Emperor Of Sand follows after Once More 'Round The Sun and The Hunter before it as a mixture of streamlined hard rock and periodic bursts of classic Mastodon fury, with a psychedelic alt-rock haze seeping into a few riffs. As with any Mastodon album, Emperor Of Sand houses some inspired musicianship now and then, especially from Brann Dailor, but in keeping with the band's recent trend, the album centers around less kinetic displays and aims for commercial heaviness.

Their worst yet.

That would be The Hunter for me.

Their worst yet. Pretty disappointed with the whole thing

The Hunter was their bottom for me and I don't see things getting much more dull from there. Is it really?

The Hunter at least had some balls and some semi interesting riffing at times, this album just seems completely void of inspiration. It's a shame because I thought their last album was a totally catchy and all around fun/enjoyable rock album, but this is going in the complete opposite direction quality-wise.

I don't see why people are bashing this, I find it a very good record! A step back to their older style, yet keeping elements from the refreshing Once More Round The Sun. Great riffs as always

Dat's true. The first one minute..., hmm...interesting...then...where are the stoner and progressive parts ? The last song even reminds me of Guns n Roses....hmm...holy shit...

For me it's a slight improvement over the recent two, so would agree with those saying it's their best since CtS.
18 years with a consistent line-up, producing 7 excellent albums. A rare achievement. Let's hope it continues.

I like OMRTS bit this is still better! Super catchy songs and some past elements like some of you said before. Also, there are very elaborated choruses (Andromeda!!!) and production/mixing is awesome. Scorpion Breath, Andromeda and Roots Remain are superb. Even i like Show Yourself

It's.... OK-ish, I guess. But I just know (I think?) Mastodon are capable of doing so much more than just "OK." Considering The Hunter, OMRTS, and now this, I've kinda resigned myself to the fact that we're probably not getting anything even close to the first 4 albums out of them again.

Couple of songs made you captivated for awhile but this will go down as one of the worst record Mastodon ever produced. This is what happens when a band like Mastodon experiment too much with sound ended up devastating the charisma of new record.

I honestly think OMRTS was far more interesting than Blood Mountain to be honest. But this album is definitely their worst so far. I'd say The Hunter is just barely more enjoyable

The first album I bought from these guys was The Hunter, but I think this is far superior (though The Hunter's a good album too)! Jaguar God is an amazing song!

Very overrated band imo. Their debut was pretty good, so was Crack The Skye, but I've never loved them.

EDIT: I have come to love their first 4 records, but everything else absolutely sucks.

I love the reaction to this album:

Once More 'Round the Sun:
"OMG WHY THEY KEEP GOING TO POP ROCK!!1! WHY DON'T YOU PULL ANOTHER CRACKE THE SKYE!!!1 IT SUXXX!"

So they bring back elements of Cracke the Skye.

Emperor of Sand:
"OMG THERE IS NOTHING NEW ABOUT THIS ALBUM, IT'S JUST A REHASH OF THEIR PREVIOUS ALBUMS!!!!111!! IT SUXXX!"

It's impossible to please fans.

Anyway, I think it's a fine album. Not ground breaking by any means, but it's more Mastodon for those who want more Mastodon, and I'm always in the mood for more Mastodon.

This is an album I have learned to love. The problem is, as I see it, that its low points are too low and its high points don't live up to what Mastodon have shown in the past. Still, I think "Sultan's Curse" has some interesting guitar interplays, "Roots Remains" has a funny robotic spoken part, "Ancient Kingdom" has a beautiful, almost epic chorus, "Scorpion Breath" is one the best songs in the album with a kind of dissonant riffs close to the end and, finally, "Jaguar God" might be the best Mastodon song since Crack the Skye, epic and proggy, this is the first song I listened to from Emperor of Sand. But the rest of the album is debatable. One might like the powerful riffs and harmonic choruses in "Word to the Wise," "Clandestiny," and, especially "Andromeda." I might. Or could stand the catchiness in "Show Yourself," "Precious Stones," or "Steambreather." I couldn't. All in all, I think this is a good album. So EoS having a lower rating than The Hunter is too harsh, in my opinion.

PS: "Steambreather" is kind of nice indeed...

Yeah, I love Crack the Skye, and saw them play the album from start to finish in Sydney back in early 2010, but just enjoy The Hunter a bit more. Both cracking albums.

I don't know how you folks concluded in choosing the best Mastodon album. I'm gonna sweat if I have to choose the best Mastodon CD - I fucking can't, except "Emperor Of Sand". Other than this, they have flawless discography.
