With Animus Herilis don't expect anything else than a pure old school Black Metal, this is the "trend" (if I can use this word) in France nowadays. A lot of our bands choose to play classic "Old School" Black Metal and all those productions are in general really good. Too bad that a lot of people out of France don't understand it and miss this kind of albums?

Animus Herilis is not a newcomer, they've actually started to play Black Metal in 1993 but "Recipere Ferum" is only their first album. Don't expect any form of "new" black metal here, with Animus Herilis we don't have Keyboards or melodic choruses but only aggressive music produced by the classic Metal instruments, guitars, bass and drums.

The result is really classic not really new but at least when you and only want to listen to a good "old school" Black Metal album you cannot be disappointed. All the good ingredients of a good recipe are in the album, the lyrics (in French) are nicely written the melodies (even if it is a bit monotonous for me sometime) are effective and in general the musicians of the band seem to be good. Even the production sound "old school", understand with a really minimalist sound (that a lot of BM lovers enjoy). This album is ok and my only regret is that it is really classic and it's not so hard to find others albums in the vein of this one.

Note finally that their lyrics are clearly oriented against any forms of religion. If I have nothing against this kind of topic (at the opposite?) it's funny to see that a lot of Black Metal bands seem to only have problems with religion. I'm not here to judge anyone or to open any debate but I think that is a bit cliché at the end and not so helpful for a band (but at least with Animus Herilis this is not Satanism and that's already a good thing?)

This is a promising first album and I hope that Animus Herilis will be able to confirm all their potentiality later with something a bit more personal. However in the style and if you're looking for this kind of classic Black Metal, you should have a look on this release, it's ok and you won't be disappointed.
