Because everyone else is doing it... BitterCOld's top 100.

Seeing as all the cool kids are doing it, and seeing as your tears sustain me, I present my list of the Top 100 metal albums of the decade. At least i'm different and my list is in descending order to heighten the suspense.

Preface:

First of all, this list is a snapshot of my top 100 albums as of the time of compilation and posting. It could very well fluctuate with some albums moving up or down several notches within half an hour of my posting. I ranked these based upon my own MS ratings, which means it is highly likely I missed an album or five because we don't have the band listed, or I heard/liked an album and somehow failed to rank it.

Additionally, I left off EP releases (sorry, Jesu, Procession, Deathspell Omega), as well as works of artists that were formerly metal or I consider outside of metal, i.e. OM, Clutch, Mogwai and all of Ulver's works this decade.

This list pretty much exposes what I have already known about myself? While I own a lot of CDs, a good chunk of them are from artists I really like. Why take a gamble from Band A when I know I like what Band B does? So a couple bands have a handful of releases in this list, so rather than 94 different artists in 100 slots, there's a lot of the same name repeated ad nauseum. Bully for them. They deserve it in my bitter opinion, and this is my blog and my list, so that's really the only opinion that matters.

(Finally, if you're big into power metal, you can save yourself some time, skip to the end of the list, and start whining that I failed to include Band C's "awesome:banger:" release. )

Strange that there is no love for Anaal Nathrakh in any of the lists published so far but mine (and I rated it very high).

7. Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale

That surprised me a little bit because judging by your blog from 2008's albums I thought you would put it in the best three of the decade... The Manical Vale could have tyaken Primordial's place

I still don't see what's good with that band

Emotions, I guess. Alan has a very soulfoul singing, just listen again to As Rome Burns, or to The Coffin Ships.

Interesting... I thought that his vocals sucked

I love subjectivity.

Well, I can't say he sings well, technically speaking. Indeed it's sometimes a bit false I think. But whatever, as the emotions outweight the rest by far for me

But then again 90% of all metal vocalists suck. Just listen to Electric Wizard or Cathedral's vocals, they are as sucky as they come, but does that make them bad hell no, at least it gives soemthing unique to the music. And like Momo said Alan's emotions outweigh his lack in technical ability by far...

Of course that those bands have terrible vocals but they add to the music.
My problem is that the Alan's vocals don't add shit to the music...
It was just a "what the hell is that? Why?"-Moment when I listened to them.

Esoteric's Maniacal Vale represents a quandary. it's up there with Streetcleaner as perhaps the most overwhelming and crushing release i've laid ears upon. but that and that alone won't necessarily make it my favorite album (neither are. if/when i put up a top 100, Ulver's Bergtatt will have the top spot)...

the list is partially based on how often i have listened to those and how much they still succeed in drawing me in. if my randomized pc decides that amongst 8,000 songs or so, it feels like selecting a Warning track, i'll often find myself adjusting the playlist and just playing the entire album straight.

Primordial, as with Warning, i dig because of the emotions in the vocals... amongst other things. I also like how that album sort of picks up in intensity as it goes along. it seems like the harshest tracks are the last.

I noticed alot of Enslaved throughout your list. As far Viking Influened metal goes who are some of your favorite bands? I'm a huge fan of Amon Amarth. Also, any chance of an updated list?
