Usually I'm all for bashing Slayer because, of Tom Araya's religious background however, I did take the chance and check out World Painted Blood which initially I wasn't too sure what to think but, it actually started to grow on me. I've been doing this whole getting in touch with my metal roots so, I've been on a big Pantera, White Zombie, Sepultura (Max era) and Slayer phase, just revisiting some of the stuff I use to listen to in the mid 90's. I may not agree with Araya's religious disposition but, he's still a great vocalist and of course, King is a hell of a guitarist. While the lyrics in WPB are rather cliche and often follow a typical rhyme scheme, there are some pretty good tracks on it, and I was prompted to revisit some of their old work, as well as some more recent albums. I've never cared for Christ Illusions but, I still retain the thought that God Hates Us All is one of their best releases to date and, Undisputed Attitude is a classic (damn great cover songs). I wouldn't start attending Slayer shows again, already done that enough times to know what a Slayer show is like. I actually didn't know what the hell Death Magnetic was and had to look it up - Metallica is one band I'll continue to keep my distance very far, far away from.

I think Slayer have become pretty disgusting. I remember this one video where Kerry King is being showed some cd's and asked to to give his opinion on these albums (I think it was some stupid US tv show) and the guy throws a copy of Morbid Tales to the floor, while talking how Nirvana and Slipknot are really cool. I mean, I understand that they've been huge for more than two decades but I seriously hate this kind of wannabe-rockstar attitude from people whose (however distant) roots are in underground metal (or any other underground culture). It's like pissing in your own face, or pissing in the face of who you used to be. EDIT: King turning his nose up towards early Celtic Frost is also kind of funny, given that early CF were conceptually way less lowbrow than early Slayer.

World Painted Blood was decent, but not too good. Everything up to Seasons is great. Then some stuff from Divine Intervention, God Hates Us All and Christ Illusion. I hated Diabolus in Musica, although I guess "Wicked" was kind of good...

29.05.2010 - 16:40 Written by vezzy on 29.05.2010 at 15:58 Funnily enough, "Wicked" along with "Screaming From The Sky" are the only two songs I really dislike on "Diabolus In Musica". I actually think its a very underrated album. As for "World Painted Blood", I think it is good, despite the horrid production. Even though I do think that "Christ Illusion" was overall a better and more consistent album. Of course, I agree with the pretty unanimous opinion that everything up to, and including "Seasons In The Abyss" is classic stuff. Although in saying that, I dont think Slayer have ever released a bad album, as every album they have put out have included some great songs. "Divine Intervention" particularly is horribly underrated IMO.

Haunting the Chapel is probably the most underappreciated Slayer release, and one of the best. Divine Intervention is okay, but it has some songs that are good... like SS-3, 213 and Killing Fields. I don't know why, but Tom's vocals on Killing Fields (esp. "the choice is made of free will, just like the choice to kill") sound a bit intimidating, which sets a good atmosphere.

Apparently what actually happened, was Tom was looking for somewhere to pee while on Venom's tour bus, and asked where the loo was. Cronos told him to pee in his mouth, so Tom took him at his word, and peed on him. Cronos then punched Tom in the face. lol

Hey, does anyone know if the "Dragonslayer" rumors are true? There really isn't much evidence and Slayer deny its existence (either because it's true, or not to look bad).

What happened was... when asked what their name was (I think, it was even before Show No Mercy) by some journalist, Kerry King said "we're called Slayer as in Dragonslayer" Dragonslayer was huge movie at the time. There is a video somewhere where Kerry King says that http://www.faceculture.tv/index.php?cnti_key=11735216

I'm sure that if Slayer had become known as Dragonslayer in the 80's, no one would ever have had anything against that name No one laughs at Whitesnake, Rainbow, or Black Sabbath, all of which are at least on the same level of cheesiness.

Yeah, but I doubt they would've kept "Dragonslayer" if they were to focus on their iconic sound and lyrics.

Wow today i listened to sepulturas "schizophrenia" and check the first riff of the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUdFMV7yqYA . then compare it with "world painted blood's" first riff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFw9l_TFokU . they sound very similar...

10.11.2010 - 23:42 Written by K✞ulu on 10.11.2010 at 23:10 yeah it does. i didnt say that slayer stole the riff but that they sound similar. i am not a guitarist to know exactly what strings the left hand plays but i can easily understand that the right hand does on both occasions almost the same thing. generally the first riff of world painted blood is very fucking common. i keep on listening to songs and after some riffs i say "now should the slayer riff been played as continuance". another example is the first riff (not the intro-melody) of kreator's "demon prince". after that riff i want the verse of "world painted blood" to be played. hahaha!

Watching Slayer's performance in Sofia from the Big Four DVD, and I have to say that's one band to see live. I think they are much more enjoyable live. While I am not a big fan, I would definitely go to see them. Plus, I just realized: their guitar tone makes them truly unique. And by the way Hanneman's banshee-like lead work blows my mind.

They are very intense live, and the first time I seen them I very nearly had to be hospitalised for exhaustion! lol

28.11.2010 - 21:54 Written by Angelic Storm on 28.11.2010 at 20:51 Hospitalized... well, I guess they really make you literally "thrash to death." I haven't watched Anthrax's performance at that show as I am not a fan, and I have to say that Slayer sounded the tightest of the other three. Really. Great performance in all respects: vocals, guitars, drums, (bass is almost never audible), the overall sound.

But I was very close to it, Im surprised I didnt collapse at the end, because that's what I felt was going to happen. I clearly remember the last song was "Chemical Warfare", which would have drained a lot of people even if it had been earlier in the set. lol Ive actually heard a few people who arent really Slayer fans saying they are awesome live. Its probably the intensity of it, which is impossible to ignore. xD

I've seen each of the "big four" live and I have to say that I always enjoyed Slayer more than the others. I saw Metallica once (in 1989), Anthrax twice, Megadeth twice and Slayer 9 times. I personally don't give a crap what religion any of them are. The music for me is still excellent. They aren't that technical and their recent output isn't the best work they've ever done, but overall I find them to be a great band. To me...they are what rage sounds like.

Imho...they really do deliver live. Every Slayer show I've been to has been excellent. Even though they're getting older, they still put out an aggressive energy that feeds the crowd. And that's another thing...at every Slayer show I've been to the whole crowd seems to be into it. I've never seen those guys who are "too cool" to enjoy it and stand around with their arms crossed. Man, part of what makes a live show great is the crowd's reaction. I really hope their age doesn't fuck with their live performances for a while longer. I'd like to see them play a few more shows.
