3 Inches Of Blood At The Warehouse - 16.09.09 (Calgary, Canada) by Doc G. (12) |
After a 4 month hiatus from concerts, I have returned to Calgary's quaint, little sleazy piss-hole known as "The Warehouse" to find fresh faces and a rejuvenated sense of excitement towards concerts again, and discovered I made an extremely wise choice for my return.
Baikal
As per most shows at The Warehouse club, the opening act for the night was local. It was to be the experimental/progressive/ambient/instrumental Baikal (not to be confused with Baïkal - from France). The set was performed really well, detailed intricate guitar work played with astonishing accuracy without lacking in ambiance or more expressive appeal. Admittedly I did look at my non-existent watch a number of times throughout the set though, judging by the crowd I wasn't the only one. Perhaps it was the energy (or lack thereof) from younger demographic in the audience that just didn't understand this music or the band was out of place warming up the stage for 3 Inches Of Blood, but something just wasn't clicking. My theory is simply that when preparing yourself for a straight-forward heavy metal attack, the more experimental stuff can get a little tedious. The music certainly wasn't bad, and I definitely would check this band out again, but only under different circumstances. The crowd was polite and receptive, but nothing more.
3 Inches Of Blood
Before the stage crew even managed to finish setting things up, feet were already pounding and the chants already starting "We want blood! We want blood!". The house lights went down and those unforgettable few seconds from Mussorgsky's "A Night On Bald Mountain" came on to build up some tension before the band rushed out immediately jumping into the brand-new "Battles And Brotherhood". It was astonishing how many new tracks were thrown into the setlist - exactly half of the regular set (not including encores) were from the brand new album. What was even more surprising is how well they went over without a disappointed person in the house - which is saying a lot considering 80% of the club was ass-to-gut. Without surprise they seemed to avoid the first album entirely and chose an interesting assortment of tracks from Fire Up The Blades and Advance And Vanquish (including a personal favourite "Assassins Of the Light"). After breezing through a short 12 song set the band said goodnight, only to come back on for 3 encores - a Blue Oyster Cult cover of "Cities On Flame", followed by their 2 biggest hits - "Deadly Sinners" and "Trial Of Champions" to end the night off with a bang. Despite the fact that this will stick in my memory as the best performance I've seen from them to date, the whole show seemed a little contained. The band played what felt like a short set, played on a stage that seemed a little too small for them, and finished the show at the un-metal, parent-pleasing hour of 10:45 and it was done. It was a solid show, but nothing terribly mind-blowing.
