Cool idea for a list, I know I've "surfed" this topic before and not had much luck. Darzamat's album "Solfernus' Path" has some cool Beauty/Beast vocal combinations, as well as some really good music. Might fit your list, but it's one of those releases that encompasses many genres, goth, black, heavy and doom.

Widow's Weeds... does that album kill or what?
Nice list. I think I'll revisit my gothic past again and pick up some unknown ones along the way.

Interesting list, Draven's suggestion of Darzamat is a good one and also check out the band Via Mistica. They are very influenced by the early doom era of Theatre of Tragedy.
Leaves' Eyes is also one for the list, although not completely gothic, they work. Check their debut 'Lovelorn' too.

Thanks (for the +1)! I just listened to the album and while I liked it, I'm not sure whether it's the right album for this list. Funny MS has labeled them as "gothic metal", while it's definitely not gothic metal. It just has gothic influences if you ask me. I'll re-listen to it tomorrow and then decide if I add it or not.

Yeah, I just had to put Widows Weeds at #1, since it's probably the best damn album in this genre that I've heard (and it was one of the first albums too, as I bought it about 8 years ago or so). Lake of Sorrow blew me away just months back and is so amazing it's at #2 right now.

I must admit I still haven't listened to "Velvet Darkness" enough to form a final decision, as I have still yet to buy it (which I'm going to do this month )... so that being said, it could be ranked higher than it is now. Also, keep in mind pretty much every album is 9/10 or 10/10 material for me, except for the last few albums. Adding ratings could be a good idea, but then again, I did that with my other list too and I just couldn't keep up since I need to hear every album at least 3-5 times before rating it. And you're right, it's not exclusively gothic metal, but these kind of vocals are found most of the time in (symphonic) gothic metal. I didn't know Unholy had female vocals until now, so I'll be sure to check them out.

I decided to change the list a bit by NOT ranking them anymore. It's just too hard to me to decide how they should be ranked, while it's easier for me to rate them, hence why I just added ratings. That way, you can get a good idea of how great the albums are on this list, although it's just my opinion. Few albums really deserve a 10, so those are pretty rare. I'll add the best songs per album soon, when I have the time to do so.

Oh, and I added Darzamat's album... although it's not typically this genre, it does still qualify for this list I think.

Both albums are male growled/female sang vocals (about 50/50 and 40/60 split respectivly). Virgin Black used a soprano on their Requiem albums to share the vocals, and London dropped his singing voice completly on Fortissimo in favor of a deep growl.
Westerholt did about 40% of the vocals on Within Temptation's first album (Enter), all growled. They dropped this formula on all subsequent releases (save a bonus track on Silent Force).
None of the other works of these bands qualify, though.

You need the first two albums from Orphanage on there. Without them there wouldn't be After Forever and Epica and Within Temptation's debut
But like MC Vice said Enter by WT does have harsh vocals on it, courtesy of Robert Westerholt (not to be mistaken with Martij Westerholt )

Seeing that some of those bands in your list don't have anything to do with gothic metal musically I would also suggest The Gathering - Always.

If memory serves me right, they started with the third album but it doesn't have that much tbh, just a few passages but with their fourth (and last) album the female vocals are very dominant.

Fantastic albums (and band).

First of all, since this list is somehow really popular (a lot of views, not thumbs up ) I started listening like a madman to a lot of the suggested albums and added 10 new ones (weirdly enough, I honestly liked every single album I checked out), thus improving the list greatly! However, keep in mind I'll add the ratings once I heard every album enough (3 times usually, so it could take some time)... and I do not rate albums carelessly!

Added the debut of To Cast A Shadow, that's some good stuff indeed! I listened a bit to Stille by Lacrimosa, but (correct me if I'm wrong) there aren't harsh vocals to be found, thus they don't qualify... do they have an album with grunts?

That album certainly is amazing. At this very moment, my absolute favourite album on this list is Lake Of Sorrow by The Sins Of Thy Beloved, a true masterpiece. So listen to that if you want to listen to this genre again.
