Reviews 
Lyrics Nuclear Blast Records released a deluxe edition in December 2005. It contains the original album as well as the DVD Live in Cottbus '98 and press pictures. It was also released as a DualDisc.
Relapse Records released a second deluxe edition on February 15, 2011. The album was remastered and reissued in deluxe 2-CD and 3-CD formats, with the additional CDs containing unreleased demo material.

This is it. Finally, after more than 10 years of waiting, we have got It. The one, the only the true thrash metal album. Death have had six releases, have made some drastic changes in their style and have achieved it finally. Despite being labeled as the fathers of death metal, only their first album is truly death metal, mainly due to vocal abilities of main-man Chuck Schuldiner, who was never really a death vocal. His singing has steadily and gradually evolved into more and more shrieking, until now on this album we hear him really screaming. Not many people came to terms with it and have accepted, but it is what thrash metal is all about. Its most distinct feature are the vocals and Chuck has shown what thrash vocals should sound like. I'm not going to start this review with whining about how unfortunate we are for having lost Chuck Schuldiner back in 2001 and The Sound Of Perseverance being the last Death album. Chuck was a great musician indeed, but fate was too cruel to him, and he passed away. The legacy in form of his music though is with us, so let's talk about it. Read more ›› |

What started off from Individual Thought Patterns and continued through Symbolic as a slight progressive-thrash deviation for Death casts its full blown dominance in The Sound Of Perseverance. Just before Chuck goes out with his plans on Control Denied, this album comes out. It is very hard to single out highlight songs from an album with so many exquisite technical creations, nevertheless, "Scavenger OF Human Sorrow", "Spirit Crusher", "Voice Of the Soul", "Bite the Pain", "A Moment Of Clarity" stand out among the tracks. What better name for a metal band? Especially one concentrating so fixedly on the snuffing out of life? The sonic blood-curdling career of mainman Chuck Schuldiner is one of the most celebrated in the development of death metal as a thrash sub-genre. Death were the daddies of this hack 'n' slay brand of guitar violence, and anyone with even the vaguest wish to count themselves as practitioners of extreme noise, from Carcass to Deicide, from Obituary to Cannibal Corpse, would count Schuldiner's unholy racket as a major influence. Modern day death metal and brutal death metal is generally crap but old school death metal rules supreme. Tiamat, Sentenced, Entombed, for example, were at their peak when they played old school death metal.

However it certainly is techy, wankery, and fails in all departments . If I'm every feeling masochistic I'll give this a whirl again to test your classification.

I think this is one of those albums where categorizing it specifically isn't an easy task!  It can't be called simply "progressive metal", as like psykometal said, it is more extreme musically than bands like Dream Theater and Symphony X. And it's not exactly thrash or death metal either, although it does have trace elements of the latter genre. In absence of a clear-cut definition, I'd class it as progressive/melodic death metal, as it is probably closer to that genre than any other, even if it doesn't fit into it neatly.

When I said it can't simply be called "progressive metal" I was NOT insinuating that it can't be called progressive metal of any kind, just that "progressive metal" without any futher sub-categorisation, only includes bands such as Dream Theater. The music on "The Sound Of Perseverence" is clearly prog metal, just not prog metal of the same type as those other bands mentioned, hence it belonging to a sub-genre of prog metal, rather than being "simply prog metal", which was what I stated.

How was my comment any different to that one? When I used the term "simply prog metal" I was using it in the exact same context as psykometal was when he said "simple progressive metal". I was only saying it was a different type of prog metal to those bands, not that it wasn't prog metal of any description. Calling an album "extreme prog metal", or "progressive death metal" doesn't make it any less a prog metal album than a Dream Theater album, just that it needs further or different categorisation than a DT album (but still within the prog genre).

I would agree about it being extreme prog metal, and that is a more ambiguous term than "progressive thrash" or "progressive death metal".
