No surprise to see At The Heart Of Winter here, I actually expected it to be number one, IX Equilibrium is the only album by Emperor I haven't yet listened to

I'm happy to see Beyond The Veil high in the list, it deserves to be

I personally would of added Lake Of Tears - Forever Autumn, and Summoning - Stronghold, but still this is a good list, 1999 is one of my favourite years in metal

I see contradicting dates, it seems it was released in 1998 in Germany.
Discogs sets it in 1998.
progarchives says 1999 and then in notes about the release say 1998.

You know what, I didn’t think I’d like it (because... Prog) but I just listened to “Sun Of The Night” and I actually really dug it. Reminded me of Diabolical Masquerade’s Nightwork from my previous list but switch the Black Metal for Death Metal and the horror vibe for a sci fi one. I will try to finish the rest of the album when I get a chance. Cheers.

Reminded me of Diabolical Masquerade’s Nightwork from my previous list but switch the Black Metal for Death Metal and the horror vibe for a sci fi one. Believe it or not, I originally didn’t like At The Heart Of Winter... I loved Battles and thought this one was overhyped and sounded like a whole album of Bathory’s Enter The Eternal Fire because I was a really dumb kid. It’s still not my favourite Immortal album but I have grown to understand what’s so great about it.
I honestly didn’t know what to put on top, IX Equilibrium is underrated imo just because it seems to the least talked about Emperor album. I think it’s on a similar level as the others.

Beyond The Veil might be imo the quintessential Gothic Metal album.

Thank you, I plan to dive into Summoning’s discography in the future but atm I still haven’t heard anything from them. Yeah 99 was better than I thought it would be, the 90’s really don’t deserve the bad rap they get - every year I found great Metal albums.

I’m not saying I dislike everything in the genre (Opeth was my gateway into Extreme Metal) but for everything I love there’s something I hate or so it seems so it’s the genre I approach with the most caution. I guess you could say I have simple tastes?

Yeah, Moontower is great!

One of my favorites from 99 is the criminally overlooked Balsyn by Potentiam. Absolute favorite from that year has to be Still Life though

You don't seem to really be a prog fan so I'll get Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Control Denied and Opeth out of the way already, but on the black metal side of things you've got fantstic releases by Windir, Paysage d'Hiver and Summoning, while on the avantgarde front Carnival In Coal released two excellent albums this year in addition to Solefald and Fleurety, and even death metal got some neat stuff with Arch Enemy and Litham.

Prog and I have a complicated relationship
Opeth is responsible for opening the gates of Extreme Metal to me with Ghost Reveries, Deliverance and Blackwater Park but I feel like I’ve had my fill of them if that makes sense so I never bothered listening to earlier or later albums.
That’s not to say no Progressive bands turn up in my favs, there are Prog albums that are all-timers for me but the genre itself doesn’t appeal to me.
But then I like Nu Metal so what the fuck do I know?

But thanks for your suggestions, Summoning is one in particular I’ve been intending to dive into.
