Havok redefined my taste in thrash metal. They proved that brilliance in songwriting can compensate for superior -out of this world- technical skills. Burn is a prime example of simple, non-complicated, yet fine-crafted piece of music that goes into thrash metal history, and maybe in the curriculum of "how to play thrash metal" class !

I may have found a favorite New School Thrash band

Let's see how their March release is.

The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

From modern thrash albums I'd this is one of the most enjoyable ones I've heard. Lots of speed, energy and aggression here. The performance of the whole band sounds great here, though if I'm impressed by something that would be the drumming.

I'd say this album would be 9 without the weaker tracks. As it is you've got 5 strong tracks and few of those remaining 7 are a somewhat questionable. Cut this to ~40 minutes and you've got strong thrash album

This is the real issue.

When i first came across Havok's debut, i had a blast going through half of the record and then it started dragging til it finishes to the point where i really thought they would haven't dragged at all.

I felt they lose some good points over length of the record, plus you'd see last couple of tracks are absolute simple and boring. As if they were in hurry to finish it.

For me, TIU is one of the best material Havok recorded and it would be pretty tough to surpass that level.

TIU is clearly better as easily more consistent album, but personally many of my favorite Havok songs are on Burn so it's quite a dilemma. It's a shame that some albums have to be so long and I'd say unnecessarily so because we are dealing with pretty typical thrash that I don't see benefiting anything from that extra 10-15 minutes. So personally I see the albums as equally good, but I'd choose Burn over TIU and US if it was 35-40 minutes and w/o the weakest tracks.

A great, solid thrash debut done with real conviction and prowess. Reminds me at times of early Death Angel, in a good way of course. Best songs for me would be "Identity Theft" and "Category of the Dead".
