Sometimes, samples can improve the atmosphere of a song just as much as the instruments (or even more). This is a compilationn of some of my favorite samples in metal. I'm trying to keep it one album per band but exceptions are just fine. Oh yeah, I forgot something: I'm not gonna be too specific about where these samples are. It's way more interesting to discover them on your own!
Recommendations are welcome! Just don't get upset if I don't like them. D:
Please write band AND album.

Lamb Of God - Ashes Of The Wake
Buzz*Oven - ...At A Loss
Toxik - Think This
Hell - Human Remains
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Bolt Thrower - Mercenary
The Ruins Of Beverast - Unlock The Shrine, Foulest Semen Of A Sheltered Elite
Agalloch - Faustian Echoes
Alrakis - Alpha Eri
Blacklodge - Solarkult
Abruptum - Potestates Apocalypsis Distant chants, hopeless patriotic songs, scraping iron, the sound of bullets and tanks tearing apart the earth, and the desolate wind that is left after everything is dead.
Agalloch - The Mantle Samples from the classic "The Seventh Seal" and the cult "Fando y Lis". I just love how it turned out to be samples in both swedish and spanish. Made for me!
Brujeria - Raza Odiada Some obligatory non-serious example. The intro is more effective if you are familiar with south american culture and spanish. Tongue in cheek stuff. Don't mess with the satanic narcos!
Dark Lunacy - The Diarist The melancholic russian chants, the sirens, the writing machine, the discourses, the distressing sounds of war and various forms of human suffering certainly give extra power to this concept album about the siege of Leningrad. The children choir at the end is heartbreaking.
11.
Diapsiquir - Virus STN Adding insanity into this satanic trip through shitty streets with the sounds of crying babies, cheerful childhood songs, random vomit here and there.
12.
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone From ridiculous "save your childrens from metal" tv shows to misanthropic comments from a movie(?) which name I can't find.
13.
Esoteric - The Pernicious Enigma Displaying the desperation from one of my favorite movies of all time (Scent of a woman).
Funeral Mist - Salvation Creepy barking dogs, choirs, prayers and music from an old film. if you know the name of the movie (ending of the last song btw), please let me know.
16.
Fungoid Stream - Oceanus These guys basically one-up'd Ahab by making a song around a real whale song.
17.
Gnaw Their Tongues - An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood No list about samples would be complete without an example of Mories brilliant work. I love the insane (and real) interrogation sample. Terrifying.
18.
Godflesh - Streetcleaner While we are already talking about interrogations. Here's another one brought to you by Henry Lee Lucas!
19.
Igorrr - Moisissure Impossible to choose just one from this artist, but if I must... I think I'll go with the altered version of an old 20's song on "Brutal Swing".
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day I never use samples, but when I do... I choose a great one from Shining!
22.
Life Of Agony - River Runs Red A great concept based only on samples scattered throughout the album. A rather frustrating listening from a dysfunctional home.
23.
Lifelover - Pulver Just like Diapsiquir, we get a handful of low-life sounds together with children songs, girls having sex and one of the most cheerful moments at the end fo the album.
24.
Lurker Of Chalice - Lurker Of Chalice Oh my, this is it... Where to start with this one: Distressing crows, a chilling sample from the Omen, and let's not even start with "This Blood Falls As Mortal, Pt. 3"... Simply overwhelming.
25.
Ministry - Rio Grande Blood The manipulated samples from George W. Bush just crack me up every single time.
26.
Murmuüre - Murmuüre Due to the extremely organic feeling of this album. Catching up specific sounds is a hard task but the constant sound of insects will forever stay with you.
27.
Neurosis - Enemy Of The Sun "Are you lost?" "...Yes" A great way to start the album, discussing the feeling of limitless time in our lifes.
28.
Panopticon - Kentucky A call to arms to better working conditions for the miners. Simple words from simple people. Stay together and you will defeat them all!
29.
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times Do you really know what "sorry" means? Because judging by "Forever Failure", Charles Manson doesn't know what it means.
30.
Peste Noire - L'Ordure A L'Etat Pur A big part of the joy I get from this album is from the (mostly) ridiculous samples. Wolves, crazy chickes, silly sword fights, cheesy loading of guns, and what appears to be a porno(?).
Shining - IV - The Eerie Cold The ending with the American Psycho sample is great and all... But the telling of a life backwards in the title track is simply amazing.
33.
The Amenta - n0n The girl talking in "Skin" sounds as hot as she sounds dirty and disturbing... Maybe there's something wrong with me . D:
34.
Theatre Of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear Easily in my top 5 of best samples EVER. These guys really knew how to use the samples from "The Masque of the Red Death" in the song "And When He Falleth". Many bands just put the sample on top without thinking too much about it but here you can hear how the music was written around the dialogue, making the message stronger.
Torsofuck - Erotic Diarrhea Fantasy "Raped By Elephants"... Seriously, there's nothing more to say about this album. Hilarious shit (no pun intended).
37.
Type O Negative - World Coming Down Sinus, Liver, and Lung. Those three interludes display three different ways to die due to a certain addiction. Quite a shivering listen.
38.
Woburn House - Message To Ourselves Outside The Dreaming Machine Post metal band from Germany. The album starts with "River" and sets the mood perfectly with a sample from the movie "Waking Life" with a man discussing the dissapointing state of humanity due to our fear and laziness.
I knew Lurker of Chalice would be here the moment I saw the list name and author
For some reason I really love the sample at the end of this song. I have no idea where it is from but the one who speaks sounds a lot like the actor who plays Galen in the various Babylon 5-related stuffs in which he is in, and I fucking love Galen. The sample itself sounds quite Babylon 5-ish but I don't remember this exact speech happening anywhere.
I'll try to not be very specific in the descriptions... Because I think it's way more interesting to discover them.
Why not? In my opinion it would be far better to also list the songs because to me it's also unclear which samples you're talking about in case of certain albums that I know very well (like The Mantle).
That being said, definitely an interesting and original list. I will try to come up with suggestions, but that isn't very easy for a list like this.

