Most Talented Vocalists In Metal

My other lists:
Tasty Stuff Not Currently Featured On MS
So I Heard You Like Opeth...

A concise list of my metalhead man-crushes (now featuring ladies.)

While there is little introduction required for some of these bands and their front(wo)men, there are no words that can accurately describe such jaw-dropping talent anyhow. The albums and youtube links listed are meant to display the full capacity of vocalists' talents, not the bands' most quality or popular tracks - click the links below and behold the prowess.

Many tears will be shed on your behalf if your favourite vocalist isn't here. That being said, any suggestions are more than welcome. A star (★) indicates that the vocalist is exceptionally versatile. If you believe that a certain vocalist deserves a (currently unaccredited) star, then post a few YouTube tracks to support your case.

Avoided criteria:
- Consistency with live performances
- Emotional delivery
- Ability to write aurally appealing vocal lines
- Ability to compliment the music

i.e. The style performances are judged solely on technical ability.

Here are the tracks I've allocated to the vocalists so far in the order of the list below. If you have suggestion which better showcases any vocalist's talents or if any of the link aren't working, please let me know.

No Halford? No Damian Wilson?

I'm trying to keep the list limited to unique vocalists. While talented, Halford has some pretty typical vocals imo and I don't really like Judas Priest so it's hard to appreciate the vocals For me, a top notch vocalist is one who has an impressive range and complete control over the grit in their voice from clean to growl; Spencer of Periphery or Eric of Textures are the archetype vocalists this list is based on.

As for Damian, the list is likely to expand and as I have Headspace's debut, it is only a matter of time.

Check out my list for the greatest vocalists in hard rock/metal here:

http://www.metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=3039

Just scrolling through the list, it would be consistent if by greatest you mean most publicized/well-known. There are several vocalists there who don't possess any talent imho (e.g. Anders Friden, Angela Gossow, Chuck Schuldiner, James Hetfield). That's not to say I believe they are bad vocalists, I just think their performances are pretty average. I don't mean to offend but I'm very picky when it comes to vocalists

By the term "greatest vocalists", I mean those who not only possess a voice with various capabilities, but also have been an influence for many other singers. I don't expect everyone to agree with the choices I have made, but it's one thing to say "I don't like James Hetfield's voice", and another one to say "James Hetfield has no talent as a vocalist" without any argument to back it up.

I think you might be getting the wrong notion here. I love Hetfield's vocal style, however it is anything but phenomenal. Your list seems much more coherent now that I understand what you were attempting

I guess we're simply doing different things; I'm attempting to keep this list as concise as possible.

Nice idea for a list. But can you make the links clickable for the lazy people?

Don't have enough time right now, but I'll come back later to check the links out.

Yeah, you might get more than you bargained for if you had a man-crush on Halford. Still, I'd have him in my list - great metal vocalist. I'd also have Bruce Dickinson and definitely Ronnie James Dio.

Nice list, but you're missing quite a few essential vocalists here in my opinion. I know that doom metal isn't your favourite subgenre, but there's no denying that there are some truly amazing vocalists to be found in this category. Here's a few (in my opinion) excellent vocalists (not all in doom metal, but mostly) along with great songs:

- Patrick Walker from 40 Watt Sun/Warning (most emotional vocals you'll ever hear and the music is also incredibly melancholic): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esAK9sKeArw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FMr61LyEV0
- Johan Längqvist/Messiah Marcolin from Candlemass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlQHJU4SD88 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWNS_cBNpeY (both my favourite songs from the first two albums)
- Tom Sedotschenko from Evereve (the voice of this guy totally blew me away, really incredible clean vocals): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFfTgZPRGRw
- Daniel Bryntse from Isole (thanks for the amazing production his voice is extremely clear): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orsrfmnqyj4
- Daniel Brennare from Lake of Tears (had a great clear clean voice (yes, HAD... when I saw them live last year his vocals sucked, sadly) and a more rough voice): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LKFMbP5ISY (very clear soft vocals) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PFZH-8gw6A
- Fernando Ribeiro from Moonspell (different kinds of vocals, all great): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2iiEeoIZgE
- Aaron Stainthorpe from My Dying Bride (one of my favourite vocalists ever since he has amazing emotional clean vocals as well as sick brutal growls): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmjL3eoQF0k
- Warrel Dane from Nevermore (love the vocals of this guy, very easy recognizable if you heard them): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKQclngixjU
- Thomas Helm from Noekk (and Empyrium of course) (his soft, calm voice is stunning and simply fantastic): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9uRCFduU5M
- Juhani Palomäki from Yearning (and Colosseum) (great characteristic clean vocals as well as good growls): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig_ar6vMS20

Most of these songs are my favourites from their respective albums by the way. Good luck on checking these vocalists out (I spent quite some time on your suggestions as well when you suggested a lot of debut albums ).

Yay for Shaolin Death Squad and Evergrey! Two bands with EXCELLENT male vocals that rarely get credited as such.

Most of these songs are my favourites from their respective albums by the way. Good luck on checking these vocalists out (I spent quite some time on your suggestions as well when you suggested a lot of debut albums ).

