Dimmu Borgir sucks. Dimmu Borgir are sellouts. Dimmu Borgir have a stupid image and idiotic videos. Dimmu Borgir kick members out with no explanation. Dimmu Borgir is only about squeezing cash from stupid kids who are naive enough to buy their albums. They suck, they suck, they suck!

If you believe that any of the above statements are true, you may as well stop reading now. This review will not take into consideration anything other than music. In other words, if you expect a biased review aimed against one of the most popular extreme bands, you'll be better off helping your father cut the lawn or doing dishes for your mum, because you won't find what you're looking for here.

If you like Abrahadabra by Dimmu Borgir you can make two great mistakes like I did. Let me warn you! The first thing is listening to classical music like Mozart or Haydn. It won't take more than a single stroke to realize that all the so-called great orchestrations are simply nothing in comparison to the dead composers. The second big fail is listening to real and raw black metal. To quote the famous snake, if you do something of that, "your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." This album is neither anything of black metal nor of classical compositions.

Mustis has departed, and no ICS Vortex clean vocals for the first time since 1999. Can Dimmu Borgir escape from the massive attack of the fans this time?

Traditionally, the album starts with an instrumental piece; however, except for some seconds, it is not appealing at all and far away from masterpieces like "Fear And Wonder", "Perfection Or Vanity" or even "Det Nye Riket".

If this was from an totally unknown band it would be titled "masterpiece, great work, amazing, bla bla bla"...

That argument doesn't work.

Not really. If it was by some other band, it'd probably be labeled as "Dimmu worship".

I was talking in abstract, in general, when i said this i could have said the same thing of many albums of many (well known) bands. But this discussion is pointless and won't take us anywhere.

Take Illnath for example. If their albums were from CoF it would happen exactly what i was talking about in the beginning... But they aren't, so they have an average of 8,6 (all albums included), which in my opinion are deserved, cause I think they are great. But if they were CoF or Dimmu albums they probably had been labeled "shitty" , "crap" , "sell-outs" , "music for angry kids", etc etc etc, by those we all know.

I hope you understand now what i was trying to say... If not, who cares also ?

Just enjoy the music (or not).

They are rated this way because no many people had rated them, only their fans. That way it's easy to have good points. (I don't know the band so I can't say for sure).

When a band becomes popular, you spect they do something that proves why they are popular. If a band that plays in a garage makes "Abrahadabra", obviusly, it would be consider a Masterpiece, for the simple reason no one was expecting nothing from them. Dimmu Borgir, as a popular band, needs to prove that they can make good music, you have to expect more from them.

What you said is true, but what about telling bad of them even before the album got out??? The problem is that Dimmu, Cradle, etc etc are condemned at start (by the people i talked about), no matter if album is good or bad. In fact, I have sure most of them rate (with 5 or -) albums from those bands without even hearing them.

Cheers

That argument doesn't work.

It's not a argument, it's the real truth.

And people like you hate elitists because they 'take their opinion as fact'. Let me laugh out loud at the irony.
Those who love things take their opinion as fact as much as those who hate it. And there's no difference between assuming blindly that people who say an album or band sucks are hating it only because it's popular, and automatically assuming an album is bad because it is released by a band you don't like. It's the same kind of attitude, just the other way around.

VezzyRattlehead is right: Your argument holds no value of any kind.
Your argument is as void as the so unfortunately famous 'open-mindedness' argument.

1st of all, hate was a bad choice of words. It come through the "hate" thing. I don't hate anyone in particular. I hate pre-formed choices. I said that about Elitists and Fanboys, so i got a wide spectrum here. It's not if your taste is right or mine is right or whoever taste is right. In fact it has nothing to do with tastes.

Besides almost all your posts in this thread contradict yourself.

If you listen one song of some album and you don't like it, that makes it a bad album? What i read since beggining of this thread had very little to do with music, even before this particular album was made public, this thread were already 3 pages long...

"Single song has been leaked "Gateways" ,sounds better than what i expected."

Written by VezzyRattlehead on 20.08.2010 at 20:02

"Huh, I'll check it out."

You said

"Beware. I almost threw up listening to that shit. "

Now i ask, is this to be taken serious? Maybe you don't liked it, and that was perfectly ok, but by calling it immediately "Shit", you showed everyone, you had pre-concept ideas, and were just waiting the opportunity to say it.

But this one's a pearl

Dictactor (you) Said

"The true reason why the suckage happens at the same time metal bands start to get commercial success is simple: metal bands achieve commercial success by releasing crap targeted at/appealing to the mainstream. Sad thing is most people have awful musical tastes so the more it sucks, the more they like it.

