because I don't make that connection at all. But I find it interesting to know other ppl's POV.

If that's the case I won't have high expectations (need to listen to it), the first one is just average IMO

I think this is a very good album. OK, so there's nothing really original, but it's a consistently good listen, all the way through. IMO it's an improvement on there first album.

Very catchy at some points, but after 4 spins I began to understand that there's not much depth here. Some solos are excellent, sometimes even verging on amazing, while others are plainly boring. I certainly did enjoy their first album a lot more.

Performance: 9
Songwriting: 8
Originality: 5
Production: 9

Overall: 7.3 , I expected more.

Kind of agree with DrM, however I just looked up the debut album and that seems a hundred times better. Where Stories End lacks inspiration, it feels it was "construced". Not a single melody I could recall the next day I listened to it.
