I use this list to have an overview of what albums i have checked out n what i will check out. as it is mostly progressive metal albums, i doubt u will find a similar progressive list that contains all of these bands on the net. n it is good to have at the end of the year when i make my top list. i may tag the bands w what kinda music they play on a later occasion.

Plus 200 of them are not yet rated, which implies you haven't listened to them.

It doesn't necessarily imply that. Most of the time an album requires more than 1 spin in order to rate it. For me at least.

Agreed. I can always judge an album based on 1 listen, however my opinion might change over time, but that doesn't make my initial opinion any less valid

Yeah my ratings can fluctuate a little over time but I find you don't truly know an album until way into the future when you look back on it, so I don't see why rating it from the off on initial impression is an issue.

Actually it does make your initial opinion less valid because your opinion probably changes because you haven't fully grasped it yet, which makes the initial opinion more of an impression and that alone isn't valid enough to judge an album in my opinion. Maybe this isn't true in your case, but in almost all cases it's true for me.

Most albums can be "fully grasped" in one listen.

Attempting to try an album after 1 or even 2 times feels like you're forcing yourself to understand it. Your opinion changing on the album =/= Finally understanding an album, and if it needs 5-10 spins to actually understand it, it's probably not worth understanding anyway.

One time is just enough to get an impression, in my case. In almost all cases my opinion changes after more spins so it's not fair to rate it after one spin. But yeah, it's exactly the same way I judge albums, although 5 spins isn't always required. Some albums even require more than 10 spins for me (Evoken - Quietus being such an album) until I totally grasped it and could judge it properly.

It's a matter of fully grasping an album, which in my view cannot be done in just 1 spin. That is enough to get a good impression of the album. Do you honestly think most reviewers just spin an album once and then write the review? Nope, of course not because they know one spin isn't enough to judge it.

I agree for the most part. I've seen albums jump from a low 8 to a 9 after 5-10 spins, but the initial impression generally doesn't change that radically for me. The increase in understanding with multiple listens generally didn't result in a significantly greater enjoyment of the album.

Do you think film critics watch a film more than once? No, they don't, and a film has more reviewable elements than an album.

The difference is that when I watch a movie, I pretty much give it my full attention. I always combine music with stuff like Facebook and MS (mainly) so I rarely give it my full attention. When it comes to movies I literally always judge them after one view (but my opinion can change after multiple views as well, for the record). The replay value of a movie is far less important as well. Most movies that I've watched I only saw once. In case of music replay value is far more important. If I buy an album, I expect it to spin it multiple times. When I buy a movie I might watch it twice in a few years, or maybe even three times, but more than that is very uncommon.

I don't see why you would bring up movies by the way. I don't think anyone will say "I have to watch this movie about 5 times before I can judge it properly". That would be ludicrous, no-one would say that. In case of music, many people actually say this. You, Alex and Marcel are in the vast minority of people who can apparently "fully grasp" an album in just one spin. But even Marcel once said he spins albums about 5 times (or more) when he has to review an album, so I guess it's just you and Alex.

The fact is most people can tell how they feel about an album after one listen. Those feelings, and hence ratings, are a reflection of that. Not a reflection of familiarity, which is what repeated listens grants. Familiarity has nothing to do with "grasping" an album from the view of personal taste. Reviews require multiple listens to discuss details, not to decide on how much you like it, which for the most part has already been decided subconsciously from the first, good listen.

"You, Alex and Marcel are in the vast minority of people who can apparently "fully grasp" an album in just one spin". Don't come up with generalisations like that Erik. If you paid more attention when you listened to music maybe you wouldn't need five spins to "grasp" an album.

If anything I think over listening to an album skews a score really. One might think an album is better than it is because they know how the songs progress. Perhaps, more rarely, a person may listen to an album so much that they become bored of it and allow that to reflect the score. Whenever I reviewed here my score had been decided on the first listen or two. Further listens were to focus my thoughts on details so I could write something. I don't regret any of my review scores.

Not true for me. I ended up liking some albums after multiple spins when I didn't like them initially. And vice versa as well. You state all this like it's a fact, but it surely is not a fact. You can't say it applies to everyone, because it doesn't.

I only do that for finetuning, revisiting some details ilke 'hell, they stole this riff from so an so'. The 5 spins doesn't affect my initial response to the album.
After the first spin I already rate it aand have most of the review ready.

Erik, your problem is that when you first listen to aa new album you don't give it your full attention. Doing other stuff while listening to a new album is like doing other stuff while watching a movie. No wonder you need multiple listens to grasp an album.

Most people (on MS at least) that I've seen discussing this topic seem to need multiple spins when it comes to judging music properly. Replay value is also important. When I can play an album over and over again and still enjoy it, it's a sign that the replay value, for me, is high. That also influences my opinion on the album.
