Mike Cross, a founding guitarist for American rock act SPONGE, has died at the age of 57. No cause of death has yet been revealed.

Former QUIET RIOT singer and "American Idol" finalist James Durbin has joined forces with STRYPER members Robert Sweet and Perry Richardson (bass; also ex-FIREHOUSE) and RIOT guitarist Mike Flyntz in a new project called CLEANBREAK. The band's debut single and video will be released next month via Frontiers Music Srl.

Long-running U.K. rockers The Quireboys have parted ways with lead singer Spike (real name Jonathan Gray). The band will continue as a five-piece, with longtime guitarist Guy Griffin handling the vocals.

A new supergroup has been formed by members of Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam called 3rd Secret.

The band is comprised of Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and Soundgarden/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, as well as Void guitarist Bubba Dupree and vocalists Jennifer Johnson and Jillian Raye. The latter musician is Novoselic's bandmate in Giants In The Trees, while Dupree already plays with Cameron in the alt-metal group Hater.
