This music is not meant for easy listeners on a family road trip or vacation, or anything like that; it's death metal after all,. Still, the Swedish death metal scene showed us that it needn't just be about having outrageously heavy guitar tone and bass, with deep harsh growls, and brutal lyrics, but that death metal could also be very fun and groovy, with great catchy melodies too. You could even argue that this was where the true origins of what was to become melodic death metal had actually began.

Masterpeice of Swedish DM ... Rivals even Left Hand Path IMO

It is a masterpiece and rivals many other classics, but it isn't the best

yo, this band right here be from sweden and this shit called a debut, meaning it they first one, which make all tha following thing imma say about it even more impressive
just sit back and relax fo a minute, a brotha just wanna take you through an analasis

first off, it aint none a that high-tech mumbo jumbo like is so poplar now wit all tha triggered drums and tha fifty layer guitars and stuff
shit be old school, like i talkin jesus on a dinosaur kinda old school
goes way back and delivers the goods you expect from this kinda old school swedish death metal

second, this debut got this thang called atmosphere, you dig
like when you listen you aint just goin all ya ya, i get it the music be good and shit
no, you sit back and think goddayum, this shit be ill
like it just aint about the instruments bein good, it be more about how the album sound in your soul, way deep inside you

third, those melodical parts aint in there just fo show
they tell too
they tell you how this shit spose ta be, brotha
it sound like real talk from a group of real honest dudes, hard motherfuckas
east side kinda homies who aint here to mess about

seriously, i just sayin listen to how this debut flows
it be they first time writin this shit all down and it sound profeshonal
that right there be the mark of true talent
it aint often tha gitar sound so crunchy, but dayum these ones do sound crunchy

take sum a that punk shit from the olden days and give it some evil atmosphere
tune down the gitars and yell into the mike like a raging loon and you have this masterpiece

Good album, but most certainly inferior to LHP as it doesn't improve on it in any way and doesn't sound quite as good. Surprised LHP is rated lower than this.

For a debut this is absolutely brilliant. Album really brings to mind the best things about Swedish DM, and more. I love the eeriness of "Override of the Overture", "Dismembered" and especially "In Death's Sleep". The solos here also stand out for me quite a bit.

Personally, I like it more than Left Hand Path. High heresy I'm well aware, but whereas Left Hand Path had a slew of slower moments, Like An Ever Flowing Stream never lets up for too long. I like my metal when it's blitzkrieg blast beat assault.

Left Hand Path is godlike in front of this. It has some good moments like "Override of the Overture", "Dismembered" and "In Death's Sleep". I also liked the two last bonus tracks.

One of my favourite death metal albums and pieces of art from Dan Seagrave. His website is worth checking out for more horrorscapes.

9.2/10 for me - 'Override of the Overture' is the standout track. 'Soon to Be Dead', 'Dismembered' and 'In Death's Sleep' are all also fantastic.

(Revisited this album. I had only listened to the opening track. Now I've listened to the full album.)
Fun, energetic old school death metal through and through! I love the guitar sound!

"Override of the Overture" is still by far my favorite track (nothing beats that opening riff! ) The rest is simply solid death metal ! Some riffs I especially like are on "Bleed for Me", "Dismembered", "In Death's Sleep", and "Soon to be Dead" (which is such a short song, but packed full with so much energy! )

And the beautifully intricate, menacing, and mysterious cover art is just the cherry on top

Overall, I rate it a high 8, on its way possibly to a 9

That's about how I think of this album.
Somehow I guess I would call this a death metal classic, though possibly not a top, top notch one.

What top notch death metal can you recommend?

My favourite death metal albums can be found in my All Metal All Time list.
( I dont have genre specific lists because I too often struggle with genre tagging albums.)
If you take all dm albums from, say, the Top 200 you probably have what I consider top, top notch.
You end up with 20-30 dm albums, depending on which albums exactly you consider dm -- that I will leave for you to decide.

One of the best old school death metal albums of all time, about on par with Left Hand Path in terms of quality imo. The groovy buzzsaw riffs are insane, I love the drumming and brutal vocals too, but what makes this sound great is the compressed old school style production.

Lack of atmosphere and writing quality for me, fillers are present as well and there seem to be no memorable solo’s or switches. For me it’s overrated and highly inferior to LHP. Even Carnage debut is superior
