The continued intrusion of artificial intelligence into the operations of Metal Storm has made it increasingly apparent that we need to have a stronger and clearer stance on the use of AI. It seems that we are not immune to the gluttonous accretion of artificially generated content currently afflicting every sector of creative endeavor. We are, however, unwilling to take this lying down, and so we have made some updates to the site rules to better establish what we consider acceptable.

First, Metal Storm will not feature bands that are substantially AI-generated. We have deleted from our database the profile for Hail Darkness, the band whose unwitting inclusion in the Metal Storm Awards triggered some of this action, and we will not be adding any similar projects in the future. All bands featured on Metal Storm are added by and subject to the approval of the staff as it is, so what exactly fits this definition will remain within our discretion to determine. We have updated the Featured Bands portion of the FAQs (3.1) to reflect this policy.

Second, Metal Storm will not accept user-submitted publications that are generated or assisted by AI. To be abundantly clear, we do not consider any use of AI in the writing process to be acceptable: no generating reviews wholecloth, no prompting for descriptions or structure, no cleanup, nothing. You listen to the album, you type words into the submission box, and that’s the whole process. Regardless of your level of proficiency in the English language or with the written word or in musical discussion, we want your words, your ideas, and your structures - yours and yours alone. We still have certain standards of quality, but we will accept a less skillfully written review or article that comes from a natural person over a more technically correct description regurgitated by a program. If we have reason to believe that something you have submitted for publication was created in whole or in part through the use of AI, we will take action. We reserve the rights to edit or delete your submission and revoke your permissions to submit again in the future if we believe that you have violated our policy. We have clarified the provisions that we added to our Guest Reviews Rules & Guidelines last year and we have added a separate entry in the FAQs stating our policy on the use of AI in publications. We have additionally added points to our Author Agreement redirecting to the same.

Due to the nature of these programs, it will not always be possible for us to identify immediately whether or to what extent AI has been used in something, and that may result in us admitting bands or writings that are AI-based while denying some that are not. It may be that new information leads us to remove something that we previously approved; we reserve the right to amend our judgments as appropriate. We will continue to stay abreast of the facts as best we can and adapt as needed.

Obviously there is a lot of philosophy surrounding this subject and there are many nuances that bear investigation. You are welcome to discuss your opinions in the appropriate places. Metal Storm's policy is firm, however. In brief, it is the view of the Metal Storm staff that artistic expression is an inherently sentient process. Whether or not the results of something purely artificial can succeed in exhibiting aesthetic appeal or eliciting an emotional reaction is beside the point: for it to be considered "art", it must be made by humans. Or certain species of ape or mollusc. There are the additional legal and ethical considerations to be made about ownership, authorship, plagiarism, etc., but the bottom line is that thinking, feeling people made The Mantle, Symbolic, and Crimson, and that's what we find meaning in, and that's what Metal Storm exists to support.

Some red flags I've seen for far

Rapid Output: Dropped multiple albums and EPs fast (2024-2025), unusual for humans, hinting at AI production.

No Band Member Info: Zero details on who’s behind it—unlike human bands, AI doesn’t need people.

Missing from Metal Platforms: Not on Metallum or Metalstorm, which ditch AI bands, suggesting it’s AI-made.

Each album explores way too many diversity through its instruments sounds, vocals, and style. Producing three full-length albums in under a year would take massive resources - it’s just not realistic, even if all the songs followed the same style it is not quite humanly possible.

Every track echoes the style of other well-known metal bands.

Originating from Denmark, a hub for deep computer science expertise and home to innovators who have invented programming languages and compilers.

It's AI slop. The link to their "record label" is full of "bands" that seem to have no members. Search results for the "record label" (Shadow Circuit Studios) mention AI as well, sometimes in their own descriptions (although it seems like they used to be open about it and now aren't anymore).

Not to mention the music sounds very clearly AI made.

yeah by now I am totally convinced this is AI generated or made with AI music. Surprised there isn’t more of it out there by mow—maybe simply not popping up in front of me so often, which is a good thing anyways.