Haha cheers man, I'll have a look when I find the time. Last few weeks have been truly hectic, the list isn't even complete yet Also I guess the list is limited to vocalists I've been exposed to and I have an affinity for prog so that's what most of the list is comprised of. I'm more than happy to check out other bands though. Sometimes the music gets in the way of me enjoying vocalists' talents, but we shall see

Certainly two of the best vocalists I've ever heard I can't see how anyone would say otherwise....

Nice idea for a list. But can you make the links clickable for the lazy people?

Don't have enough time right now, but I'll come back later to check the links out.

Also I'm thinking I could post the youtube links in the comments, as you have. Good idea? At least then they'd be clickable

Edit: I just discovered I can put links into the description. I'll do that

Just check 'em out and decide for yourself if you want to add them. Most I suggested are doom metal, so I'm not sure if you're going to like that. However, even if you don't like the music a lot, you can still judge the talent of the vocalists, like in case of my first suggestion (although some call it whiney, which I can understand). And on the bright side, adding my suggestions will increase the variety of this list (like you also did with my list).

Honestly... I think it's better to put the links in the list itself like you already did. It's not THAT bad that they're not clickable, then at least you don't have to scroll down to the comments if you want to check something out. Your call though. Just let me know when you added some (or all) of my suggestions.

Edit: the way you did it now works well by the way (having the links in the description like that).

Finally got around to checking these vocalists out. While I didn't find several of them to be impressive, all of them are quality singers.

There were a few that I'm interested in putting on this list if you can help me find songs which display their full vocal "colours" - the vocalists of 40 Watt Sun, Candlemass, Lake Of Tears, Moonspell, Noekk, and Yearning. Thomas Helm is incredible and I really like that song as well! Ideally the songs would showcase every element of their vocals, as difficult as that sounds...I truly struggled with finding that one song for some of these vocalists :S Let me know if you can get that for me

I should probably note that I'm most impressed when vocalists have a gritty voice in between screaming and clean vocals, something like Russell Allen, so try and find songs which show that if the singer is capable of it. That in addition to clean vocals and growls. Something similar to the Devin Townsend or Spencer Sotelo links I have up.

As for Warrel, I'll probably end up adding him sometime soon; only recently started getting into Nevermore.

This band called devil doll had very unique and strong vocalist. Just give it a chance. I am not sure if you would like them since they were really sth different but the vocal work is totally out of this word.
Also, agalloch and acid bath have (or had) very strong vocalist IMO.

While he has soothing cleans and decent screams, I don't think that John Haughm is particularly talented. However, if you could PM me or post here a link where those other bands' vocalists exhibit the capabilities, then I'd be willing to put them on. I don't know enough about those vocalists let alone the bands to find that particular song.

One of the best lists I've seen on this site. The only people I would suggest are Warrel Dane (who I believe has been mentioned), and perhaps Mario Duplantier of Gojira.

Cheers man, that means a lot to me Which Nevermore track do you think Warrel gives his best performance? If you can get one where he has those gritty lows and those screeching highs that would be great. I've considered adding Mario, since I love his growls and his screams to pitch; you could suggest a track for him as well if you like, but I'm workin' on it

Yeah, you might get more than you bargained for if you had a man-crush on Halford. Still, I'd have him in my list - great metal vocalist. I'd also have Bruce Dickinson and definitely Ronnie James Dio.

Added Dickinson, but I don't know much about Dio's works. Could you help me find some of his best performances?

Edit: Just listened to a sample of the song "Pain", he's incredible!

ok, lets see. here's mayhem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q16ezK19WiA
acid bath: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rMOmaUUbPk . This song features the vocalist clean vocal only (which is really excellent). For his both harsh and clean vocal, check this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlnlK5WL1bk . I'm not much into history of metal but this guy used both clean and harsh vocals simultaneously in early 90s and it makes the album more impressive.
devil doll might be a little long but it worths it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL--7DdHJHY
sorry I don't know how to link the youtube videos to my text

I wouldn't know if you've listened to them that much, but Jason Mendonca (Akercocke) is, in my opinion, by far one of the most talented and versatile vocalists in metal. Definitely needs to be any top metal vocalists list.

I've actually listened to their entire discography with focus on their Words album. I remember he did clean vocals and growls rather well so I might go revisit some of their tracks

Shit man, he's a decent vocalist overall but I found MA's vocals on Watershed straight up annoying at times, he did that throaty rotund black woman on American idol thing and I would say theres definitely some better Opeth albums vocals wise.

I'd say Watershed was the peak of his versatility. Excluding growls, he's gotten even better on Heritage but since there's no growls I put one from Watershed to showcase what he can pull off. As far as I'm aware you're the only one with that opinion

maybe I am the only one with that opinion haha. but that album I don't know to me just had some real annoying stuff on it. I would say Ghost Reveries is probably the best vocal wise, even blackwater park which is largely boring I liked better than Watershed. also he did some good stuff with Bloodbath miles ahead of watershed.

Vocally, Ghost Reveries came close to Watershed imo. I think in this album he displays his highest vocal range in all his albums (barring Heritage), his usual belted growls, and the occasional gritty note a la Symphony X or wtv Ideally there would be a compilation of his work in Bloodbath along with some of the insane clean work he pulls off in Heritage, but such is not the case...Watershed will have to do
