Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2012

The number 23 is to be found everywhere! Take a close look; not only is it the holy number of Discordianism, a song from Behemoth's album Thelema.6 and The Big Lebowski's favourite (and only) bowling lane, it is also the number of editions the Wacken Open Air has under its belt. And to celebrate this synchronicity the world's biggest metal festival has invited a whole slew of big names of the scene: legendary German hard rockers Scorpions will play their very last gig under German sky at the W:O:A 2012! Some go, others return: seminal industrial metal band Ministry just couldn't go cold turkey and are back to play a Best Of show with a side dish of their most recent output Relapse. Swedish power metal band HammerFall will celebrate their 15th Wacken anniversary - having played this festival for the first time in 1997 - with a special show, and so will heavy metallers U.D.O., whose eponymous frontman turned 60 earlier this year.

Other bands on the bill have already announced to bring some friends and special guests. Norwegian epic black metallers Dimmu Borgir, for instance, bring along an entire string orchestra. Moonspell are rather modest, bringing along "only" four cellists, three background vocalists and a percussionst for their acoustic show dubbed "Sombra". A special show has also been announced by Circle II Circle who will be joined by Chris Caffery to play the Savatage album The Wake of Magellan in its entirety. And while Amon Amarth will have to watch in awe as their neighbours Leaves' Eyes sail on stage with a Viking ship, Brazilian thrashers Sepultura will remind you of modern days again with their special guests, the industrial drumming ensemble Les Tambours du Bronx.

Don't care for either of these bands? Well, how about Opeth, Saxon, Volbeat, Machine Head, Cradle Of Filth, In Flames or one of the other 100+ bands then? Just scroll down for a complete listing of all the bands.

Wacken Open Air takes place in - surprise! - Wacken in Northern Germany, a small village with merely 2,000 inhabitants on 361 days of the year. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km northwest of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is officially sold out since November already, but some tour operators (e.g. Metal Train for Germany, Bock Tours for the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Argon Events for the UK) still have some coach trip/festival ticket packages in store. More tour operators can be found here.

Another way to acquire your ticket would be the ticket exchange in the official forum which aims for eliminating the black marketing going on on eBay and other auctioning sites, and reducing the risk of acquiring fake tickets. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in English) and here (in German).

They decided to do away with the campground reservations. Apparently they couldn't find guards for it because all of them had their feelings hurt during the last years and don't want to do this anymore.

New confirmations in as well. Djerv, BugGirl, Blaas Of Glory and Russkaja. The latter two being frequent flyers. But now Djerv and Dimmu are on the same festival. If they don't bring Agnete Kjølsrud on stage for "Gateways", I'll be massively disappointed.

I read the news article but couldn't understand really why the "guards" were so badly treated... maybe you have any idea why this happened?

I read the news article but couldn't understand really why the "guards" were so badly treated... maybe you have any idea why this happened?

I do. It's a long story really. People were massively frustrated by the redundant rule saying they can only enter the reserved ground after wed 8am. We were among them last year and 2010. Arrived around 10pm on tuesday and had to wait 10 hours befor we could set up camp. So we snuck in behind them without headlights and set up in complete darkness. They didn't realize we were there until we were done and fired up the generator and stereo. Then for three years in a row we got in a big argument with them. Including them trying to tear down the tents. Last year some people from the facebook camp managed to get onto the ground before it was even guarded during in bright daylight on Tuesday. When the guards came they made the facebook campers leave and an agreement was made that the tents could stay as long as the people stayed away. Later that night the guards themselves broke that rule and started tearing down tents. That is clearly damaging of foreign goods and punishable by law in Germany.
So I really do understand the frustration with the people. It's hard enough to manage a group of 80 people to arrive in time and in the right numbers, much less have them all arrive after a specific time. Some of the people in our camp had to travel some 1000km to get there. Pretty much like you every year.
They also complained about the numbers being exaggerated and groups arriving in smaller numbers than announced and about groups using random space on the ground as opposed to the one they were assigned. We did the same last year as our ground was surrounded by other grounds and not accessible from one of the roads. Quite a bummer when you arrive with 30 cars and plan to leave Saturday night. So we were forced to camp at another location and carefully chose a spot that was not occupied by another camp. But the Wacken people don't care for that. They have a very narrow point of view and aren't open to reason at all. So I guess this was inevitable. Loosening these bullshit rules and taking another five minutes to layout the camps so that they're all car-accessible would have been admission of being wrong I guess.
Anyway, they said in that news post that they are open to suggestions. I sent them a long email representing my whole camp and explained the situation to them. Including ideas how to make the stuff simpler and easier for all parties. No response so far. We'll see. But this year could finally be my last one. Wacken is losing it's defining features. These things were what made the festival special. If they cut this out for pure arrogance, they are just another festival and there's no reason to go anymore. Especially not the bands.

