For a few years, the "happy folks" of Paradise Lost were used to making excellent albums such as Shades Of God or Icon, but nothing could really prepare us to this nuclear bomb, Draconian Times. This album, released in 1995, is, more than a confirmation, a real coup d?etat in the metal world: every listening, every note is a perpetual rediscovery. Tracks like 'Hallowed Land', 'Elusive Cure' or 'Forever Failure' exhale such beauty that there are no exact words to describe the emotion they make us feel.

Absolutely epic album, i really cannot find fault with this at all, except for the slightly weaker tracks that are 'Yearn for Change' and 'I see your face',but even they aren't short of impressive.I really cannot wait to see Paradise lost at BOA 2012\m/

Well, it's definitely their most "sexy" out of the metal albums they have released if you ask me. I could have said One Second or Host but they aren't metal so they couldn't take part of the discussion we had on the other thread.

Me neither but I'll bet it does the job far better than Gothic.

As far as I'm concerned, the meaning of their name is older than Opeth's frontman.... But Joe is right though. Their music is fucking hawt.

Well, not only that... I simply don't like it that much. Quite overrated
If I wanted to get it on with an "evil" PL album I would pick just pick their debut.

Oh well. I pretty much prefer this one and Icon to their first two and everything else after, but the first two can be quite nice. I've never listened to anything in the genre so the novelty factor is there for me, though it will probably fade if I ever get further into it.

To be honest... I highly doubt it. Take this word from someone who is neck-deep in the genres this band has played in their first couple of albums: The band is well known for a reason. I've heard my share of things and I'm yet to listen to a death/doom album that has the evilness, madness and overall sound of their debut, or a death/doom/gothic album like their second one (although I don't like it that much).

I could go on with the later three (Shades Of God being a very unusual take on doom with the thrash elements thrown in the mix) but I think you get the point... I'm yet to hear stuff like these guys has done without being a carbon-copy. While I don't get as surprised as before (doesn't that happen with every genre?), they haven't lost their "different than the rest" vibe at all.

That's why you can see their legacy in many bands nowdays. Specially Gregor Mackintosh's guitar style. Which has always being their trademark ever since the beginning.

That actually sounds fairly logical, I could write the same thing about Images And Words

...and I suppose you don't think that album is less peculiar after all these years, uh?

To me, real masterpieces are never 100% obvious... They get there with some time after listening to many other albums and finally realise that the sound of that first album you heard was pretty unique.

I gave PL's debut a 7 at first.... now it has just getting better the more I listen to it but specially the more I listen to everything else, that's why nowdays I have it as a 9.

No, it isn't. I've played it a lot but there's always something that hits me in it, something that says that no one will ever be better than this. Even if there are albums I'm more attached to, this is so monumental and significant that it gets to me every time.

Releases like those are proof how much people's tastes insanely differ; the worth of such albums is proven by the fact that not a lot of people that hear them actually dislike them, and yet, I can approach Paradise Lost's early albums, listen to them for a while and say "hmm, cool groove" and forget about them for a couple of months, while you'll listen to Images And Words, say "nice melody there" and probably won't return to it again. But we're a part of the army madly in love with the opposing release.

Heh, yeah... the difference now is that PL is kind of comming back to the quality it used to have (their last one was pretty much right in between Icon and Draconian Times both in sound and quality).

While poor DT is going... well, yeah. (Heheheh Yes, I wanted to go there).

Oh God don't remind me. :/

I've listened to pretty much only DT during the past week, as I always do when I'm down, and the difference between the old and new, or even the mid and new is... it's not the same people anymore. It's sad. Like I posted in the album thread, I hope for a return to form, but I shouldn't dare to hope for anything anymore.

Cheers to Paradise Lost though!

Initially I rated this album with an 7, I was immensely wrong.

Every song has its own and distinct melody, combined with an haunting atmosphere, making it a excellent journey from the very first second 'till the last song. Definitely a masterpiece of heavy music.

After multiple listens, i still cannot fathom why people on MS praise this p-o-c so much. This is neither gothic or death/doom, but straight forward heavy metal, a very bland and bad kind. Fast and rather aggressive instrument works that show little to no melody nor progression, leaving no place for atmosphere whatsoever. Extremely similar songs, none could really stand out from the rest or just not being boring for that matter. The vocal is ABSOLUTELY hollow with no emotions, and just to make things worse, it really contradicts with the music and becomes annoying really fast. A joke of music.

This album is, in my opinion, ridiculously overrated. While it's still very good, it's nowhere near the masterpiece it's made out to be. Honestly, I think their first three albums are all better than this.