Call me a hater or an elitist, I don't mind. I judge music for what it is. And, in my book, music from those 3 bands sucks balls nowadays. "

That doesn't make a LOL make a ROFTL. Man, you are far superior.... That's the REAL truth... Most people have awful musical tastes, but guess what, You're part of the most people, so your tastes also suckz big time... Your words, not mine.

Probably for you I have shitty musical tastes, but, know what? I don't give a "shit" to what you think about my musical tastes! But if you really think this is a bad album with "shit" songs and you are sure you based your opinion merely on musical content, that's ok, but for your writing it's obvious you had pre concepted issues with anything that came out of this Album.

I could go on and on with your "wise" comments on this thread but i lost enough time on you.

So, to be straight and direct, your speech sucks.

Geez, this is like a neverending roundabout. Simply put, ANYONE fanboy/elitist or otherwise, who treats their opinions on bands/albums as irrefutable facts are numbskulls. If you cannot accept that others can legitimately hold musical opinions that conflict with your own, then that makes you incredibly immature in my book.

The music is moving forward and Dimmu Borgir is a live witness to this , they prove at they go forward and their music is sounds more better to me now ,IMO their video clip was sucks but the music in the album is very Epic and extrordinary but in some songs they use lot of organs and operatic sounds so some how you feel yourself out of metal world and suddenly they kick you back in Metal again , so i rate them 9

Honestly I don't see why there's such a fuss. To me this album sounds 100% Dimmu Borgir. The orchestra makes it even more epic in my opinion. Though this is nothing new, they used orchestra in past songs. Maybe not alot. Anyways, there's never a moment on this album where I think I'm listening to a different band. This IS Dimmu. And this album is very goodl! Not the best I ever heard. But good.

I do miss vortex's clean vocals though. Loved those songs where he opens his mouth, and I will cherish them. But his absence does not make this a bad album. And neither does their "musical evolution".

So in short: Welcome back DIMMU

* And to add one note about commercialism. There's only one reason why I hate bands getting more famous: their live tickets get more expensive.

Albums should be rated by music only. At least this is how i see things. I don't care if Dimmu are clowns or not, what i care about is their music. The rest is futile.

And no, it's not because he "hate" the single, it's because of his entire speech in this thread.

Because that's the way metal is supposed to sound. Metal is not supposed to sound too good. If you polish the sound too much, it just sounds sterile and utterly boring because there is no authenticity left.

This is wrong in so many ways that I can't even describe it...
Let me see:
Metallica "Ride the Lightning"
Megadeth "Rust in Peace"
Death "The Sound of Perseverance"
Slayer "South of Heaven"
Candlemass "Nightfall"
these are just a few very well known albums that have their place in the history of metal as absolute classics.
They all sound GREAT. Their production is clear. Need I say more?

Indeed, they aren't so polished.

By the way, "South Of Heaven" has very good songs and I like them on live versions but I dislike the album and never listen to it, precisely because production doesn't fit the album. It sounds bland + vocals suck and don't fit the music. Production on "Show No Mercy", "Haunting The Chapel" and "Hell Awaits" fitted Slayer's music ten times better.

Well, sure Gateways is the worst thing Abrahadabra has to offer. Well, not my fave thing ever, but I enjoy Abrahadabra more than I did In Sorte Diaboli. Their self-titled song is surely the best on the album IMHO, not even the best, it freakin' rocks, especially on loud volume, the symphonic elements are great, and the song sounds really majestic cause of it. I still can't deny the fact that I miss Simen's vocals, but nonetheless, I expected much much worse. I'd give it a 7.

Agree, I would say it's the best Dimmu song ever, it's allover a nearly perfect song, containing elemntes Dimmu was known for in the past and in the recent present.

This is the first case for me that I've actually really like a self -entitled song. I don't know if some bands use it because they run out of idés for song titles, but this song is already a classic in my opinion to be played live and live for years to come. The song also reflects what the band is about as well: "Forward, onward, MARCH!"

I am truly surprised by this album as Gateways really disappointed me but hey this track is almost an intruder in the album ! If I'm not wrong that the first (and hopefully only) time we have to suffer those terrible female cries ! The other tracks include great ideas and inspiration.

I wonder now if Gateways wasn't supposed to trick us all into thinking that the whole album would sound like this track

I don't get all the hate the song "Gateways" gets. Although I can't help but think that the female voice would sound 10x better with Vortex's epic voice, it's not a bad song. Not at all. It's even a welcome variation to the other songs on the album. I wonder if people would have talked as much hate about Gateways if Dimmu Borgir released a different song from their album as a single.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated topic: when I first saw the Gateways video I thought P!nk had gone metal
