The notorious Count is back with yet another addition to the black metal scene with his first English-titled album, Fallen. And while Varg's post-prison releases are a big deal just for the fact that a murderer's name is attached to the music, the material presented isn't exactly anything stunning. There is definitely something stellar about this album though: the cover art, William Adolphe Bouguereau's very own "Douleur d'amour". Unfortunately, the music doesn't reflect the beauty of the painting.

Hvorfor i døden, min venn, og der alene? Hvorfor i glemselens elv du stuper? Hvorfor i mørket, min venn, og der alene, søker du lysets vennlige varme?

Hvorfor i døden, min venn, og der alene? Hvorfor i glemselens elv du stuper? Hvorfor i mørket, min venn, og der alene, søker du lysets vennlige varme?

Is that from "Valen"?

Just heard "Jeg Faller" for the first time. Reminds me of Techno. extremely repeating. sounds good the first time and you get tired to it after 5 listens i guess.

Not a bad album, but the intro (Fra Verdenstreet) and the outro (Til Hel Og Tilbake Igjen) are really weird. I think they seem very out of place considering the songs in between:P

The overall feeling of the album is captivating; it flows quite naturally. Usually guitar and drums are played with only tiny musical variations whilst cycling melodies, riffings and comps. Once in a while bass guitar coats a section, leaving the guitar a bit more in the background, and fills the open space wonderfully with its primitive menacing sound. Varg's spoken parts almost float out of the speakers and fit in brilliantly. Also, I have to give a bonus for the 'werewolf' madness in "Vanvidd".

Totally agree with you! Instrumentally it was good, the vocals were a bit of a let down sometimes, yet in Vanvidd it was crazy the 1st time i heard it
The last time I listend to Burzum was his Hvis Lyset Tar Oss album and it seems the Count has lost some of his trademark screetching howls that sounds like a Wraith on cocaine as he used before his incarceration.

I really like this album. I enjoyed listening to "Belus", and "Fallen" seems to be continuation of the Varg's stride in the same direction. I like the prominent bass, Varg's humming and singing (that "Jeg faller" part is too catchy, though - it's hard to get it out of my head ) and the distinctive guitar sound and melodies. All in all, despite 2011 offering us a rich harvest of black metal releases, this one is my favourite.

This album is pretty good! Obviously not as great as the classic Burzum releases, but still a great listen, still maintaining that dark atmosphere that Burzum fans love.
