Space Metal!

***Currently working through suggestions and adding some spacey non-metal things when they cross my mind***
As a lover of all things sci-fi I find metal to be the most accommodating of genres when it comes to themes of space/aliens. This is a list of those albums which use this theme and/or evoke an overall 'spacey' atmosphere and which I find particularly intriguing and enjoyable. No order for now and a work in progress (recommendations most welcome) Last Updated: 9th April 2014

Glad you liked them! I also wanted to suggest Transcending Bizarre?, a good avantgarde/symphonic black metal band, maybe you already know them. I especially like their songs "A New Saturn!" and "The Music Of The Spheres".

I'm most familiar with their "The Four Scissors" album but I can't believe it didn't occur to me to add them before, thanks for the suggestion! It's been a good while since I've listened to them, do you have a particular album in mind? I'd describe 4 Scissors as more of a symphonic sound more-so than spacey. I was thinking "The Misanthrope's Fable" perhaps? Bit more spacey that one, from what I remember.

I also mostly know The Four Scissors, and just getting into The Serpents' Manifolds now (it was f*cking hard to get, even in illegal mp3 ), and still haven't heard The Misanthrope's Fable. But I think TSM has a more spacey feel, in the lyrics and the music too.
And one more band just came into my mind (sorry, I can't stop ): Edenbridge. Now they are symphonic/power/progressive metal, but in the past they had 2 albums, Arcana and Aphelion which were power metal with lyrics about stars, the universe and Star Trek (Farpoint Anywhere, Suspiria), and the music had this atmosphere too.

I'll have a listen through their discog too, see which one's would fit the list best. Haha, the more suggestions the merrier! Edenbridge... hadn't thought of them either. They were even kind enough to put a nice cosmic cover on the Aphelion album. I'll add those two albums, thanks!

Great list. I only have one complaint though, which is that The Human Equation is on it. It's only non-space themed Ayreon album!

If you remove it you'll have my . It doesn't really fit this list, think about it.

Shhh, no-one's noticed yet.

Giving some thought to it, it does carry the same spacey sound and is tied to the space theme of the other albums. Generally I've tried to include spacey sounding albums with themes that have something remotely to do with space themes, initially I would have said The Human Equation is a bit more than "remotely" space themed. Perhaps not enough though? When I first made this list I thought of including anything with sci-fi themes, but that would be a much greater task, there'd be loads of albums I could include that aren't primarily about space. The Human Equation might fit under that category as its themes are primarily to with the human experience not space.
What do you think, does it have more to do with sci-fi without a space theme?

Haha. I guess I noticed it because I know Ayreon albums better than most people on MS. Yeah, The Human Equation is about human experiences, emotions (though all Ayreon albums are) and relationships etc., but I still don't hear anything space-related when I listen to the album... it might have that spacey sound a bit, but that's as far as it goes in my opinion. That's what I think... and despite that I think it doesn't really belong in this list, it's an amazing album, so it definitely doesn't bring this list down.

And what the hell, I just thumbed up your list anyway, because I see a lot of great albums here. Do what you will with The Human Equation, but I still think it doesn't belong here.

I have the perfect album for this list: Apocynthion - Sidereus Nuncius. http://apocynthion.bandcamp.com/

Perfect in the sense of its theme, which is extremely obvious even in the first seconds of the first song... that is, if you've seen the movie in which the conversation takes place. If you haven't seen this movie, then you're either not a movie lover or shame on you. Just kidding (well, partly), but I'll tell you the movie if you don't know what I'm referring to.

I think its interesting how identifiable HAL is outside the context of the film. I must admit I've only seen it once, so you've given me an urge to watch it again, I expect I might be more impressed with it now than the 16 yr old me was. Oh and I'm far from a movie buff! Though when I see films either recent ones in the cinema or oldies I'll usually head for some sci-fi as a preference.

As for the music, I'll have a good listen through. I had it on my things to check list when I saw Nef's staff pick. Thanks for the suggestion, thematically it's perfect, so on the list it goes!

Hehe, I expected you to know it. I admit I've only seen it once as well many years ago (8 years or something, so I was 18), but I still was blown away by it. I might watch it again as well soon, simply because I'm curious if my opinion has changed after all these years. Actually I was a movie buff until I discovered I enjoy tv-series more than movies a few years ago, so I watch(ed) a ton of tv-series. And despite the fact that I like sci-fi movies a lot, it's far from my favourite genre. But I really like most genres when it comes to movies/tv-series, except for romantic (comedies), musicals (I love Sweeney Todd though, the one exception for me), mindless action movies (I dislike all those dumb movies with Van Damme, Seagal etc. in it, can't take them seriously), superhero movies (I only really like the whole Batman franchise and the first Spider-Man movie, but I can't enjoy any of the others) and Disney/Pixar films (well, I don't hate them, I just think they're extremely overrated most of the time and don't really care a lot about them). Anyway, I went on a bit too long about this I think (have a look at my profile to see my favourite movies/tv-series if you're interested). Glad you added the album.

