I don't think they're progressing for better or worse. They've always just been bad.
Spot on. Even though I hate the word "overrated", it begs to be used here. Venom is a single most overrated band in the history of metal. Their influence etc. aside, they've always been terrible musicians and composers.

Maybe some of their later songs in "resurrection" and afterwards have some thrash metal elements, but generally they cannot be considered a thrash metal band. Especially their early works are NWOBHM fused with Speed metal, and because of their lyrics, they are also considered "black metal" too. Of course now I can't call them NWOBHM, but they kept the speed metal elements and their music progressed to a more... how can I call it... "rocker" direction? Which is a natural progression to a band like Venom for me.
Also (correct me if I'm wrong) if I can judge from your profile you don't really listen to thrash metal, and I don't mean just Metallica and Slayer. Try to listen to more thrash metal bands and you'll see why I can't call them a pure thrash metal band.
The problem with this post is that you still haven't told me what genre you'd put them in. All I get is "they're NWoBHM-ish but not NWoBHM, they're Speed-ish but not Speed" etc.
For the sake of simplicity, I choose to label them as the genre I hear most dominant in their sound i.e. thrash. Or in Venom's case, trash.
And no one who knows what they're talking about calls them black, lyrics are not a factor that determines a genre.
No, you're right, thrash is definitively low on on my list of preferences, but I think I know enough about it to tell if a band is thrash or isn't. (although I could be sadly mistaken)

"they're NWoBHM-ish but not NWoBHM, they're Speed-ish but not Speed" is that really what u got from what i said? Where did I said that? I think I was quite clear. NWOBHM/Speed Metal until the 2000's where they evolved their sound without leaving those elements. Venom Is Venom. Definitely not thrash though, or trash. Anw, I think we should leave this here as it'll end up nowhere. I have more important things to focus on right now, like the exam on medical and public health microbiology i'm taking in 2 days.

Agreed.
Everyone who claims Venom aren't thrash either call them heavy or black. I'm inclined to believe thrash is a much more accurate descriptor than either of those two genres, Motorhead/punk influences aside.

There is totally no thrash in their sound at all. The riffs totally aren't thrash at all. Where's the palm muting. The drumming isn't thrash. The drums aren't thrash, vocals aren't. Yes, they influenced thrash bands but that doesn't make them thrash.
They are purely heavy metal in the vein of Motorhead with a bit more punk thrown in and sounding a bit more extreme due to their total lack of instrument handling, but that's it.

I agree with Troy up there, and say that I would describe their sound as thrash. I find them almost the originators of thrash really... Welcome To Hell Came out it what? '72? thats considerably older than A lot of other thrash bands.
Whether or not Venom sound like "thrash" by the means of palm muting or drumming, or whatever. I belive they still are thrash, light as it may be.
It's almost like first gen metalcore, compare that to modern metalcore, and you've got loads of differences, but they're both still metalcore bands.

Welcome In Hell was out in December 1981 so only 7 months before Metallica's demo.
And like I keep on saying calling Venom thrash is like calling Motorhead thrash, and once again Venome clearly copy Motorhead's sound and added a little more punk that's it.

Can only say really that the album I enjoyed by Venom was 'Welcome To Hell', from then being generic as fvck even though this album was okay I guess.