it was actually 2100 km by train when I came there in 2010..

anyway I see there are some organisational issues, but imo the best reason not to go to Wacken is to protest against the gargantuan commercial machine that is the "Wacken" or "WOA" brand..

You could strip naked and then buy every single piece of clothing you might need from the store with the Wacken logo on it, that aside from all the camping equipment you could possibly need, condoms, beer, jewelry, lighters, stickers, I'm pretty sure they're gonna make Wacken microwave ovens soon. That's not to discount all the "extra" attractions like the wrestling tent, the medieval village, sure, the food is amazing there, but it opens up a whole new side to Wacken, and it has little to do with the music (aside from the 7-8 folk bands that play there sometime). I predict that in a few years if the festival grows further they're gonna have a real Wackenland built, with the amazing Full Metal Rollercoaster and the Full Metal Haunted House featuring none other than the most scariest, faster, harder, louder and most METUHL of German Metal Royalty such as ze queen of metuhl, Doro, UDO, Onkel Tom, and of course that blond guy from Subway to Sally nobody cares about! all performing the anthem of this special 29th edition of Wacken: Full Metal Wheelchair!

It's mind-blowing how far these guys can extend the idea of a metal festival. If you look at the "Specials" menu in the WOA front page http://www.wacken.com/de/woa2012/ it would seem they put more work into marketing than getting the actual bands to play.

Imo this needs to stop and I'm happy to say that this year I'm not going to go to Wacken. I have money for the trip, but I will not be going because I don't want to be part of such a gargantuan marketing war machine that Wacken has become in the past 2 years, and they don't have a good enough line-up to back all this shit up (in 2010 and 2011 they did imo though). In this spirit, the song "We Are the Metalheads" (remember in 2009 when they had this as the Wacken-hymn?) is a monument of irony. Two of the lyrics from the song's breakdown are "Money indeed makes you blind, And you love to walk on a carpet of lies" - it almost seems she was talking directly to the WOA high management team here.

Seriously, Sweden Rock's festival ticket costs about double that of Wacken's, but at least they have a great line-up year after year (as well as lasting 5 days, as opposed to Wacken with just 4), and don't shove all this crap down everyone's throats.. all they got is Sweden Rock Magazine, Festival, and Cruise, and that's the end of their marketing scheme. Hellfest is even more stripped-down, my only complaint is that the bands can't be enjoyed to the full with just 40-minute, 1 hour or at the very most 90 minute shows (only for headliners), which is yet another issue with Wacken. So yeah, I'll save a few euros to get to France next year, they finally got me

I hate Wacken

I know where you come from. It's not like we didn't have this discussion like 20 times before. But I'm emotionally attached to this festival. I know the smart thing would be to just say 'go fuck yourself' and stop attending the WOA. But I can't. We will never manage to get our group to move to another festival just like that. Wacken has always been Wacken for us. If we take the logical step and look out for another festival to go to, we'll probably split up into ten or more groups each year attending their own festivals for different tastes of music. I know it's naive to assume things will change back but that is what I'd like most. If Wacken could be today what it was back in 2003/04, that would be just perfect. Unfortunately, fetivals are like mediocre TV shows. At first they start good, have clever ideas and an interesting plot, then the producers realize that there's money in it and start to try and maximize the revenue. People generally hate that. But once the makers, of a TV show or a festival, succumb to dollar-vision, there's no going back. All charme gone, just like that. What you end up with is nine seasons of Scrubs, ten seasons of Friends, 7+ seasons of How I Met Your Mother and not even one of the amazing Firefly or other clever projects like Jericho.
It's the same with accounting guys and engineers by the way. We can do our best to build amazing products or write awesome software. There's always an accounting idiot somewhere above without too little understanding and too much arbitrament. The idiots pushing the money are the ones making decisions.

