2014: From Professor JokeR's Perspective

I'll start off by saying that I wasn't planning on doing a list so early on in the year, but I've come across numerous albums that I'd like to share with people who enjoy my lists (or people who hate my lists).

This list will be a little different than my 2013 list. I created that list at the end of the year, and then decreased it to my Top 25 of 2013. This list will be a compilation of all 2014 albums I've come across and given a listen.

The rules for the list:
The album was released in 2014 (to the best of my knowledge, or someone else correcting me);
Each album included on the list will receive at minimum one (1) listen;
Albums will receive a grade from the professor ranging from A+ to F-, grading scheme will follow;
Albums can move up and down in grade as I see fit;
The list will have the albums pooled into their respective grade and listed alphabetically within that grade;
My opinion of the genre will be included;
I will include the number of times I have listened to the album in its entirety, generally if it receives a B- and up it will receive numerous spins (remember I said I only need to give it one to grade it).

UPDATE:
The top 10 are now listed in order. The rest remained alphabetical.
Grading scheme:
A+ (95 - 100)
A (90 - 94)
A- (85 - 89)
B+ (80 - 84)
B (75 - 79)
B- (70 - 74)
C+ (65 - 69)
C (60 - 64)
C- (55 - 59)
D+ (50 - 54)
D (45 - 49)
D- (40 - 44)
F+ (35 - 39)
F (30 - 34)
F- (1 - 29)

When an album receives a grade, use common sense with rounding. For example, an album may receive a 9 on metal storm, but an A- (85 - 89) on my list, which would round to a 9.

Please feel free to leave recommendations below if you'd like me to grade an album you are enjoying or love. Do not be butt hurt if I give it an unsatisfactory (in your opinion) grade. Keep in mind the tastes of my list. If you recommend an avant-garde progressive noisecore album I will give it an honest listen. But it may receive a poor grade from my stand point, as that is a genre I most likely wouldn't enjoy. Who knows though, there may be surprises.

Happy listening!

Well, this is a list I can certainly appreciate. Wonder why no one thought to do the classic letter grade rating in the first place?

I also dig the image...

...Even if the Joker is the most overrated Batman villain of all time.

Thanks for the compliment. It'll be constantly updated throughout the year, so hopefully there is other stuff on here you'll enjoy in the future. I thought of it the other day when I was working out, because I wanted to get more coverage than what MS offers. It allows me to grade an album as a 6.5-7 or whatever and still give it a 7, even though I mean for it to be below a 7.

I just googled The Joker and it was one of the top 3 images, I was pretty impressed with it. It's now my wallpaper.

I never did understand why in our grading system it goes from D to F, but there is definitely no E in ours (in Canada). And there is no D- or F+ and F-, it goes D+ D to F. Or at least all of the schools, college and university I went to. I just went with the grade points, because it allowed me more room with my rates.

I like this list a lot - very effective grading system.

The genres are also goods - I can tell by them that I would dislike most of the stuff being posted here - too much "Atmospheric," "Avant Gard" and "Progressive."

In Yugoslavia the rating system went from 1 to 5 with 1 being a failure and 5 being the equivalent of an A.

Thanks for the compliment on the grading system

Well, these are just the albums I've heard so far that are usually within my realm. Plenty more will be added that may engage your tastes. Cheers for looking at the list though!

Nice list. very creative. the only thing i would do different would be to give each album at least 2 full spins before grading. I do realize you would be wasting alot of time on some bad albums instead of seeking out more gems. Anyway, it's not for me to say it's your list. Nice job.

I would suggest ranking them according to their scores. Now it's annoying to find the good stuff because you ranked them alphabetically. Just a suggestion.

Thanks sir. Several of the albums on my list (usually ones that are C- and below) I was barely able to get through. I gave them the full listen (as per my note in the introduction), but even giving them the full listen was generous. I'm comfortable with my musical tastes to know when I like something and when I don't. That's why I'm OK with only giving it one full listen. Rarely do I listen to an album, score it a 5, and then all of a sudden its an 8 or a 9. Usually an album will move up if it was previously at a 7, or down if its at an 8 or a 9. I do appreciate your thoughts though, but like you said I don't really want to spend my time suffering through bad albums.

I thought about this for quite some time before actually putting the list together. I may consider putting it in ranking order once there are more albums and it becomes difficult to locate things. Sometimes when you do that though, albums get forgotten at the bottom of the list that you may think, shit that was actually decent I should give it another spin. I know when I go to someone's list I usually look at the top, meanwhile there may be a gem down below that they didn't like, but I'd actually enjoy. With my current listing, readers can go line by line to see what is good and what isn't. Also, I don't really feel like spending time determine which of the A's I like the best, B+'s and so on. That can be up to the readers / listeners.

I just went through it again for a second time. I'd still give it a pretty good rating (B).

I see what you mean about the production though. Some times it feels like a poorly produced industrial album, or at least that's the impression I sometimes get. Almost..grainy? The melody of the guitars helps guide the album though. The vocals and drums are strong as well.

Mind sharing what you dislike about the grading system? It's not much different than giving a numerical value to the album, just a different way of allocating a score.

