Fine elaborated and well produced Death Metal, weird looking but very intelligent musicians, usual sometimes even funny Death Metal lyrics (there's something in "Habitual infamy" that makes me laugh I don't know why), blasphemous and ultra fast music, all this gather in one album named "Effigy Of The Forgotten".

The best death metal album IMO is also a Suffocation album, but not this one.

Pierced From Within?

I prefer Effigy much more, it's got that perfect chunky guitar sound. Pierced is good, one of the best Suffocation albums, but it falls short to Effigy for me.

Maybe some of the most decent Dm production on this album IMO.Also find the beginning riff of Mass Obliteration very similar to Napalm Death's Vision Conquest's main riff.

Would you still say that today?

I think Suffo is awesome, and this is probably their best. It's tied with Pierced for me.

5 years ago I was much more into the more "brutal" side of death metal. I'd probably still put this in my top 25 of all time, maybe top 10, but definitely not best ever. I definitely prefer it over Pierced, which is also a great album but not quite as impressive to me.

The production holes this album back from beating PFW. The clicking bass drum is unfortunate because the rest of the album is solid. I think their sound was really refined perfectly on PFW and I personally consider that the best death metal album of all time.

I never used to think highly of this album but it's slowly grown on me over the years, and I've learned to appreciate it more. I'll admit it's not been the easiest for me to digest as it's way more complex and technical than my general taste, I'm more of a groovy/melodic guy when it comes to death, which is why I've always preferred OSDM over brutal/technical death. The main thing that made me keep wanting to come back to this is that deliciously infectious guitar tone, the technical songwriting eventually fell into place over time and patience.