My favourite genres are probably historical fiction/fantasy and sci-fi. And I've always enjoyed Disney/Pixar, though I don't keep up with the latest ones much. Superheroes are great too, Spiderman, Batman, Iron Man, Avengers. Some of them aren't that good though.
You know talking about films makes me wonder whether there are any movies with space metal in them? Or sci-fi movies with metal in them at least. Can't think of any off the top of my head.

lol Steven Seagal XD. What about things like Terminator? Kind of sci-fi + action, are those sort watchable?

I see. Our tastes in movies differ a bit too I can see. Sadly, I cannot think of any movies with metal in them, though it's a weird thought if you ask me, since what makes you think those even exist?

I think first two Terminator movies are absolute classics and I think they're excellent (I like the second one more), but haven't had the urge to watch the third one and the fourth (Salvation) was just "okay", not even close to being great. So to answer your question: yes, definitely watchable for me. I also enjoy action movies to a certain degree, just not blockbuster action movies. My absolute favourite action movie is Heat. Simply a brilliant movie. Have a look at my top 40 movies (all the 10/10 movies I've seen, out of 1200+ titles) list at my profile if you're interested, then you'll see I enjoy almost every genre there is.

Dunno, just a thought. Would make a sci-fi flick pretty cool with some metal in the soundtrack, providing the movie is decent of course!

Haven't seen Heat, I'll have to have a watch. Your list seems top-notch to my inexperienced eye. There's one film I've been meaning to watch on your list, House of Sand and Fog. Kingsley has been a great actor in everything I've seen him in, I really enjoyed his portrayal of Gandhi.

Anywho, getting a bit off topic.

By the way for this list you might want to listen to the latest Between The Buried And Me. Not sure if it's your thing, but it's space-themed prog and I like it a lot.

Hehe, I see what you mean. Well, in my opinion Heat is a must-see movie even if you're not into that kind of movies. For me it's pretty much perfect, but it's been a really long time since I saw it and I'm way more critical than I used to be, so I might disagree with myself here once I see it again. And yeah, I really like my own list too since there's a lot of variety to be found... basically anyone will find at least 1 movie on it that he/she likes, I think. House of Sand and Fog isn't exactly the best movie on the list, but it still impressed me immensely as it's very dramatic and emotional (in a heavy way, not romantic comedy emotional level) and Kingsley is indeed a great actor. The great thing for me about that movie is that you feel sympathy for Connelly as well as for Kingsley, and in the end it's pretty hard to pick a side (not that you have to...). Anyway, send me a PM to let me know what you think of it after you saw it.

Damn you! Finally found something that qualifies for this list and you beat me to it... I'm talking about Enshine, which I just discovered through Facebook and I immediately thought of this list since it's space metal.

Beat you to it, been listening to the stream on sputnikmusic. Amazing how anything Lindholm is in has that instantly recogniseable spacey sound. This one's really building up to be a great album judging from the first few listens.

How about Lunarsea - Hundred Light Years? I noticed this one in the shoutbox just now.

Anyway, I find your list to be very helpful in finding new space metal. It's nice you listed the genres because I don't enjoy all genres, so I can easily pick the ones I'd potentially like.

Although I do wonder why you haven't ranked them in a specific order.

That's a great album, after a few listens I think it's one of the better melodeath recent releases I've heard. Fits the list too, added.

Thanks! I'd thought about putting it in some order of preference but decided against it. It'd probably be a good idea to group them according to genre, which I've only very roughly followed before.

Actually I have yet to hear the whole album.

Listing them according to genre is a pretty good idea I'd say. That way it's easier for people who are looking for specific genres.

I have another suggestion for this list (yeah I know, I keep coming back ): Progenie Terrestre Pura - U.M.A. http://progenieterrestrepura.bandcamp.com/album/u-m-a (I would call it ambient/atmospheric Industrial blackened post metal).

Not trying to be annoying now, but it really surprises me you haven't added this album yet. Absolutely fantastic album and it's perfect for this list.

Looks like I'm the only one (recently) who's updating this list.

Man if it weren't for you the list wouldn't be updated at all, I'm that lazy with it these days. You're not be annoying in the slightest, in fact you reminded me I still haven't sorted this list more like I said I'd get around to doing.

I've been meaning to check out that one after the recent review of it here, I'm certain it'll fit in nicely on the list.

Haha, alright then. Well, no hurry of course, but I was just listening to the album again and noticed it wasn't on this list, hence why I recommended it.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure you'll like the album.
