Out of all the deathcore releases this year, of course it's the epic bombastic cheesy symphonic one that gets all the attention. And what a hypocrite am I to complain, considering that out of all of those, I'm also only reviewing this one.

Deathcore in the top albums of the year? Imminent 4/10 spam.

Anyway, for those that don't know Shadow of Intent, I can sum up whether or not you will like this album. If you have serious objections to any one of these things, this album is probably not for you:

  • Cheesy symphonic metal with some clear Dimmu Borgir worship (Embracing Nocturnal Damnation)
  • Over-the-top "epic" feel
  • Constant blastbeats and overall heaviness that leaves you exhausted by the end
  • Clean vocals in your death metal
  • Even the slightest hint of a breakdown

If these things don't bother you, give this album a try. They toned down the deathcore part of their sound a lot and are pretty much a symphonic death metal band now with the occasional breakdown.

Yeah, having not listened to these guys before, I'm basically getting Septicflesh/Fleshgod vibes immediately. I like it.

I really don't think the hype for this album was justified. I get that it's basically the power metal equivalent of a brutal death metal album and therefore bound to appeal to a wider audience, but the cheese factor is overwhelming throughout and the incredibly thin "clean" vocals detract from what little intensity exists between all the bombastic Septicflesh worship.

I think mid-era Fleshgod Apocalypse perfected the combination of orchestral instrumentation and brutal death metal, but I can appreciate others being inspired by the entrepreneurial nature of innovators before them. It's not like something original is always the best in its class; however, in this case, I'd argue the originators have the advantage.

It's well-executed and constructed to fit the typical formulaic structure of "pop" metal -- a major metal label's wet dream (think Metal Blade) -- but unfortunately lacks the substance needed beyond its pleasurable, easy listening experience for the battle-tested veteran looking for something with a sturdy foundational grit. Which is to say, it's passable, but far from great. The worst part about it is you can tell the musicians are individually talented and their vision is clearly paying off in terms of garnering attention across all sects of the metal scene, but the overall approach is muddled by what seems to be a gimmick or specifically designed attempt at breaking through to the heavyweight ranks of mainstream metal. I understand all forms of art are in some way or another derivative, but that doesn't mean it has to be made so blatantly obvious.

I have to agree that it's definitely not for everyone, and that it is a little overrated. Im actually surprised that of all the fantastic deathcore albums that have come out in the past 2-3 years, it's this album that gets the attention, considering it's so outright cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love the album, but I also love all sorts of cheesy stuff and it's already been established that I have a terrible taste in music. Even then, I would say that Whitechapel's latest album is a much more distinct deathcore album of the year for me.

Pompous but doesn't lack essence. Best track: The dreaded mystic abyss.

I agree. With both of your sentences.
I should normally puke with this but I strangely like it.

Too epic, cheesy, senseless and silly - but yet you're rating this album 9/10 = excellent?

Your understanding of the rating system is terribly wrong and outright absurd.

Sure, but did you even understand Overrwatcher's post?
He obviously likes the album pretty much. So if you are trying to express that you are sharing his point of view, any form of sarcasm is off the mark and nothing but a source of misunderstanding.

One of my favorite albums of the last few years was the one before this, "Reclaimer." I love this band but this one wasn't quite as consistent as their last. The presence of "singing" in this one is a detriment

Not my cup of tea especially the vocals but still liked the melody part of two songs - Melancholy and Oudenophobia.

I really don't get the hype about this album at all. This sound really average with a killer instrumental track. The vocals are pretty good though.

Ok, time to check this polarising album out.

Verdict:
Having never listened to Shadow of Intent before today or really taken much notice of the hype around this album, I actually quite like it. I'm not a big deathcore band, but these guys know how to add variety to a very formulaic genre.

Not my favourite album of 2019 by any means, but certainly not worth less than 7 or 8.

(Also, how can 191 votes in 7 months be classed as "overhyped"?)

I've come back to this album far more regularly than I anticipated; admittedly that's a listen once every 2-3 months or so, but it's more than most albums from 2019 have been allowed

The over-the-top cheesiness and Dimmu worship doesn't phase me in the slightest. I absolutely love this thing and think it's worthy of all the praise it gets.

This has been playing a lot for me ever since I've discovered it, both the instrumental version and the original version. Tried to get into the earlier stuff but a couple of songs in I was already tired of the breakdowns. This is more symphonic death and I like it better this way. The singles from the new album all sounds great and I can't wait for Elegy.

A little monotonous for my taste (same as most deathcore) but the symphonies are pretty good as well as the atmosphere and guitarwork. Breakdowns are not bad, they've avoided the standard cringe deathcore style.

Edit: It's a grower... those clean vocals though? Sounds like Sum 41 on steroids.
