This must be the most overrated album in the history of MS! It's early, but over 9 point 2 and it sounds like any other watered out melo-death copy of Insomnium. People here REALLY like melo-death!

It's absolutely true that everything is melodeath or similar takes a too high score on MS.
But this is a very beautiful album (better than everything done by Insomnium, imo), and around 8 is probably its right score.
Not 10, but not even 3.

Good to see someone who doesn't take the melo-death hook, line and sinker and can make a fair judgement upon what they actually hear. The mere fact that this album lacks originality takes it automatically down to an 8. My score of 3 is pretty harsh indeed, I guess it's a combination of being biased, the lack of mentioned originality and blant lyrics. Maybe it will grow on me. Forza Italia!

Shylmagoghnar and Insomnium play a total different kind of melodic death.

Wow .. giving this album a 3, wich i remind that stands for very bad, it's nothing more than trolling, and disrespecting the artists in my opinion.

Not everyone finds the more melodic stuff appealing. We often hear more or less copycats of the old timers. As for Shylmagognhar's new album, the one we are discussing right here: it gave me nothing when listening to it. I felt like it was a weaker version of Wintersun or Insomnium. The guitars seemed like it lacked punch or good ideas and the vocalist failed to excite me. There seem to be no distinctive features. The best example I can give is Niilo from Insomnium, you know it's Niilo from second one. What is the distinctive features of Shylmagoghnar? I actually fail to hear anything distinctive. Feel free to inform me what makes them so special. And of course, this is just my personal opinion.

People often say that melo-death gets a lot of attention on MS, but if you look at the scores, it's not like they are extremely inflated. If you look at the top 100 for Gothenburg metal (which does not include all melo-death of course, but there is no top 100 for those), none score higher than 8.9, and I would say that all that score above 8.5 are generally considered really good albums, no matter if you're a melo-death geek or not. In the death metal top 100, you have some Be'lakor, Insomnium, Amorphis, etc., but it's not like they're all over the place.

Haven't heard this one yet, but I loved their previous CD. And they sound nothing like Insomnium.

Overrated and extremely long album, but putting a "3" as a score is completely out of range and reason.

That commenter also gave Ne Obliviscaris's 'Portal' and 'Urn' each a rating of 4, Mastodon - Crack The Skye - 3, and nearly everything by YOB 9-10.

So there ya go (not that a all these fall in the same genre category).

That's exactly what's wrong with the scoring method. People believe that "their score" is the only score that matters, so they try to make the general score exactly as they believe.
Ex: "I believe x album deserves a 7 but it has a general score of 8.5. Let's give it a 2 so it goes down as closer as possible to the score it deserves (7), Genious!"

I can't tell you exactly what band name means, but what I got from their website is very interesting;

Quote:
Both Shylmagoghnar and Skirge are a combination of vowels that we felt conveyed the essence and atmosphere of our character and music. Nimblkorg is an amalgamation of the name of a monstrous man-beast from literature and runic sounds.

Edit: This is what band replied to me on Facebook, here I quote,

Quote:
It's a combination of syllables which have personal meaning to us. The vocalist picked Ma and Gogh and I picked Shyl and Nar, and we combined them. What it means exactly is a secret which we leave open to the listener to interpret, so it hopefully inspires you!

It's a really good album, especially the haunting and beautiful melodies, but it would benefit greatly from being a bit more concise. 70+ minutes, way too long.

But Amorphis is one of the most (if not the most) overrated bands in MS, specially their later stuff