Let's compromise: I'd have no problem commenting them here. But I wont put them up there based on stylistic reasons (I just preffer to comment on the overall feeling so to speak)... Like I said, I think it's way more interesting to discover something on your own than by just knowing the exact place of the sample. Naming the album is enough... Also, some albums have various samples throughout the whole album... Won't waste my time writing the name of all the tracks (Lurker Of Chalice for example has samples in basically half the album).
About The Mantle: the song in particular is "The Hawthorne Passage".

Ah I see. Well, I see what you mean but I can't say I agree. And I did suspect it's The Hawthorne Passage, which you now confirmed.
So by samples you mean, movie samples?
I could also take this to mean samples they the band triggers from a laptop/drum trigger when they play live, that just enhance the overall sound of the album.

If you never wake up from a dream does it become reality?
Fantômas? Was also hoping to see Tool or DJ Shadow... Four more good+ songs come to mind, some of which may be hard to find... Necrophagia (Deathtrip 69), Zirconium (Tranquil Sky (local demo from who knows when)), Cathedral's Hopkins (vid from '95 should be easily accessible) and Benighted (Collapse around 2006). Also Aborted's 2003 vid Meticulous I... though that's probably not substantial enough to put on the list. More of their ilk.. Trepalium (first video), Cephalic Carnage, Carcass/Impaled

Considering the list has movei samples (The Hawthorne Passage f. ex.) as well as "Distant chants, hopeless patriotic songs, scraping iron, the sound of bullets and tanks tearing apart the earth, and the desolate wind that is left after everything is dead." probably I'd say both . I think he just means non-musical effects that enhance the music.

This is basically what I'm going for.
Written by Spirit Molecule on 23.12.2013 at 12:06 I think Rod's talking mostly just metal related releases.
Yes, it must be metal related... Just because otherwise this would be waaaay too long for my tastes. Also, I must dig both the music and the sample itself (hence why I didn't inluce Marcel's recommendation since I loved the American Psycho smaples but hated Krieg's EP).

