Lungs - 10" http://www.reverbnation.com/lungsmusica The Minnesota, USA based riff-factory, Lungs have a 10" out and a couple songs up on their Reverbnation page - Do yourself a favor. If you like the post-meets-sludge stuff that is spawning from all over the globe, this is right up your alley. On "Sermon On The Plain" and "The Pith", Lungs showcase the ability to produce piledriving riffs and counter the mood up with those mellow, clean sections that lull the listener before aural battery resumes. Fun fact, the lungs for Lungs come from behind their kit... their drummer is the singer. Zomg! by BitterCOld |
Defecto - Defecto EP http://www.reverbnation.com/defectoband Defecto have some punchy material in this new 6 track EP. Think along the lines of a fusion between more modern thrash efforts from big names such as Testament and the edgy symphonic/progressive sound of Symphony X's latest releases and you're not too far from what these guys are aiming for. While sometimes straying into the derivative it does deliver some high quality material with pristine production that is very accessible and gives you instant satisfaction. With excellent replay value this is a nice showcase of a very talented band on the rise. by R'Vannith |
Hosoi Bros - Wine Witch http://hosoibros.bandcamp.com/ Hot damn! Punk and stoner?! Hell yes! You know what that means; succinct song writing, chock full of catchy riffs that just roll like a motherfucker, performed at high-speed in a stripped down, no gimmicks fashion. If Barn Burner gets your dick hard, then Hosoi Bros will probably cause erection-related heart failure. Too bad this release is only a 2 song 7", which is frankly 50 songs too short. by Doc Godin |
The Almighty Excruciating Pain - E.P.E.P. http://thealmightyexcruciatingpain.bandcamp.com/album/e-p-e-p As outlandish and over-the-top as everything on the cover of this thing is (the pic, the band logo, etc.), it's still got a tongue-in-cheek, self-mocking aspect to it that, in a world where Manowar and Hunter Hendrix's manifestos regrettably exist, is pretty fucking refreshing on a metal disc. So a kudos or two is in order. Plus, thrashy tech death sweetened by extra melody that isn't writing-riffs-on-a-graphing-calculator-then-having-Jared-Loughner-clip-lyrics-from-old-issues-of-Scientific-American-and-Foucault-books kind of incoherent and pretentious? Count me in. by wormdrink414 |
Silence Of The Old Man - Carencia De Ausencia http://silenceoftheoldman.bandcamp.com/ I didn't think the "blackgaze movement" would reach South America so soon but here I am listening to the debut EP of the Chilean one-man band Silence Of The Old Man. Fortunately, Neige isn't around Chile so this doesn't have too much of that French sound you are so used to hearing. This brand of blackgaze is actually very raw, especially the vocals which could be a turn off to some people but it does suit the music and at least it isn't *another* angelic voice. Many post-rock ideas make their way tastefully through the music? In fact, the moments this project shines the most are when those influences are at their peak. Good examples of that and also the highlights of the EP are the beautiful instrumental "El Silencio De Los Lamentos", the piercing "Ausencia" and the ending of "Tiempo De Miseria" with inspiring acoustic guitars giving it a nice folk touch, bringing homesickness to yours truly. by Mr Doctor |
Dimaeon - Exit Reality http://www.dimaeon.com http://dimaeon.bandcamp.com/ Some bands have the extraordinary ability to translate emotions into music, giving it meaning. An album or EP doesn't have to be just a musical exercise. This band shines most when the amplifiers' volume is turned down and the music is at its bare minimum, stripped down and vulnerable. Dimaeon have the death metal and progressive metal tradition in their DNA, and also, to a lesser extent but it's still present, drink influences from doom. These songs are then opportunities to wear different musical skins and this allows them to showcase a heavy side layered with somber growls, which then turns into a journey through mellow foundations, rich in melodies and with an abundance of great-sounding, emotion-pouring solos. This multiplicity of possibilities found in Exit Reality brings forth many surprises, like complementary keyboards, and a sense of diversity which is well-measured. This is a band who knows how to draw attention to their biggest strengths, which are the ethereal quality of their songs and their melodic climaxes. by BloodTears |