Well, first off, I'm not familiar with the grading system because they don't use it where I'm from so I end up scrolling up and down for every album. I know A+ is the highest and F- the lowest, but if you're not familiar with the system it's not as obvious as a simple number. For example, if I see D- I know it's on the negative side, but I have to scroll up to see it's between 40 and 44. Also, since you know how you'd rate these albums in such detail you might as well just put your rating there.
Secondly, if you know what scores you give all these album, I think it's pretty pointless ordering them alphabetically. I order something alphabetically when I don't want to go through the trouble of deciding what I like best and worst. Now it isn't really clear what's at the top and what's at the bottom, which is a pain in the butt seeing as I come to these kinds of lists to be recommended some stuff. It's easier to just see with one glimpse what's at the top and what's at the bottom than to look for the As and Fs. Sounds lazy, but I rarely stay on a list page for very long.
Just my two cents, it's your list I myself am very bad at rating between 1 and 10, let alone 1 and 100, so if I did have those ratings it'd make things easy to rank them accordingly.

Thanks for taking the time to write back to my question. That's fair, I myself still have to scroll up to see what the ratings are from time to time when I'm placing some of the albums in the lower grades haha. I sort of addressed the alphabetical issue with my comment on E.Mols's post. Additionally to that comment, right now I'm just trying to listen to as much as possible rather than tinker with the list and what goes where on it. Of the albums I've selected as A's and A-'s I may have difficulty placing them in an exact order, I just know they're A and A- quality albums.

What I will do for convenience's sake is I will organize alphabetically but by the grading system?A's will be sorted at the top alphabetically, A-'s and so on all the way down.

Thanks I've looked through your list as well, and yeah there are numerous similar releases that we have enjoyed.

I've now organized by letter grade but maintained the alphabetical classification just so I can maintain my sanity over what I think is truly the best, since it fluctuates on a daily basis (this early on in the year anyway).

Let me know what you think of the modification.

The way you had it ordered before was great to me, a nice personal touch with the well thought out approach to rating things. The way you have it now is more likely to be appreciated by readers though. As I've been told by folks in the past, people like to see what you would rate the highest up toward the top of the list, your "cream of the crop" as I recall Mechanist putting it.

I'll be giving The Vita Sound Project a try soon, it sounds intriguing. Do the movie sound clips have anything to do with the album title?

Thanks I've looked through your list as well, and yeah there are numerous similar releases that we have enjoyed.

I've now organized by letter grade but maintained the alphabetical classification just so I can maintain my sanity over what I think is truly the best, since it fluctuates on a daily basis (this early on in the year anyway).

Let me know what you think of the modification.

I definitely prefer it this way it's easier to read this way.
And I know what you mean, I keep changing the ranking in my list. Maybe I should go for the partially alphabetical approach as well.

I quite enjoyed the way I had it previously, but this is certainly easier for people who want to check the list quickly to see what it has. I'm glad I kept the alphabetical within the grades, as to stop from having to constantly update not only its grade but also its place within the rankings. This is still efficient, and easy for the readers.

I'll be giving it another full listen soon, but it was extremely original and different from anything I'd heard in awhile. The music isn't necessarily unique, but how the album is presented is very unique. The movie sound clips are taken directly from the movie I believe. I haven't seen the movie myself, but all of the sound clips have to do with werewolves and the people shifting. It was a very entertaining listen. Let me know if you enjoy it.

Thanks!

Gave your list a thumbs up. Wasn't a big fan of Aenaon and I still haven't heard Major Parkinson, but thumbs up for Hail Spirit Noir, Behemoth and Hannes Grossmann.

thanks, I'm full session Hannes Grossmann and Major Parkinson,
they still have time mounted in my ranking, aenon, there are mainly 4 great musics for me :
-Deathtrip Chronicle (the best for me)
-Grau Diva
-Land Of No Water
-Palindrome
Oi Magoi is almost perfect, there just one music that is below the other for me :
Satyriko Orgio

Recently discovered Mourning Dawn. Labeled "depressive", I am still a little fuzzy on the whole "depressive" tag. Sounds more like doom to me.

I'd say their sound is black / doom indeed. I think the depressive tag has more to do with their lyrical content than anything. The depressive tag is usually put on bands dealing with suicide, self mutilation, etc. Someone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but that is what I've come across.

I guess that makes sense. Because your list isn't overly huge (and I hope it stays that way), the rating system is pretty good (and unusual) as well as all albums having genre-tags, I gave you a +1. I rarely do thumb up year-lists, so you should feel special. But honestly, the biggest reason I +1'd your list is because you now have ordered all of them by grade and then alphabetically, exactly the way how I would do it as well when I'd use a rating system like this one. Like Zaphod says, it's much, much better this way.

Well thank you for the +1

I do agree that this is more user friendly for sure, I just hope the full list still gets looked at in this format. That way people can dodge some stinkers at the bottom as well.

Regarding the length of the list?depending how busy I get with my program I may slow down with adding albums. Right now I'm in tax season for my job, so I have lots of time at work to listen to music while working. Not always new stuff, but it helps me to add albums. That being said, if the list starts getting huge, I may cut off some of the soso to bad albums to cut down if it gets out of control.

Right now I feel like it is a nice little length and still growing.

No problem, I just found it randomly. I really enjoyed that album. I will definitely be giving it many more spins.

Your list is shaping up nicely, although I haven't heard many of the albums on it.

I don't really know if you're into grind but this (awesome) release has enough eccentricity about it to be deemed a worthy venture here, methinks.

I listen to the odd grind album.

I listened to the long you linked, and it piqued my interest, so I went to the bandcamp to listen to the full album. Certainly an interesting listen. I really like the audible bass guitar and eccentricity, as you put it.
