Well, I see that you are Tristania fanboy (just joking I also like them. Gothic stuff that is here is quite good and essential, perhaps more doom metal would be recommended for such list, maybe Warning, Morgion, Mourning Beloveth, Esoteric, Saturnus, more My Dying Bride (it's so essential band in the genre) There is more like Officium Triste, their music, especially on "Reason" is heart-breaking like Katatonia first album

I really need to start listening to more doom, it's a genre I never really appreciated until recently, I used to find the genre a bit too slow and dreary, but I'm starting to like it a bit more now.

I've listened to a few songs by Saturnus and really liked what I've heard, I will start listening through some of their whole albums, and also the other bands you mentioned

So which bands to you think are progressive in your list?
(other than Opeth obviously)

I thought the two primary purposes for the internet were cat memes and overreactions.

I've decided I'm going to take Opeth off this list and create a separate list for progressive metal albums, I think it's better to just stick with Gothic and Doom for this list.

I thought the same here "Progressive" is very broad term, like progressive death, progressive thrash, heavy, etc.

Quote:

Sometimes you should be in the mood for such music to appreciate it more. You know, melancholy, etc.
Then "technical" things like tempo dosen't matter so much then because you embrace the spirit of this music, emotions, etc. Usually you doesn't listen such music for riffs, but for emotions that it evokes in you. At least for me it's like that, especially with some bands. When you can feel more such emotions, you can like it more.
I have the same with black metal often. Emperor "Anthems" is the energy of longing, something more existential/spiritual than emotional. You can hear that in their lyrics.
For example now, I don't feel such emotions so I can't aprreciate it. There is time for everything. I listened more heav/thrash metal recently.

Of course, still, you can appreciate technical things, musicality, riffs, solos, etc. But to go deeper, to make it more personal, especially with specific music, with some bands, something like that is necessary. This is why some genres are not veryone. like for example funeral doom.

it's not that "progressive" is a broad term, it's that any genre can become progressive, multiple time changes, going beyond the verse-chorus-verse pattern, atmosphere, experimentation can go into any genre.

Yeah, this is what I wanted to say exactly. It's beyond genres like avantgarde.

Your absolutely right about that, for me it's Opeth, I either find them very boring or mesmerising, all depending on the mood I am in at the time.

The one band that has always captured my emotions the most is Summoning, no matter how many times I go back to listening to them, I always get caught in a moment, where my imagination takes over and I find myself feeling like I'm in a fantasy world, obviously it helps the fact that I'm a Tolkien fan
