Utopia Records was established in 1978 as Australia's premiere Heavy Metal Store, supplying everything under the sun that metal fans need to make their lives complete! We've gone from a small store in Martin Place to our current HUGE 2-level location on Broadway!

We stock - CDs, Vinyl, Teeshirts, Jewellery, Skate decks, posters, DVDs, stickers, autographs, collectibles, patches, books, videos, caps, band logo undies (!!), figurines, magazines, tablature. If it's COOL and METAL/HARD ROCK, chances are WE'VE GOT IT!!! We also BUY and TRADE secondhand and collectible CDs, vinyl, autographs, DVD's. Pretty much EVERYTHING!

We have an extensive selection of rare and out of print titles from overseas, as well as standard releases, with orders arriving several times weekly. Can't find that hard-to-get video or DVD? Let us know and we'll try our best to track it down for you! You'll also find a large selection of autographed movie memorabilia, loads of deluxe-edition movie box sets, and movie magazines!

Utopia also has a basement level where they have local bands playing and also signings with international bands as well.

You can usually find what you're looking for here, although it will more than likely be a little higher in price than say somewhere like JB Hi Fi.

JB HiFi have a faily decent, and up to date, metal collection. I find the dudes at Utopia to be a bit full of themselves and seldom helpful.

Oracle - its worth going if you haven't been before, they have some cool merchandise but its all a bit expensive.

I will never forget this time, about 5 years ago, I went to Utopia to try and find a vinyl copy of Ministry's Just 1 Fix 12" edit - I asked the dude behind the counter (after looking myself for about 20mins) if he could check in the database to see if they had it or knew where I could get it. This dude looks at me and says "Who's Ministry." I just walked away....and have never been back.
I then went to Red Eye Records on King St and the dudes there (upstairs) were heaps helpful. Gave me a few websites to check out and sure enough I found my vinyl in France, paid something like 85 euros for it and had it in my hands within 48 hours (express international courier). So I guess I'd recommend Red Eye over Utopia.

I go to Redeye Records on King St. for my metal cd's. And if they don't have it, they can order pretty much anything in in about a week.

Good store!

I've requested www.metalstorm.ee add Redeye to their locations.

Cool store, great selection (festival prices for merch/gear though? come on!) and a bumper horror movie selection if youre into that sort of thing.

@Black Mass: Whoa! I am admittedly only familiar with the store since its move to its current basement location at Kent/Bathurst, but that anecdote totally took me by surprise! The staff are generally polite, helpful and reasonably knowledgable to boot from my experience, the owner from my experience is quite upfront and helpful when it comes to ordering in something that isn't stocked, offering price quotes, shipping times, info on the record etc. exactly what you'd expect from a competent record store. Sounds like you definetely caught the wrong person at the wrong time

What magical JB Hi-Fi stores are you guys visiting, by the way! Apart from a decent selection at QVB, its a true rarity to see anything more interesting than System of a Down/20 bucks a pop metallica/megadeth/nuclear blast/etc. around me (eastern subs, admittedly -.-) If i had a heart attack from surprise that JB stocked the collectors ed of Mastodon's The Hunter imagine how i felt when i found Kvelertak in bondi junction JB, with "Album of the year 2010?" written on the shrink-wrap in marker?

Ahem, i digress. Cool spot with good range of cd's, vinyl, merch, patches, eddie masks and ALWAYS SOMETHING BITCHIN ON THE SPEAKERS!

As i mentioned before prices can sometimes be dissuading, but it's the best place to go if you're after something a little harder to find.

I rarely go to Redeye anymore...since they've moved, their metal section is far smaller and the range is pretty crap. Utopia all the way now!!