...

I'm not saying I hate Wacken, it was (and still is, for a few months) the only open-air festival I've ever visited, and both times have been incredible experiences, I just hate the marketing side of it. and I get what you mean by a favorite festival, I think everyone has a favorite pub/club/etc. that turned mediocre at one point but keep coming back for the memories or stuff like that. I realize I may have come across as angry during the last post here, so to clear it up, by "having a shit line-up this year" all I'm saying is that they need to drop In Flames, Saxon and Amon Amarth and get some other bands that haven't played Wacken 3-4 times already..

We all know that is not going to happen and that next year there's gonna be Motorhead and Grave Digger among the headlining bands though :p

I'm mostly pissed about ChthoniC in the craphead city fscking tent. All the suckers play the big stages, even ChthoniC did last time they played. But this time they make people leave the grounds at prime time and squeeze into that toilet of a tent.

Any clue on what the Surprise Act may be?

My money is on Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock, which is not the same as Michael Schenker Group btw and is actually a very good live band I saw at Sweden Rock Festival (report coming soon! ). The guy will certainly be there for Scorpions' "last open air show in Germany" so basically I'm 90% sure it's gonna be them.

First time they played Wacken, they also played on the W.E.T. Stage. I believe this Bullhead City Circus will be an improvement, it seems to be a lot like the Temple/Altar stages at Hellfest. And Hellfest had Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom playing there.

StS playing 3 times in 4 years, that would be redundant even for Wacken.

although wait, I just remembered Endstille is in that exact situation, so maybe it's not a far-fetched idea after all. they can get D-A-D on stage to play "It's After Dark" as the last song and have Doro, UDO, Tom, Chris Boltendahl, Tobias Sammett and that woman from Holy Moses as extremely special guests.

Who said who to what now? The WET stage at least is part of the big ground. There is enough overlap without having to spend half an hour moving in and out of the grounds. The number of safe bands has increased so much in recent years that I'm really looking forward to the small gems here and there. But I still do want to see the big names. And running around between the grounds isn't exactly the best way to do that

Ah, I thought your actual beef was with the tent, not with the location of the tent.

Man, it would be hard to have to attend festivals because all your friends are going (yeah Corrupt this is regarding our latest discussion here), I don't know anyone else around here who ever went to open-air festivals in other countries nor people who can afford it, so I can go to pretty much any fest I want, I will still know about 2-3 people max

Is there going to be an official webcast of the festival like last year? I'm still kinda sad I missed Iced Earth's show but I don't want to miss Hammerfall's anniversary show as I'm still a big fan of their early period.

Iced Earth? I hope you did see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z90wWEOmp_A
And I'm positive the public channels will broadcast some concerts again, so once they've aired, they will undoubtedly find their way onto Youtube.

Youtube is currently down here but if you linked the webcast of Barlow's last gig with IE then yes, I saw it, imo it was a great show but way too short. There were some omissions like Watching Over Me and some other songs that simply needed to be played with his last show.

Saturnian arn't playing the festival anymore due to being disqualified from the Metal Battle apparently for signing a record deal. Forbidden have also pulled out and there have been a couple of other set-time changes as well.

Oh and Diablo Swing Orchestra is the TBA band on the Saturday playing on the Wackinger stage

well, it is the last band on the bill at the world's biggest and most commercial metal festival, I wasn't really expecting a Mercyful Fate or a special Candlemass show with Messiah Marcolin or some other kvlt stuff. there are some bands out there that seem to have established a reputation of playing Wacken almost every 2, at most 3 years and Edguy is one of them.

Edguy is a great live band though, I think it is quite fitting that they end the whole festival shenanigans.

Just watched the UDO stream. A strong concert, but I couldn't help but notice the fuckups on "Head Over Heels" and "Princess of the Dawn". Could have been a magical anniversary concert but it was just a good show.

I did like how they played Metal Heart and Animal House, very energetic and engaging.
