All the songs are enjoyable, but overall the album doesn't reach the fresh doom 'n' roll sound of the debut or the crushing Lovecraftian doom of their third release.

My favorite songs here are probably "Mother Superior", "Cursed Priestess", "Cursed Be Thy Name", and "Homunculus", although, like I said, they're all pretty fun

"Cursed Priestess" is one hell of a trip - you really need to listen to it all the way through:
It starts off slow with tension slowly building (00:46), then a creepy instrumental (2:59) leads up to an ultimate devastating part with eerie vocals (4:05), and then finally comes in with a super catchy, groovy ending (4:44)

"One touch and you fall away
A helpless fool drawn into her fire
She is love and she is hate
Cursed Priestess brings you death
That you desire!"

Thank you, that was great.

They even throw in an "Alright now!" (1:18) if the influence was unclear.

Continuing the heavy/doom legacy with pride

Glad you enjoyed it. Make sure to check out their other two albums - they're even better in my opinion!

Enjoy

I relistened to this yesterday due to your comments, and what a fantastic doom album it is! With the exception of "Sacrifice", which is just good, the rest is superb. "The Mountains Of Madness" and "Cursed Priestess" are otherwordly.

"The Mountains Of Madness" is one of their softest songs. I was kind of disappointed when I first heard it because I was used to their crushing heavy stuff and the lyrics didn't really use all of the potential of Lovecraft's story in my opinion. But listening to it again, it's also really good with an especially nice solo near the end.

By the way, have you read Lovecraft's "At The Mountains Of Madness"?

No. I am afraid I haven't read that much Lovecraft. I've been meaning to for years now though.

No. I am afraid I haven't read that much Lovecraft. I've been meaning to for years now though.

Inspired by this band, I've recently started reading his stuff. Not a lot, I'll admit, but so far I've read:
- "The Call Of Cthulhu" (really awesome, suspenseful, mysterious, and not overly long)
- "Dagon" (short and snappy read)
- "At The Mountains Of Madness" (a phenomenal epic about researchers going to Antarctica and finding theyre maybe not alone out there... It's a pretty long "short" story, but worth it. You need patience in the beginning, but after that it gets super gripping)
- "The Colour Out Of Space" (a rural horror story - I wasn't really a fan of it, but you might like it)

Overall he's the author who has the highest vocabulary and diction that I've ever read, but he uses that language very skillfully and cleverly. And he is the absolute master of suspense. You can read his stuff here online for free:

I'd have to add "The Whisperer In The Darkness", probably my favorite of the bunch.

Wow. This album - this band - keeps getting better with each listen. "The Necromancer" starts off fairly standard, but slowly becomes more mellow and emotional (the protagonist almost sounds sad as he tells of rising to power and destroying his enemies with his "hooded acolytes"), underlined with alternating sweet melodies and heavy riffs - and then finishes off with some groovy guitar-work.
