Mighty Heavy Metal Albums

Some time ago I made a list for heavy metal albums I enjoyed the most. I got it cleaned up after ripening my tastes.I also tried to organize the list a bit, in subcategories. There is one album per band (choices were hard sometimes), with no strict order, but my favorite albums are usualy on top.

2020 EDIT:
I like heavy metal with atmoshpere, with melody, and ideally it should be some kind of gate to a fantastic universe. I don't care about modern HM with a shiny production and simplistic riffs. I don't care obscure occult band with horrendous prod and no musical ideas. Here's the list of what I consider classics of the genre, pinnacle of dreamy, groovy, beautiful and well composed oldschool heavy metal

1.Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny
2.
3.Angra - Angels Cry
4.
5.Fates Warning - No Exit

A Chronology Of Masterpieces

What seems the most important albums for me in chronological order.
I wish I could carry the list year after year to see how my tastes changed and new findings.
I can help but notice that old albums immediately strike me, while in recent times most albums are good but nothing is groundbreaking. We have a tide of releases in the last decades, and standing above the other requires an impossible lot of talent.
Or is it my listen habbits that changed ? I felts I listened to the old albums albums for a lifetime while I'm only surface checking the new ones. Too little time, too little time to truly live...
Also the mixing technology, the sound is too flat nowadays and lack impact and personnality

1.Frank Zappa - Freak Out
2.The Who - Tommy
3.Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat
4.Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
5.King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King

2019 Under My Scope

In 2018 I decided to listen to as many albums as possible, and succeeded in finding new interesting stuff. But it took much effort, and in the end I think I wasn't really smart in my choices, so this year I'll try to do the same with higher creteria. Hopefully the list will grow without losing tightness like it did back then. I'm watching every new entry to MS database, and these are the few albums which caught my attention. - I mean, I'm pretty jaded so these are the only releases I've been able to sit through without complaining.

1.Sabbath Assembly - A Letter Of Red
2.Helium Horse Fly - Hollowed
3.Lingua Ignota - Caligula
4.Health - Vol.4 :: Slaves Of Fear
5.Bent Knee - You Know What They Mean

Death Metal I enjoy the most

Here's a little list displaying my personal favorite death metal albums, based on the same idea as my heavy metal list, thus stressing the raw and the genuine. For me death metal has to be crushing, then coloured with atmosphere. Some of my choices may seem exotic, considering the list overall, but it's what broadens it. Rules : one album per band, the order isn't strict (still bottom albums are weaker than their predecessors). Many good tbdm bands are lacking, mostly because of their unfitting sound. If you think some kick-ass piece are missing, don't hesitate to suggest them. Enjoy.

1.Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious
2.Suffocation - Pierced From Within
3.Cynic - Focus
4.Septicflesh - Εσοπτρον
5.Death - Symbolic

Favorite KISS Songs

Time ago someone asked in the shoutbox: "what's the best KISS song?". This question had me scratching my head. I didn't really remember KISS, even though it was one of the very first bands I ever listened too, when I my appetite for music started ten years ago. So I decided to check the whole band's discography.

1.KISS - Destroyer
2.KISS - Kiss
3.Death - Human
4.KISS - Creatures Of The Night
5.KISS - Crazy Nights

Club: Technical/progressive Music That Ain't Over The Top Wankery

this list is related to this forum thread, please check
this list is a collaborative one and will surely grow ; it is a proof of concept for a club feature, see here.

Hi people. I'd like to create a list of albums with the purpose of being as complete as possible. I'm looking for music that is technical or progressive, although I really don't like when things get out of hand, with crazy vocals in 4 different registers building tension and brutally stoping to yield it to a shredding solo in mixolydian helped by drums in 11/12 which try to imitate the synth syncopation in counterpoint, for ten seconds before jumping into something else.

1.Angra - Angels Cry
2.Angra - Holy Land
3.Angra - Fireworks
4.Angra - Rebirth
5.Angra - Temple Of Shadows

2020 Picks

2019 was meh for me... Almost absent death metal, only borderline decent oldschool heavy.... A few good surprise along the way though, and mainly female fronted doom/noise/rock bands. But overall 2019 wasn't as generous as 2018. What about 2020 now?

(notice this year's color palette is shaded green and red)

1.Lotus Thief - Oresteia
2.
3.Havnatt - Ragnhildstreet
4.
5.Havukruunu - Uinuos Syömein Sota

2018 Under My Scope

I'm trying to find as many albums as I can this year, and I'm building the list day after day. It should end as a top list, but now it's under construction and I'm just tracking a couple of stuff. I'm not focusing on "good" records, but more on whatever strongly catches my attention.

1.Night Verses - From The Gallery Of Sleep
2.Cauldron - New Gods
3.Imperial Triumphant - Vile Luxury

Ultra Vomit - Objectif: Thunes Translated And Explained

This post aims to spread the humor of Ultra Vomit worldwide. I guess that some people listened to them without understanding a word of French, and ended missing 90% of the band. So that's my attempt at translating this album, I did the best I could, resulting in lots of side notes and awful presentation (still WIP sorry). And maybe some insulting explaination since the jokes are gently stupid.

1.Ultra Vomit - Objectif: Thunes

Master's Hammer: From Best To Worst

The new Master's Hammer is out: Fascinator !

On this occasion I wanted to replunge myself in their discography, and dress a best to worst list just to get my thoughts clear about Master's Hammer, and maybe also guide some new listeners. I'll be semi-reviewing each album chronologically throughout this intro, and the best to worst list comes next.

1.
2.Master's Hammer - Ritual
3.Master's Hammer - The Jilemnice Occultist
4.Master's Hammer - The Mass
5.Master's Hammer - The Ritual Murder

2021 Is Another Journey

I'm not forcefeeding music this year. 2020 had me wasting a lot of time focusing on the lesser releases every week. Nowadays I just listen to what I want, and try to explore new things, dig my backcatalog, and take notes at each significant step. There's unfortunately little metal for now, hopefully it will change.

1.Nina Hagen - live at Fürstenhof Tanzpalast
2.
3.Pat Benatar - Love Is A Battlefield
4.
5.