Quote: The Monolith Deathcult's Trivmvirate
Church of Misery's albums
From Monument To Masses (it's a bit overused though)
Maybeshewill
Recs shall be considered as long as they meet the basic criteria. So sorry, no Maybeshewill... I do agree with you though, those guys are great. I loved their sample of Network (Woburn House used the same as well).
Syk, if you could be extra specific for Trepalium, Cephalic Carnage, Carcass, Tool, Fantomâs, and Impaled (which album?) that would be dandy. You don't need to post the song names though. I like discovering them on my own!

Written by mz on 23.12.2013 at 13:07 How about Aevangelist??
They are a tricky one tbh... I shall revisit their debut because you kind of wonder if the sounds are made by the band if they really took them from somewhere else outside the band if you get my point.
Then again, no point in being so strict (for example, I don't know if the guys from The Amenta asked someone to do the female voice or if it is from somewhere else)... This is just for fun anyways!

Fantômas is the Cordia album from 10 years ago, (&?) maybe the one before that. Um... just to be clear, is this mainly about stuff with more than one [short] sample in a song (like the intros for Kataklysm's album openers (e.g. Shadows & Dust))?

Katatonia's Brave Murder Day has only one sample. That should answer your question. The only critaria for me is:
- It's metal
- I like the sample.
- I like the music.
That's it.

Alright, that's good. Here we go... (possibly Rush 1976's 2112 / Alice Cooper's BDB from '73) Metallica - 1984 RtL. I've always loved FFwF, the siren in "Escape" and the wind in "The Call of Ktulu" (also MoP's laughing outro and the masterpiece tracks 4 & 7 on AJFA in '88) Candlemass - 1986
Carcass - first two or three albums Asphyx - 1991 The Rack Deicide - 1992 Legion Anathema - 1995 The Silent Enigma (potentially also Paradise LostGothic... MDB?)
Cathedral - 1995 (oh - Sabbath? 1970, 1971 intros...) (and for samples at the same time as music, Cathedral '02 closer "Halo of Fire" + "It's All So Real" on 8 Foot Sativa's debut)
Cephalic Carnage - 2000 at the least
(Katakly as mentioned above, all intros from 2000 on. That first one was the longest/most substantial while Epic and Dust may have/be the best) Children Of Bodom? - Follow the Reaper Tool - 2001 Lateralus and I believe track 10 at the minimum on 1996/7's album
Impaled - 2002 Mondo Medicale, perhaps others
Fantomas - 2004, maybe others Maniaca and/or Cryptopsy... at least the former's intro to track 5... along with late appearances for <u>Kekal - all 2005
also if you can find it, the last demo before Altar split up (specifically "God Is a Lie" works great!) in 2007 (more antiChr? Vital Remains, same year)
You may also want to see what's on MS' Videos pages for Disillusion, Brutal Truth, Trepalium and Genghis Tron
And I will be interested to see if anyone talks about Ephel Duath
edit for the 37th time, just a few more: Zao - end of All Else Failed, W.A.S.P.'s 1984 debut, Venom - Prime Evil (wasn't it '89?) and self-titled Queens Of The Stone Age from 2000. Oh, and how could I forget, last track on Immortal's Sons of Northern Darkness, probably the best of the lot! Though that may be just sound effect, as opposed to a sample... a great speech sample does start up Heathen's VoD (1991)
edit for the new year - underlined a handful that just would not be the same w/o th' sample[s] (thanks Rodney) ... ... plus... IM NOTB?!

White Zombie and their cubic buttload of samples

Lamb Of God - Ashes Of The Wake (The sample in title track)
Buzz*Oven - ...At A Loss
Toxik - Think This (The TV samples in between each song)
Hell - Human Remains
Sabaton - The Art Of War (Love those quotes from the actual book itself)
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes (Real Eyes, Real Lies, Realize. That is all.)
